Greetings all.

Here’s a very groovy one for you all.

One of my favorite subgenres is Northern Soul instrumentals, and within that, records that are not in any real way “soul’ records, yet manage to pack enough of a punch to light up a dancefloor (which in the world of Northern Soul are legion).

Steve Karmen was a very successful advertising/jingle composer in the 60s and 70s, as well as having a sideline recording his own pop records from he 50s on.

In 1968, he composed a jingle for Pontiac Motors called ‘Breakaway’.

Jimmy Radcliffe recorded a wild, freeform vocal over the big, brassy tune, and that single, released on United Artists in 1968 (with the instrumental dub credited to the ‘Steve Karmen Big Band’) became a huge fave on Northern Soul dance floors.

It’s not hard to see why. The tune has a big, bold sound with lots of dramatic brass stabs, drums and Radcliffe’s feverish vocal really takes off.

So, going back a few years, I’m wandering around on Ebay, and what do I see but a promotional record with eight different versions (some very short) of the ‘Breakaway Theme’ on the Pontiac label with writing credit to Steve Karmen.

If memory serves it was a very inexpensive ‘buy it now’, so I figured I’d give it a try.

A week or so later the record slipped through the mail slot and under the needle and it was indeed the same ‘Breakaway’.

The information on the label seems to suggest that the different length/style versions of the theme were meant to be played in the background while the DJ/announcer read advertising copy over it.

All in all, a very groovy artifact, especially since it includes the full (actually a few second longer than the UA release) version of the ‘Breakaway’ instrumental.

Aki Aleong

I hope the new week finds you well.

Today’s selection is one of only a handful of 45s issued by the Los Angeles-based Trans-American label (well known amongst funk collectors for the Village Crusaders ‘Akiwawa’ 45).

Sam and the Soul Walkers only released this one 45 in 1969. They were led by Samuel McWhorter aka Sam Russell who recorded several sides for the Playboy label in the 1970s.

Interestingly, ‘Soul Walk’ is co-written (and produced) by singer/actor Aki Aleong, who had a varied and interesting career in Hollywood, including scoring a hit with the 1961 record ‘Tradewinds Tradewinds’.

‘Soul Walk’ is a hard-hitting funk number with solid drums and organ, and cool rhythm guitar buried in the mix.

The song (and its flipside ‘A Telephone Is Ringing’) were rerecorded by a group called the Turnarounds and released on TRC the same year (I can vouch for the fact that the versions of ‘Soul Walk’ are definitely different recordings).

Noble ‘Thin Man’ Watts

Greetings all.

I hope the new week finds you well.

I picked up the record you see before you a few years ago on the strength of a friend’s recommendation.

I was familiar with the name Noble Watts (usually billed as Noble ‘Thin Man’ Watts) but didn’t really know anything about him.

Watts was an R&B saxophonist who released a string of 45s starting in the late 1950s, later moving on into a more jazz style for a series of albums in the 70s and 80s.

Today’s selection, ‘F.L.A.’ was released in 1968.

The record opens with a guitar riff lifted from Wilson Pickett’s ‘Funky Broadway’ and then manages to squeeze in quotes/references to Aretha Franklin’s ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ and Petula Clark’s ‘Downtown’ woven into a fast-moving, funky (mostly) instrumental.

The flip side, ‘Thingamajig’ is a slower, funky instro with some cool percolating guitar running underneath the sax soloing as well as a brief drum break.

Greetings all.

The tune I bring you today is one of the great, meat and potatoes funk 45s.

There’s not a lot of information out there about Sam Moultrie (I couldn’t even locate a picture of him) but what there is seems to indicate that he hailed from (and recorded in) Alabama.

‘Funky Jerk’ was released on the Roulette label in 1969 and aside from a short run in the local Birmingham, AL charts, doesn’t seem to have met with much success.

This is a shame, because not only is ‘Funky Jerk’ a stone solid killer, with some gritty soul shouting by Moultrie, hard drums, and pulsing combo organ, but its flipside, ‘Promised Land’ is a great, mid-tempo number.

‘Funky Jerk’ is one of the best Wilson Pickett-inspired numbers of the era.

Moultrie would go on to record a few more 45s in the early 70s, as well as producing sides for Terry and the Deep South and Ike Strong, both for the Bama label, but after the mid-70s seems to have disappeared (at least from the music business).

Flow (Don Felder, right)

Greetings all.

The tune I bring you today may be the very first time anything remotely Eagles-related appeared here at Funky16Corners.

Flow, like Hack Bartholomew, was one of the very few, non-jazz artists to have a record released by the storied CTI label.

The band, including a young Don Felder – several years before he wrote ‘Hotel California’ – who had been playing in the Florida garage band scene alongside Bernie Leadon (another future Eagle) and Tom Petty among others.

The Flow album was released in 1970, as was the single of ‘Line’em’, which oddly enough only seems to have been issued in Spain.

The song is a cover of a Leadbelly tune, which was originally a work song/chant used by gandy dancers laying down railroad tracks. The group even drops in a section of another Leadbelly number – ‘Black Betty’ – which would become famous years later in a version by Ram Jam, and is a funky number, with organ, a wailing lead guitar, congas and a beefy rhythm guitar line and a great percussion breakdown in the middle of the song.

I haven’t heard the rest of the album, so I can’t say with any certainty whether ‘Line’em’ is an anomaly.

I can’t say for sure, but I suspect that the lack of success for Flow convinced Creed Taylor to stay out of the rock business.

It’s a cool one, and I hope you dig it.

