Greetings all.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The tune I bring you today is from the sole album by Kelly Gordon.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I forget where I first heard about Gordon, but I do remember that it had to do with today\u2019s selection being an interesting, funky track.<\/p>\n

After I grabbed a copy of the album, I dug a little deeper into Gordon\u2019s story and discovered some interesting things.<\/p>\n

First and foremost, Gordon was the composer of one of Frank Sinatra\u2019s<\/strong> biggest hits, \u2018That\u2019s Life\u2019. He was also the producer on Bobbie Gentry\u2019s<\/strong> classic run of mid-60s albums, including the epic \u2018Ode To Billie Joe\u2019 (he appears to have been a staff producer at Capitol records, working the board for a wide variety of artists).<\/p>\n

Though he recorded a few 45s under his own name through the 60s, 1969\u2019s \u2018Defunked\u2019 was his only album.<\/p>\n

Featuring a variety of R&B based styles (leaning in the same direction as Joe South<\/strong> during the same period), the album also includes the first recording of the song \u2018He Ain\u2019t Heavy He\u2019s My Brother\u2019.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s selection is the only instrumental on the album. \u2018If That Don\u2019t Get It, It Ain\u2019t There\u2019 features twangy guitar, funky drums and a chunky electric piano foundation, along with some punchy horns. It\u2019s a great slice of funky rock, and the kind of thing people would be crawling over each other to get had it been issued on 45.<\/p>\n

Sadly, Gordon was stricken with lung cancer and passed away in 1981 at the age of 49.<\/p>\n
