The end of the week is nigh so it’s time to remind you about the Funky16Corners Radio Show, which takes to the airwaves of the interwebs this and every Friday night at 9PM on Viva Radio. You can also subscribe to the show as a podcast in iTunes or grab an MP3 from the archive here at the blog.

The last instro of the week is a testament to the truism that sometimes you just never know what’ll turn up in your crates.

I was digging around for Christmas material late last year when I flipped over ‘Santa Claus Go Straight to the Ghetto’* (never having done so before) wondering if the b-side was also a holiday track.

What I found was not more jingling bells, but in fact another of that rare species, the James Brown organ instrumental.

Many times over the years have I waxed wistfully about my love for the Godfather’s repeated dalliance with that giant mound of wood and wires known as the Hammond organ.

James was not a superior technician, but he did bring a certain joie de vivre to his playing which – though it occasionally descended into flights of fancy that sounded as though he had eschewed his hands for his elbows – were often quite cool.

This track, ‘You Know It’ is an especially groovy surprise since it is both funky, and has a cool arrangement, with the strings and the horns and what not.

This is proof that no matter how much you think you know, the James Brown discography is filled with all kinds of blind alleys, dark corners and cul de sacs.

The middle of the week is here, and so is our second groovy instro.

This is another one of those 45s that I happened upon when perusing a friend’s sale list.

Never heard if it before, but as soon as I played the clip, knew I wanted a copy.

The tune – ‘Loosen Up’ – is a titular, if not sonic response to Archie Bell and the Drells and the sounds within are every interesting indeed.

A close look at the label and a little digging provide some perspective as to why.

The first thing I noticed – after listening, of course – was the name ‘Curtis Ousley’ on the label. This was of course, the mighty King Curtis, whose publishing company Kilynn is given production credit. King Curtis co-wrote ‘Loosen Up’ and gets full credit for the flipside ‘Summer Dreams’.

The artist, Rubin Mitchell was an Albany, NY-area based lounge pianist who was described in a local paper at the time as having a repertoire that included “funky jazz, showcase numbers like ‘Sabre Dance’ and straight classical’. Once you give ‘Loosen Up’ a listen you begin to realize how telling that description is.

Mitchell – who recorded at least one private issue LP and two more for Capitol (I think this is a non-LP 45) sounds like a guy in the vein of Liberace, who made putting on a show of skill a crucial part of his act, with lots of speed and flourish.

That’s what you get here, sprinkled in liberally atop a soulful sounding rhythm section (dig that drum break at the beginning!) that may or may not include some Kingpins.

It’s not the kind of thing I’d spin for dancers, but it certainly is interesting to slip into your ears.

The flipside is a much mellower, bluesier number that sounds (unsurprisingly) like a cousin of ‘Soul Serenade’.

From what I’ve been able to discover about the rest of his catalog, my suspicion is that this single is a stylistic outlier.

I’m not sure what happened to Rubin Mitchell after his tenure with Capitol, but my suspicion is that it included a hotel lounge or two.

X-Citers Unlimited – Soul To Billie Joe

Welcome to the week, this one devoted, in a completely arbitrary manner, to instrumentals.

I just happened to be wading through the digimatization/storage folders deciding what to post, and one instrumental led to another and before you know it – Bob’s yer uncle – here we are.

We begin the week with a record that fits the very definition of ‘un-Google-able’.

First and foremost, the band in question, the X-Citers Unlimited, had a name that invites all manners of misspelling and misplaced punctuation (a hyphen…really?).

Second, and this is the real killer, both sides of the disc are covers of other people’s material, meaning that you have no “in-band” songwriting credits to expand a search.

Third, it would appear that this is the only record ever released by this band, making it impossible to triangulate using other 45s.

The only available clues come courtesy of the fact that the X-Citers Unlimited recorded for a well-known label – which makes it possible to date the record to 1967 – and that it was produced by a guy that should be familiar to fans of 60s soul, Mr Wally Roker.

Using that date and name, and combining it with previous knowledge of Mr Roker’s working environment during that time, I’d be willing to venture a guess that this was a West Coast band.

And that – as they say – is that.

