Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The tune I bring you today is one of the great, meat and potatoes funk 45s.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s not a lot of information out there about Sam Moultrie<\/strong> (I couldn\u2019t even locate a picture of him) but what there is seems to indicate that he hailed from (and recorded in) Alabama.<\/p>\n

\u2018Funky Jerk\u2019 was released on the Roulette label in 1969 and aside from a short run in the local Birmingham, AL charts, doesn\u2019t seem to have met with much success.<\/p>\n

This is a shame, because not only is \u2018Funky Jerk\u2019 a stone solid killer, with some gritty soul shouting by Moultrie, hard drums, and pulsing combo organ, but its flipside, \u2018Promised Land\u2019 is a great, mid-tempo number.<\/p>\n

\u2018Funky Jerk\u2019 is one of the best Wilson Pickett<\/strong>-inspired numbers of the era.<\/p>\n

Moultrie would go on to record a few more 45s in the early 70s, as well as producing sides for Terry and the Deep South<\/strong> and Ike Strong<\/strong>, both for the Bama label, but after the mid-70s seems to have disappeared (at least from the music business).<\/p>\n
