Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Time to get the new week rolling with something fun and funky, as well as a taste of that Hammond juice as well.<\/p>\n

Bull and the Matadors<\/strong> \u2018The Funky Judge\u2019 has been since the dawn of the funk 45 collecting era, one of those basic, DNA-level building blocks of your basic funk crate.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a groovy, funny, and relatively easy to score 45 on one of the great Chicago labels.<\/p>\n

It has enough punch for the dance floor, and enough of that jive to get people singing along.<\/p>\n

\u2018The Funky Judge\u2019 was a pretty sizable hit, making it into the R&B Top 10 in 1968 and the Pop Hot 100 (higher in a bunch of East Coast and Midwest markets), and got new life when it was reissued as part of the Rhino \u2018Beg, Scream and Shout\u2019 boxed set in 1997.<\/p>\n

Bull and the Matadors, James Lafayette \u201cBull\u201d Parks, Milton Hardy, James Otis Love and Robert Holmes<\/strong> hailed from East St Louis, IL and recorded a handful of 45s for Chicago\u2019s Toddlin\u2019 Town label between 1967 and 1969.<\/p>\n

Their only other chart success seems to have been centered around Chicago and St Louis.<\/p>\n

Naturally, \u2018The Funky Judge\u2019 ties into the late 60s \u2018Here Come de Judge\u2019 craze, based in a routine by Pigmeat Markham<\/strong> that was made famous when riffed upon by Sammy Davis, Jr<\/strong> on \u2018Rowan and Martin\u2019\u2019s Laugh-In\u2019, spawning a whole shitstack of records by all kinds of people, as well as countless high school sophomores wandering the halls repeating \u2018Here Come de Judge\u2019 ad nauseum.<\/p>\n

The Bull and the Matadors 45 featured a groovy lead vocal with some nice backing vocals, a funky base coat and a wild bit of feedback at the end.
\nIn an extra added attraction, the flipside (also called \u2018The Funky Judge\u2019) is a groovy Hammond instro (played by I known not whom).<\/p>\n

The other Bull and the Matadors 45s I\u2019ve heard are excellent, though in amuch more conventional (non-novelty) soul vein.<\/p>\n

‘The Funky Judge’ was covered (pretty nicely) a few years later by none other than the J Geils Band.<\/strong><\/p>\n