Dead Endsville.

That said, one can always take solace in the quality of the music in the grooves, which in this case is fine indeed.

The reworking of Bobbie Gentry’s ‘Ode To Billie Joe’ (presented here as ‘Soul To Billie Joe’) is a hard charging bit of funky soul with some tasty Latin percussion and plenty of brass.

It’s groovy because unlike the vast majority of the probably hundreds of cover versions of the tune, it does not hew to the original tempo.

The flip, a cover of ‘Hang On Sloopy’ is much more explicity boogaloo-ish.

It is a very cool 45 indeed, and I hope that you dig it (and that, if you know anything else about it, you’ll drop me a line).

Welcome to the middle of another spectacularly crisp, post-Thanksgiving, pre-Yule day.

The tune I bring you today is a little something I grabbed on a recent dig, and on object lesson in how sometimes you really don’t need to hear a record to know it’s going to be good.

Any beat fiend worth their wax is already hip to the sounds of the Incredible Bongo Band, especially their version of Jerry Lordan’s oft-recorded ‘Apache’, one of the ur documents of hip hop.

The IBB’s first LP ‘Bongo Rock’ is fairly rare and sought after, mainly for ‘Apache’.

However, there is much to dig on ‘Bongo Rock’, up to and including the album’s opening track (and one of its singles), which you see before you presently, ‘Let There Be Drums’.

Like many of the tunes on ‘Bongo Rock’, ‘Let There Be Drums’ is a cover, in this case of Sandy Nelson’s 1961 hit.

Written by Nelson and producer/writer/guitarist Richie Podolor, ‘Let There Be Drums’ was, like so much of Nelson’s catalog, a percussion feature meant to highlight his skill on the skins.

Since the IBB was a similar showcase (created by producer Michael Viner), this time for drummer Jim Gordon and percussionist King Errison, the recordings were aimed in the same general direction.

‘Let There Be Drums’ may lack the crisp breakbeats of ‘Apache’ there are still plenty of slamming drums (do you ever really ever get sick of walls of well recorded drums?) and some cool guitar.

As far as I can tell ‘Let There Be Drums’ was only sampled in 2007 by Buck 65 on the track ‘Dang’.

Welcome to another fine week here at the Funky16Corners.

The tune I bring you today is one of those records that I knew of, but hadn’t heard until very recently, when it turned up in a friend’s sale list.

If any part of the name Papa Don Association rings a bell, it might be because the man behind the record is in fact famed southern soul producer/songwriter Papa Don Schroeder.

Known to soul fans for his work with artists like James and Bobby Purify and Mighty Sam (and his familiar PDP logo on their 45s) Schroeder was a significant presence on the southern scene during the 1960s.

Released in 1968, the sole 45 by The Papa Don Association featured the song you see before you today – ‘Souled Out’ (credited to Schroeder) – and a reworking of Procol Harum’s ‘Whiter Shade of Pale’ on the flipside.

‘Souled Out’ is a certifiably mighty piece of funky southern soul.

The opening bass (some goddamn funky bass!) and drum combo out to be in some kind of hall of fame, and the rest of the song has a muscular, Booker T and the MG’s edge to it.

If you get the chance, slap on the headphones and turn up the volume and really listen to the drum sound. The back and forth between the snare roll and the bass drum (which almost echoes) is really something else.

I have had no luck in discovering who the ‘Papa Don Association’ actually was, but my suspicion leans in the direction of the American Studios crew in Memphis, with whom Schroeder worked extensively during the period. There’s a similarity here to Rosie Grier’s ‘Slow Drag’ that pushes me in that direction as well.

This is one you want to slap on in the heat of a particularly sweaty dance if only to kick things up just a little bit more. The pulse of ‘Souled Out’ conjures up the image of any number of fine frames being shaken and stirred vigorously.

This is a heater indeed, and I hope you dig it as much as I do.

I hope that all is well in your corner of the world and that you’re all ready to hit the ground running this week.

The mighty Billy Preston has appeared in this space a few times before, including earlier this year with his Hammond instrumental ‘Greazee Pts 1&2’.

