Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The record I bring you today is an especially groovy one from the intersection of Fugi<\/strong> (aka Ellington Jordan<\/strong>) and the band known as Black Merda.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fugi and BM collaborated on a number of excellent 45s, the best known being the psychedelic soul classic \u2018Mary Don\u2019t Take Me On No bad Trip\u2019 from 1969.<\/p>\n

Over the course of the next few years, Fugi and Black Merda made a handful of 45s for Cadet and Grand Junction between 1969 and 1971 of which \u2018Red Moon\u2019 was the last.<\/p>\n

\u2018Red Moon\u2019 was written by Black Merda drummer\/singer Tyrone Hite<\/strong> and Grand Junction fixture Marvin Figgins<\/strong> (who also penned Fugi\u2019s 1972 \u2018Sweet Sweet Lady\u2019.<\/p>\n

The song is driven by the rhythm guitar, with funky bass and drums, all pushed along by a great lead vocal by Fugi.<\/p>\n

The overall vibe fall into that bag that Hendrix<\/strong> was stitching together in the years leading up to his death, where soul, funk and rock coexist peaceably, creating a kind of \u201cblack hippie\u201d groove that is very cool indeed.<\/p>\n

\u2018Part 2\u2019 keeps things going with some cool lead guitar laid on top.<\/p>\n

Black Merda recorded two albums, one for Chess and then another for Janus after Tyrone Hite had departed from the band.<\/p>\n

Fugi\u2019s discography is limited to a half dozen excellent 45s, all of which make you wish he\u2019d had the opportunity to do an album.<\/p>\n
