Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Spellbinders<\/strong> \u2013 New Jersey\u2019s own \u2013 have been featured in this space before with their epic 1967 floorfiller \u2018Help Me (Get Myself Back Together Again)\u2019.<\/p>\n

The group made a string of outstanding singles for Columbia and Date between 1965 and 1967, all with the involvement of soul genius Van McCoy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018Chain Reaction\u2019 from 1966 is a stellar midtempo number with echoes of the Miracles. As the song builds the group harmonies come in to fatten up the sound, which is \u2013 like many McCoy records \u2013 filled with hooks.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, \u2018Chain Reaction\u2019 got released twice in the UK with a pair of b-sides, first on UK CBS with \u2018For You\u2019 on the flip and then again on Reaction with \u2018Help Me\u2019 on the flip, both in 1966.<\/p>\n

Sadly, for a group with such a great sound and the assistance of Van McCoy, they onky had limited success, with \u2018For You\u2019 grazing the R&B Top 20 in 1965 and \u2018Chain Reaction\u2019, \u2018We\u2019re Acting Like Lovers\u2019 and \u2018Help Me\u2019 scoring regional pop radio success.<\/p>\n

The group broke up in 1967, with female lead Eloise Pennington<\/strong> moving on to join the Ad Libs.<\/strong><\/p>\n