The track Ibring you today has dropped here as part of mix, but I only managed to score a copy of the 45 a few weeks back.

When I posted a list of my finds from the Allentown all-45 show, a friend requested that I post ‘Billy’s Bag’, so here it is.

Released in 1965 on the VeeJay label, ‘Billy’s Bag’ didn’t hit the charts in the US or the UK (where it was released on Sue) but it was a seminal record on the Mod Soul scene in the UK.

‘Mod Soul’ may be – from the outside – an amorphous concept, but I wouldn’t by lying if I said it was the driving force behind my listening for a long time.

As an collective genre,it encompassed soul jazz, R&B, uptempo blues, soul (of all varieties), and especially Hammond groovers (which fall inside all of the previously mentioned subgenres).

The sound was a huge part of the Mod lifestyle, as well as going on to inform much of the finest music to come out of the UK in the mid-60s.

Thanks to my own exposure to the Mod aesthetic – of which I was mostly an observer – Mod soul had a huge influence on the way I dig music, and I enjoy nothing better that spinning records for a crowd that shares that appreciation.

Preston spent the mid-60s as part of Ray Charles’s roadshow, and the flipsides of both of his VeeJay 45s were instrumental versions of Charles tunes (Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying and Drown In My Own Tears).

Without a doubt my all-time favorite cut by Preston, ‘Billy’s Bag’ is fast enough for the dance floor and has more than enough Hammond organ heat for the organ groove fan in me. The conga/cowbell percussion breaks are especially cool.

I really dig how Preston works the piano in the background as well.

‘Billy’s Bag’ made its mark on the Northern scene as well.

Greetings all and welcome to the middle of another week here at the Corners du Funk.

We here on the coast are in the middle of a ass-kicker of a storm, and while that’s probablyscary enough for most (myself included) Halloween is at hand, and so it behooved me to whip something a little scary onto the blog.

Now – unless you find the combination of thick glasses and groovy vibes frightening…someone probably doesCal Tjader, though scary talented, was not known for inducing fear in his listeners.

However, he did find the time to record and extra smooth and tasty version of that old Hallows Eve perennial, ‘Spooky’.

Originally recorded by Mike Sharpe, and then the Classics IV – who had a huge hit with it in 1968 – ‘Spooky’ is one of those great “fits nicely in Halloween” tunes that doesn’t involve screaming, Frankenstein grunts or any other novelty hoo-hah.

Mr. Tjader recorded the tune on his ‘Cal Tjader Plugs In: Live at the Lighthouse’ LP in 1969, with a great band that included Armando Peraza on percussion and Al Zulaica on electric piano (who adds a lot of flavor to the track).

The band gets a nice groove going here, and Tjaders is – as always – in top form.

His Skye stuff isn’t easy to find, but always worth it when you can.

The middle of the week is upon us, and I have something funky for your ears.

About a year ago, I embarked on one of my rare daylight digging excursions, with one of the little Corners in tow.

Now, these trips are a delicate matter, in that time must be used judiciously, with full attention paid to the fact that the child accompanying me has no interest whatsoever in Daddy’s vinyl obsession and as a result has little tolerance for what sane people often refer to as “standing around waiting”.

Fortunately for all parties, the stock in this particular digging spot was recently replenished, packed with goodness and as a result I was able to gather my rosebuds in short order, hand over my dough and exit the establishment before my son’s patience reached its expiration date.

That said, I exited the store with an armload of groovy soul jazz and one soundtrack in particular that I had been after for quite a while (which coincidentally, you see before you today), that being Johnny Pate’s music for the film ‘Shaft In Africa’.

Johnny Pate is one of those guys that had at least three or four careers while other folks were just getting off the starting line.

He got his start as a jazz bassist in Chicago in the 40s, and had a hit with the Johnny Pate Quintet with a version of the oft-recorded ‘Swinging Shepherd Blues’ in 1958.

By the early 60s he had gone to work for Chicago soul labels like Okeh and ABC/Paramount as an arranger and A&R man (working with groups like the Marvelows and the Impressions), eventually moving on to Curtom Records by the end of the decade.

Pate wrote and arranged the soundtrack for ‘Shaft In Africa’ in 1973.

