Greetings all

Starting this week, and for the foreseeable future I will be taking a hiatus from the traditional blog posts here at Funky16Corners and over at Iron Leg, focusing instead on the radio broadcasts and live mixes (Funky16Corners Radio Show here and Iron Leg Radio Show and Testify! over at Iron Leg).

The weekly work of assembling, broadcasting and archiving two (sometimes three) radio shows a week has gradually muscled out the traditional posts that I have been doing at Funky16Corners for the last 15 years and at Iron Leg since 2007.

I have loved the research/learning that went along with writing those posts, but the current schedule leaves little time for them.

When I started these blogs I scarcely imagined that the time would come when I’d be producing several hours of live radio a week, but that’s what happened, and while I’ll miss doing the old posts, I love doing the radio shows.

All of the existing archives will remain, and hopefully I’ll be able to work some writing back into the schedule along the way.

So dig it, make sure to tune in, and I’ll see you all next week.

Greetings all.

The Funky16Corners 2019 Allnighter/Pledge Drive is here!

Things are looking (much) different this year.

This is the 10th year of doing a pledge drive here at Funky16Corners, and the landscape, and (forgive the use of the word) ‘mission’ of Funky16Corners has evolved fairly drastically since the blog opened it’s doors nearly 15 years ago (not counting the webzine years).

The world of music blogging is not what it once was. The way people access music and information on the web is a whole different thing than it was when I started. Traffic is a small fraction of what it once was.

The main thrust of what I do here at Funky16Corners has also changed significantly.

Starting with single-song blog posts in the early days, moving on to DJ mixes, then the beginning of the Funky16Corners Radio Show (which is nearing the 500 episode mark!), then the various and sundry guest mixes, in and outside of the pledge drive context.

I have to begin by sending out my thanks to all of the amazing DJs that have been generous with their time and their records over the years, all of whom I am proud to have featured at Funky16Corners.

The last few years have seen my move into live radio broadcasts, with Funky16Corners Radio Show and Testify!, my show for WFMU’s Give the Drummer Radio appearing weekly, and the Iron Leg Radio Show (nearing 100 episodes) monthly.

As a result of the workload associated with this change, the frequency of blog posts has decreased to once a week.

This year I decided that I needed to take a break from the Allnighter/Summer of Soul format, if only to ease off of the workload associated with putting it all together (and maybe spend a little more time with the fam while they’re home for the summer).

In it’s place I have created two brand new, hour-long mixes.

The first, Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache is an hour of dancefloor soul, with a grip of new and recent arrivals in the Funky16Corners crates.

The second. Loose and Groovy is a collection of instrumentals, many of them funky, packed with breaks and loopable grooves for days.

The focus on using Patreon to raise money to pay the bills around here (paying for server space/bandwidth and broadcast fees) has proven to make a lot of sense, moreso than the previously used Paypal model.

Kip Anderson

Greetings all.

The first time I heard today’s selection I was pretty much knocked on my ass.

Though I was familiar with the Rockpile version of ‘A Knife and a Fork’ from the 1980 ‘Seconds of Pleasure’ album, I had no idea that the song was a cover.

Kip Anderson was one of those singers that hovered on the border between soul and blues for his entire career. He was born in South Carolina in 1942, recording his first 45 for Veejay in 1959.

He recorded ‘A Knife and a Fork’ in 1966 in Muscle Shoals.

The song – with it’s dark, humorous bent – has a rock solid beat, with guitar, bass, drums and combo organ pushing things along at a brisk pace with a sax solo coming.

Like Tommy Tucker’s ‘Long Tall Shorty’, it seems to almost plod at the beginning, but picks up steam almost imperceptibly until its ready for the dance floor.

Anderson would continue to record for a variety of labels before a heroin dependency led to a 10 year stint in prison.

After he got out of jail he recorded both gospel and soul, recording for the Ichiban label in the 90s.

He eventually passed away in 2007.

Louisiana Red

Greetings all.

Today’s selection is a small slice of the discography of the great Louisiana Red.

Born Iverson Minter in 1932, Louisiana Red recorded for a variety of labels (under his own name) from the early 60s on.

His 45 discography is relatively brief, dwarfed by his LP catalog which stretches from 1963 to his death in 2012.

His style mixed traditional acoustic blues, electric blues and R&B, the latter of which is in evidence on 1964’s ‘Sugar Hips’.

Ironically, ‘Sugar Hips’ was the b-side of his biggest commercial success, ‘I’m Too Poor To Die’ which grazed the Billboard Hot 100 and made the Cashbox Top 30.

‘Sugar Hips’ is the kind of fast moving, gritty R&B that the Mods in the UK were crowding dance floors for.

It has a persistent guitar/bass/drums kick, but it’s the wailing harmonica that really starts a grease fire. Red’s vocal interjections sound like Slim Harpo and Howling Wolf got trapped in the same echo chamber.

‘Sugar Hips’ was recorded in New York for Henry Glover, who along with sleazy, mob-connected Roulette Records honcho Morris Levy tacked his name onto the writing credits with Red.

It’s a very groovy side indeed, and I hope you all dig it.

What you see before you is a special, all-new (all New Orleans!) mix for Mardi Gras 2018.

Funky16Corners Boogaloo Mardi Gras, first posted in 2012 has rerun in this space every year since then.

As I have procured lots of excellent New Orleans vinyl in the interim, I thought that it behooved me to dig back into the crates and whip something new on y’all.

F16C: Keep the Fire Burning is just a hair over an hour of high quality New Orleans soul 45s, all of which are suitable for rug-cutting, second lining and however you are moved when the music comes on.

