The Pazant Brothers &#8211; Skunk Juice MP3<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The single you see before you today is one of those \u201cHoly shit, look at those titles, how can I not buy this?\u201d 45s.<\/p>\n<p>I knew of the <strong>Pazant Brothers<\/strong> via their sought after work with the <strong>Beaufort Express<\/strong>, but hadn\u2019t heard of either of these cuts (Toe Jam and Skunk Juice, from 1969) before.<\/p>\n<p>At least that\u2019s what I thought, until I gave the 45 a spin and the tune(s) sounded awfully familiar.<\/p>\n<p>It took me a few minutes to arrange\/assess the sounds coming off the record, bt it wasn\u2019t long before I figured out what I was hearing were two \u2018variations\u2019 on <strong>Lionel Hampton\u2019s<\/strong> mighty soul jazz banger, \u2018Greasy Greens\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>I did a little digging and discovered a few things.<\/p>\n<p>First off, \u2018Greasy Greens\u2019 wasn\u2019t written by Hampton, but rather by <strong>Ed Bland<\/strong>, who happened to be the guy credited with both sides of the Pazant Brothers 45.<\/p>\n<p>Second, I dug a bit more and found out that <strong>Eddie Pazant,<\/strong> the woodwind playing brother in the duo had been a member of Hampton\u2019s band when he recorded \u2018Greasy Greens\u2019, both in the studio version on Glad Hamp in 1967 and the live version on the \u2018Newport Uproar\u2019 LP from 1968.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alvin Pazant<\/strong>, the trumpeter had played with\u00a0<strong>Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the OG of \u2018Greasy Greens\u2019 lives up to its title, the reworkings of the song as \u2018Skunk Juice\u2019 and \u2018Toe Jam\u2019 (seriously?) are funkier, slightly shambolic (featuring some wild guitar) and both feature a young sister shouting out the titles over the music.<\/p>\n<p>The Pazant Brothers recorded a handful of 45s for GWP, RCA and Priscilla in the late 60s and early 70s, before waxing their album \u2018Loose and Juicy\u2019 (which featured some of the 45 tracks) for Vanguard in 1975, with production (and five compositions) by Ed Bland.<\/p>\n<p>It is a great, funky 45, and I hope you dig it.<\/p>\n<p>See you all next week.<\/p>\n<p>Also, make sure to follow <strong>Funky16Corners<\/strong> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/funky16corners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Instagram<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Funky16Corners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Twitter<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/61771883720\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep the faith<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong>Larry<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><strong><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/pictures\/new_funky16_logo.jpg\" alt=\"Example\" width=\"179\" height=\"181\" \/><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong> <strong> \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>If you dig what we do here or over at Funky16Corners, please consider clicking on the Patreon link and throwing something into the yearly operating budget!\u00a0Do it and we&#8217;ll send you some groovy Funky16Corners Radio Network (and related) stickers!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.patreon.com\/Funky16corners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/funky16corners.com\/podcasts\/2017_allnighter\/patreon_600.jpg\" alt=\"Example\" width=\"600\" height=\"138\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n_______________________________________________<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Pazant Brothers Listen\/Download &#8211;