Though there are many cool tracks on the album (including the vocal theme by the Four Tops) , the standout is the track you see before you today, ‘Shaft In Africa (Addis)’.

Opening with a very tasty drum and percussion break, the tune opens up into a horn-led groover. There’s some great electric piano soloing through the song, as well as the (excellently heavy) drums returning to the fore a number of times.

Oddly, my copy of the album cuts out for a short time in one of the channels at the very beginning (I have no idea why), but it is a minor inconvenience.

Tim Whitsett and the Imperials – Monkey Man

Greetings all, and welcome to another fine week here in the hothouse.

The record I bring you today fell into my ears quite providentially, via the sales list of an old friend who also happens to be one of the premiere mod DJs here on the East Coast.

I gave the link a click, and as soon as I heard the sounds attached therein, I sent out an urgent missive and made it the latest addition to my crates, organ 45 subdivision.

Now, when I picked up ‘Monkey Man’ by Tim Whitsett and the Imperials, my initial thoughts were something along the lines of “here’s another groovy, yet painfully obscure disc, and my seemingly endless thirst for information will never be satisfied.

Little did I know… (“dot dot dotsaid aloud for full effect).

So, I set to Googling and was immediately shocked to discover that Tim Whitsett was not merely some talented footnote who stumbled into a recording studio but once and then  back out again into a thick cloud of obscurity.

Fact is, Tim Whitsett and his band the Imperials (later known as the Imperial Show Band) criss-crossed the American south through the 1960s, eventually adding singer Tommy Tate as vocalist and sometime drummer (see pic above).

They recorded the very groovy ‘Monkey Man’ in 1962 (no doubt inspired by my baby pictures…) for Johnny Vincent’s Ace label.

The tune is yet another in a long line of excellent ‘Watermelon Man’-ish discs sailing all through the ether back in the day. The Imperials manage to add their own flavor to the mix with the horns (that’d be Tim) and organ (Tim’s brother Carson) and some wicked chicken-scratch guitar.

The stories of Whitsett and his band are long and very interesting, and instead of retyping the facts, I’ll just send you to their Wiki’s via the links (Tim, the band) so that you can dip into both. Suffice to say, both stories, especially Whitsett’s are very interesting.

While doing so, let ‘Monkey Man’ roll around in your head on repeat play. You’ll thank me later.

Greetings all.

Welcome to another week here at Funky16Corners.

What you see before you is the result of one of my musical obsessions, taken to the nth degree.

Longtime readers of Funky16Corners will already be hip to the fact that I am a huge fan of the Soulful Strings.

I consider Richard Evans to be a genius, and the work he did for the Cadet label, with the Soulful Strings and otherwise made for some of the finest music of the 1960s.

It was a while back, while prepping a blog post about a JJ Barnes 45, that I discovered, quite by accident that two of his sides had been redone (using the same raw tracks) as string instrumentals on a Solid Hit 45, billed as the Lebaron Strings (after label honcho Lebaron Taylor).

This got me thinking about other “strings” instrumentals, and so the search began.

I dug back into my own crates, and started to look elsewhere and was surprised by much of what I found.

The “soulful string” instrumentals can be divided into pre-and-post Soulful Strings.

The first wave, starting with the San Remo Golden Strings made its way onto vinyl in 1965.

The first of these tracks, ‘Hungry For Love’ got its start as an uncredited instrumental on the flipside of Barbara Mercer’s 1965 Golden World 45 ‘The Things We Do Together’.

Reportedly, when the instrumental started to get some airplay, Ed Wingate, using the name of an Italian town that he and his wife had been to on vacation, paired the tune with ‘All Turned On’ (featuring pianist Bob Wilson) and the San Remo Golden Strings were born.

The “group” was in fact various and sundry moonlighting Funk Brothers, backed by string players from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, led by violinist/concertmaster Gordon Staples.

‘Hungry For Love’ was a minor hit, as was its follow-up ‘I’m Satisfied’. Another San Remo cut, ‘Festival Time’ buoyed by the Northern Soul scene, became a UK Top 40 hit in 1971.

