We close out Stax Week with a record that I consider to be one of the greatest Southern soul ballads ever recorded, and like Wednesday\u2019s selection, it languishes on the flip side of a monster hit.<\/p>\n

\u2018Knock On Wood\u2019 was Eddie Floyd\u2019s<\/strong> very first hit, making it to Number One on the R&B charts and Top 30 Pop in the summer of 1966. It remains to this day one of the best-known soul records of the 1960s, and has been covered countless times by soul, rock and disco artists in since the time of its release.<\/p>\n

\u2018Got To Make a Comeback\u2019, written by Floyd and DJ Joe Shamwell,<\/strong> is from its very first notes, a truly remarkable record.<\/p>\n

Opening with deep, tremeloed guitar (which keeps rolling through the song, courtesy of co-producer Steve Cropper<\/strong>) \u2018Got To Make a Comeback\u2019 is as deep and pleading a ballad as \u2018Knock On Wood\u2019 was a sock soul shouter.<\/p>\n

Floyd digs deep into the lyric, and the backing \u2013 basically the MGs<\/strong> and the Memphis Horns<\/strong> \u2013 is classic Stax\/Volt.<\/p>\n

Once again, it seems like \u2018Got To Make a Comeback\u2019 was relegated to obscurity by the overwhelming power\/success of it\u2019s a-side. I\u2019m shocked that it hasn\u2019t been covered very mch over the years (though Robert Cray<\/strong> did a very nice, very faithful cover in 1983).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a great, great song\/performance, and a great way to close out a week of Stax.<\/p>\n
