Before we get rolling….<\/p>\n

The Funky16Corners<\/strong> blogging experience has begun\u00a0its transition into the (grandiosely named, but with tongue in cheek<\/em>) Funky16Corners Radio Network!<\/strong><\/p>\n

The changes are as thus – The concentration of the operation will continue its shift to podcasting\/radio, with the Funky16Corners Radio Show<\/strong> originating every week as a live broadcast, Thursday nights at 9PM Eastern on MIXLR,<\/strong><\/a> and will continue to be posted as a downloadable podcast every Friday, and broadcast in the UK on Cruising Radio.<\/p>\n

The Iron Leg Radio Show will also move to a monthly live broadcast (day to be determined) also on MIXLR and will continue to be broadcast on Cruising Radio in the UK.<\/p>\n

Actual written blogging will continue, but will likely be limited\u00a0to one new post a week.<\/p>\n

This year’s Funky16Corners Allnighter\/Pledge Drive<\/strong> will evolve into a Summer of Soul,<\/strong> with a new guest mix posted here (starting at the end of June) once a week, every week for the duration of the summer.<\/p>\n

So dig in, join me on Thursday nights, and keep watching this space for further details.

Today\u2019s selection is something I picked up a couple of years ago after being tipped off to the fact that it shared a backing track with another record already residing in my crates.<\/p>\n

James Duncan<\/strong> recorded a grip of 45s on his own and with the Duncan Trio<\/strong> for the King\/Federal from 1964 on into the eary 70s.<\/p>\n

His earlier stuff is features some amazing, raw vocals in a New Breed R&B style.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s selection \u2018I Got It Made (in the Shade)\u2019 was released in 1970, and sees Mr Duncan inside a much funkier bag.<\/p>\n

The tune opens with some wild, bow-legged, twangy guitar and tight drums, with Duncan singing over the top.<\/p>\n

In and of itself, it is a fine funk 45 indeed.<\/p>\n

That said, a year or two later, Hugh Boynton<\/strong> made his way up to Macon, GA (where the Duncan track has been recorded) and availed himself of the backing track for ‘I Got It Made (In the Shade)’, writing new lyrics and adding a new vocal (and giving himself writing credit) \u00a0rechristening the song as ‘The Funky Grasshopper’.<\/p>\n

Neither record is particularly expensive, both hovering in the 25-30 dollar range. You can dig the Hugh Boynton side on Youtube.<\/a><\/p>\n