The UK soul scene is an important link, especially in regard to the early string-laden instrumentals.

‘Exus Trek’ by the Luther Ingram Orchestra was released in 1966. It was an instrumental dub of that single’s A-side ‘If It’s All the Same To You’. Both sides of the 45 became popular spins in the UK.

The same can be said of 1966s ‘Crying Over You’. An instrumental version of Duke Browner’s vocal of the same name got its own 45 release, three catalog numbers before Browner’s version (both writing and production are credited to Browner. As with the Ingram 45, both sides became popular spins on Northern dance floors.

I haven’t been able to track down much in the way of info on Robert Walker and the Soul Strings. The involvement of producer/arranger Ernie Wilkins suggests to me that it was a Detroit record. The side presented here, ‘Stick To Me’ is classic Northern Soul and is one of the rarer 45s in this mix. The flipside ‘The Blizzard’ is a great, uptempo dance craze vocal.

‘Now She’s Gone’ by the aforementioned Lebaron Strings was released in 1967, pre-dating the vocal version of the tune by JJ Barnes by a year.

As I mentioned earlier, these tracks can largely be divided into pre-and-post Soulful Strings eras.

Though Detroit producers and musicians were ladling strings over all kinds of records (the classy sound of strings an important component of what would become known/collected as Northern Soul) Richard Evans work with the Soulful Strings was the first purpose-built example of the sound.

It was in Evans hands that the string aspect of the music became more than an embellishment. He integrated the sound of the string section with the more innovative aspects of the Cadet Records sound. That he had access to the finest musicians in Chicago had a lot to do with the artistic success of the records.

Their first album ‘Paint It Black’ was released in 1966, but it wasn’t until ‘Burning Spear’ charted, making it into the R&B Top 40 in early 1968 as well as having regional success on Chicago radio that the group had some success.

Not only was ‘Burning Spear’ covered many times, but the group must have been selling LPs, since Cadet released no less than seven albums, including a live set and a Christmas record.

Evans was no less than a visionary, taking what could have been a simple, easy listening concept and doing something entirely unexpected with it.

The first two Soulful Strings tracks included in this mix are the classic ‘Burning Spear’ from the 1967 LP “Groovin’ With the Soulful Strings’ and ‘Soul Message’ from 1968’s ‘Another Exposure’. Both are fantastic examples of the broad palette that Evans was working with.

The remainder of the tracks in the mix seem to have been following the lead of Evans and the Soulful Strings to varying degrees.

‘Soul Strings and a Funky Horn’, released in 1968 seems a direct attempt to capitalize on the sound of the Soulful Strings. Produced by Sonny Lester for his Solid State label, the record bears no other credits whatsoever (aside from songwriting).

The LP was a mixture of covers of obvious hits and more obscure numbers.

The two tracks included here, a cover of the Smokey Robinson and the Miracles ‘Yester Love’ and Aretha Franklin’s ‘Think’ may not be nearly as adventurous as the Soulful Strings, but the band and the arrangements are tight.

The Soft Summer Soul Strings are another mystery. Though the catalog number of the 45 seems to indicate a 1969 vintage, the music on the 45 points to a somewhat earlier time.

The first tune included here, ‘I’m Doing My Thing’ is a fairly obvious lift of the Supremes’ ‘Where Did Our Love Go’ and the flip (with which we close the mix) ‘Theme For Soul Strings’ applies the same MO to King Curtis’ ‘Soul Serenade’ (both 1964 records). I haven’t been able to make any connections using the info on the labels, so if anyone knows where this one is from, please drop me a line.

The next two cuts hail from what in my opinion is the finest of all the Soulful Strings albums, 1969’s ‘String Fever’. The first of the group’s albums to be composed almost entirely of original material and featuring some of the grooviest sounds of their catalog, ‘String Fever’ is also one of the hardest Soulful Strings albums to come by.

‘Chocolate Candy’ and ‘Zambezi’ are both funky, forward thinking and leave the listener wondering why the Soulful Strings weren’t much more successful.

The next cut is an aberration of sorts, since it comes not from the world of soul, but out of Exotica. ‘A Taste of Soul’ was released a few different times, credited to Les Baxter, Les Baxter and 101 Strings and just 101 Strings.