The Funky16Corners 2018 Allnighter/Pledge Drive aka The Summer of Soul 2 is back!

Thanks to my work/blogging/broadcasting-addled mind, I concluded the 2018 Summer of Soul without posting a return visit from my man Chris Lujan, of the mighty M-Tet and the Dirty Dirty podcast.

Chris’s contributions to the mix series are always groovy and unique in that they weave in contemporary releases as opposed to focusing exclusively on older stuff.

To begin, some words from Chris:

I’m always a little bit hesitant posting a mix for Larry’s “All-Nighter Pledge Drive” with so many new releases in it. I figure that everyone is buying up these records and that I’ll be duplicating songs from the other contributor’s mixes. But, there’s so much great music coming out these days, I feel compelled to do so. Plus, running my own label (Lugnut Brand Records) in such great company as Funk Night, Colemine, Transistor Sound, Sunflower Soul, F Spot… I feel compelled to share the great stuff that my contemporaries are dishing out.

Larry has been a wealth of great music and information. So, I’m always pleased to deliver a mix (of course, with a healthy dose of shameless self promotion). Oh, and Larry wrote the liner notes for The M-Tet’s LP. There’s some more shameless self promotion for you.

 

So, thank you Chris, and once again my apologies for keeping this most excellent mix from you all.

Perez Prado

You find music in the strangest places.

A few years back someone posted a psychotronic video, with a clip of a dancer from some old black and white grindhouse flick, but the music playing over the clip was wild.

It took some finagling, but after asking around and doing a little digging I discovered that the track was toady’s selection, ‘Mama A Go Go’ by Perez Prado.

Prado was a Cuban/Mexican bandleader, known as the King of the Mambo who had hits in the 50s with the original ‘Mambo No 5′, Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White’ and ‘Patricia’.

Originally released in 1967 on the United Artists LP ‘Concierto Para Bongo’, ‘Mama A Go Go’ is a crazy fusion of Latin boogaloo and 60s au go go.
The mixture of styles is unusual, but I’m a little shocked it wasn’t more prevalent. The collision of the two styles seems like a natural fit to me, with the hard percussion and the wailing combo organ.

The album as a whole is a very interesting mix of styles, with a few tracks (‘Estoy’ and ‘A Go Go’) following the pattern of ‘Mama A Go Go’, ‘Cayitano’ moving in a straighter boogaloo direction and ‘Fantasia’ and the title track going straight up Latin jazz.

The album must have been popular in some markets, as it was released in a number of countries in 1967, then reissued in Spain and the US in the 70s (this is a 1979 Raiz issue) then again in a few countries in the 80s, then on CD a number of times in the following decades.

There was also a 45 issue of this track and as far as I can tell it’s rarer and more expensive than the LP.

Johnny Maestro (bottom center) with the Crests

Greetings all.

The F16C Summer of Soul has come to a close – thanks to all who donated – , and we return to business as usual here ye olde blogge-space.

What better way to get restarted than with a certified mind-blower.

If you grew up in the New York area listening to oldies radio (especially WCBS-FM) the name Johnny Maestro should be a very familiar one. He was one of the most prominent surviving pioneers of the doowop era – the Crests ’16 Candles’ is one of the best remembered records of that era – and he would go on to sing lead for the Brooklyn Bridge, who had a huge hit in 1968 with ‘The Worst That Could Happen’.

However, sandwiched in between those two landmarks is one of the most (for me, anyway) surprising records.

In 1966, Maestro and the Crests recorded what would be the first-release US version (in August of 1966) of J.J. Jackson’s ‘Come See Me’, which would be released a few months earlier (April 1966) in the UK by the Pretty Things (Jackson’s version wouldn’t come out in the US until 1968).

As much as I love the Pretty Things version, the take by Maestro and the Crests is an absolute killer.

Arranged by JJ Jackson, this version opens with a one-two punch of bass and drums and takes off like a shot. There’s a great vocal by Maestro and the band, with some groovy rhythm guitar and organ just flies along.

I love to pull this record out and play it at soul nights because it combines a familiar song, in an unfamiliar version with a monster arrangement. It never fails to turn heads.

Sadly, it went nowhere at the time of its release, charting (and just barely) at one Albany, NY radio station.

The flip side, ‘I Care About You’ is a brilliant blue-eyed soul ballad with a remarkable performance by Maestro.

These days the 45 is quite expensive, so if you see it, grab it.

Greetings all.

The Funky16Corners 2018 Allnighter/Pledge Drive aka The Summer of Soul 2 has begun!

We continue this year’s Summer of Soul mix series with a new mix from my man Vincent the Soul Chef of Fufu Stew.

A few words from the DJ:

Here we are again, and my ninth appearance for this most tremendous cause… I owe Larry more debts of gratitude than I can hold in my hands; the Fufu Radio adventure that I’ve been on for the past year… words can’t describe how proud I am to have that space, and that I can share that space with anyone and everyone. I’ll just call this mix “Pick a Hit… From the Hat”, because the 45s I present here were definitely picked at random, and pieced together in just such a way that it makes sense. To borrow from my man Mass, any sound can make music, and all words make sense. Enjoy the ride.

We will continue with a new mix every week for the duration of the summer, with a selection of stellar contributions from some of my (and your) favorite selectors including DJ Prestige, Ben Gibson, DJ Prime Mundo, DJ RP of Funkdefy, Vincent the Soul Chef, Chris Lujan of the M-Tet, DJ Bluewater, HeavySoulBrutha Dave B. and new contributor, DJ Scott Boyko and Soultaker73.