One of the more prolific exploit-Exotica outfits, 101 Strings created albums aimed squarely at squares, especially those with ‘hi fi’ systems.

The California-based Alshire label was home to all manner of cash-in records aimed at the rock, pop, country and easy listening markets. There were dozens of albums issued under the 101 Strings name, including classical, ethnic, exotica and pop efforts.

This material, once recorded was often issued and reissued with different covers, in different collections, getting the maximum mileage out of the product.

‘A Taste of Soul’ is itself an anomaly in the Alshire catalog. Though the cut opens with waves of strings that sound like they were lifted from a contemporary movie soundtrack, once the drums come in (and they come in heavy) you begin to realize that you’re hearing something unusual.

Where Cadet may have been casting an eye at the easy/hi-fi crowd with the Soulful Strings albums, leaving them in the hands of Richard Evans and the Cadet house band took them in another direction entirely.

101 Strings, emanating from the 99 cent bins in supermarkets, gas stations and occasionally record stores had no overt musical agenda beyond basic competence, but like any broken clock that reads the correct time twice a day, they struck gold with ‘A Taste of Soul’ (which even had a 45 release under Baxter’s name).

Gordon Staples and his compadres from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra were fixtures on all manner of Detroit soul records, for Motown as well as various and sundry smaller labels. It was in 1970 that Staples and the Funk Brothers (once again, anonymously) were paired yet again as ‘Gordon Staples and the String Thing’ (aka the Motown Strings).

Of all the tracks in this mix, Gordon Staples and the String Thing meet the Soulful Strings on their own turf and come away looking (and sounding) quite good.

The 1970 LP ‘Strung Out’ features a couple of well-chosen covers, as well as a grip of excellent originals penned by Motown arranger Paul Riser. Riser, who won a Grammy with Norman Whitfield for the instrumental b-side of ‘Papa Was a Rolling Stone’ wrote some stellar material for the String Thing/Motown Strings.

The first cut here ‘Strung Out’ – which also saw release as a 45 – is sought out by crate diggers and is a great showcase for the Funk Brothers (dig that James Jamerson bass line).

‘Get Down’, which is a little less laid back features some excellent guitar work.

Many of the tracks from the ‘Strung Out’ album were recycled a few years later on the soundtrack to the Fred Williamson Blaxploitation flick ‘Mean Johnny Barrows’.

The last track in this mix – the only one presented out of chronological order – is the Soft Summer Soul Strings ‘Theme For Soul Strings’. As I mentioned before, it sounds as if it was written as a ‘tribute’ to King Curtis’ 1964 ‘Soul Serenade’. It’s slow, mellow, and is a great way to close out the mix.

I hope you dig this look into an often forgotten chapter of the ‘soul story’.

As mentioned here in recent weeks, I have been stockpiling blog posts (and episodes of the radio show) so as to keep things as seamless as possible during the period my wife is undergoing treatment.

I’ve managed – thanks in large part to scrambling wildly and using every available sliver of available time (kind of like the pink slime of blogging) – to stay a few weeks ahead of the game.

Thanks to this, and an unexpected full day at home, I was able to sit down and put together a mix I’d been ruminating on for some time.

It was one of those – ‘I’m rolling a few songs with a similar feel around in my fevered brain’ – things that I eventually brought to fruition in mix form.

I also tried something different, by giving the mix a preliminary airing on Soundcloud several weeks ahead of its publication here (albeit at a lower bitrate).

What you have here is a fine example of one of my favorite kinds of mixes, that being a slightly downtempo, late night vibe, replete with a soupcon of funky beats, sampleable loops and the kind of goodness that makes your ears feel warm and happy when ensconced in headphones (or ensconcing earbuds, however you choose to roll).

There are a couple of tracks here that have either been featured individually on the blog, appeared in a differently framed mix, or in a live set here or there.

There are also more than a few very groovy tracks making their Funky16Corners debut.

That all said, I think that if you cue this one up, mix yourself a potent beverage and turn down the lights, you will be satisfied (at least musically).