Allen Toussaint and Eddie Bo are both heavily represented as songwriters, producers, arrangers and in Eddie’s case, performer, and there are lots of other Crescent City masters (and mistresses) getting down in the grooves.

So pull down the ones and zeroes, get out your um-ba-rella and Mardi Gras!

Greetings all.

If you already know the name of Billy Lee Riley, you very well might be surprised to see him here at Funky16Corners.

Along with his band the Little Green Men he waxed some smoking rockabilly sides for Sun Records in the mid-50s, including ‘Red Hot’ (later covered by Robert Gordon) and ‘Flying Saucers Rock and Roll’.

However, as the years went on, Mr Riley found his way to the R&B side of the street (though there is a case to be made that having worked in rockabilly he was already half the way there).

In 1962 he was the man behind the Megatons’ ‘Shimmy Shimmy Walk’, and as the decade moved on he recorded a wide variety of material, including a fair amount of soul covers.

Today’s selections hail from a 1967 45 for the Mojo label (Riley bounced around to Mercury, GNP Crescendo, Atlantic, HIP and then back to Sun by the end of the 60s) where he did a number of 45s and a couple of albums, including 1968’s hard to find ‘Southern Soul’.

Riley’s covers of Wilson Pickett and Bobbie Gentry are pure Memphis, with a tight, hard-hitting band and great vocals. There’s plenty of hot guitar (naturally) and some nice piano and backing vocals as well.

‘Mississippi Delta’ is especially groovy. Originally the flipside to Bobbie Gentry’s epic ‘Ode To Billie Joe’, it was – in its original version – smoking hot. Riley turns up the soulful heat just a little bit more and the horn chart and drums are excellent.

Riley’s 45s from this period aren’t too hard to find, but the albums might force you to pry open your wallet a little bit further.

Big Maybelle

Greetings all.

Today’s selection is a 45 that I chased after for years, only finally scoring a decent copy last year.

Big Maybelle was a star of the early years of R&B, having been recording since 1947 and having a string of hits in the early to mid 1950s.

By the time she recorded Question Mark and the Mysterians ’96 Tears’ in 1966, she was in her 40s and her career was all but over.

Her version of ’96 Tears’ takes the original and gives it a big, soulful punch, with a great repeated horn line and a confident, powerful vocal.

The cut is available on 45, but was also on her 1966 LP (with one of the weirdest cover drawings of all time) for Rojac, ‘Got a Brand New Bag’, which I’d love to find as it includes covers of tunes by the Troggs, Donovan, the Beatles, Los Bravos and Dr. West’s Medicine Show And Junk Band’s ‘The Eggplant That Ate Chicago’ (written by a young Norman ‘Spirit In the Sky’ Greenbaum).

That said, this is a dance floor burner, and I hope you dig it.

Greetings all.

Welcome to Part Eleven of the Funky16Corners 2017 Allnighter/Pledge Drive aka The Summer of Soul!

This week we have the traditional closing mix of the festivities from your’s truly.

I got things started this year with a selection of Northern Soul, and I’m closing things out with a mix of dance floor movers, party starters, soul jazz and Hammond groovers.

The fundraising aspect of the 2017 Summer of Soul hasn’t been all that encouraging.

Whether it was the change in format, the switch to Patreon, or just a general lack of interest, I can’t really say, but if you were waiting for an appropriate time to toss something into the mix, now would be it.

So dig the sounds, and make sure to click on the Patreon button to help keep the lights on here at Funky16Corners! Fundraising up to this point has not been very encouraging, so please do what you can. It is as always greatly appreciated.

The fundraiser will also take a slightly different form this year, moving to Patreon (click here or on the logo below to go to the Funky16Corners page) , where you will be able to spread your contributions out over the entire year (i.e. if you pledge 12 bucks, it doles it out a dollar a month over the course of a year), which will help cover the ongoing server/broadcast/hardware expenses. This year has seen the upgrade of a couple of crucial pieces of equipment, and any help you fine people can provide will keep the machinery moving here at Funky16Corners central.

So please dig deep so we can continue to do the same!

In addition to all the broadcasts and the blogging all of the Funky16Corners and Iron Leg mix archives will continue.

As I have mentioned recently, the changes to the general format here are as thus – The concentration of the operation will continue its shift to podcasting/radio, with the Funky16Corners Radio Show originating every week as a live broadcast, Thursday nights at 9PM Eastern on MIXLR, and will continue to be posted as a downloadable podcast every Friday, and broadcast in the UK on Cruising Radio.

The Iron Leg Radio Show will also move to a monthly live broadcast (day to be determined) also on MIXLR and will continue to be broadcast on Cruising Radio in the UK.

Don’t forget, my weekly radio show for WFMU’s Give the Drummer Radio, Testify! is on the air live, every Wednesday night from 10-12. If you dig Funky16Corners and/or Iron Leg I think you’ll dig it. So tune in when you get a chance!

Greetings all.

Before we get started this week I have some important news.

Starting this Wednesday, 5/17 from 10PM to 12, and every Wednesday going forward at that time I will be doing a new weekly show on the WFMU Give the Drummer Radio stream called Testify! This show (which had a couple of dry runs elsewhere, earlier on) will see yours truly in a more free-form bag, taking the worlds of Funky16Corners and Iron Leg and mashing them together, with soul, rock, funk, pop, garage, psyche, R&B, Now Sound, jazz and anything else I think sounds good. The show will originate live from the Funky16Corners Subterranean Blogcasting Nerve Center and Record Vault, and will be archived thereafter.

So if your ears are free Wednesday night, turn them toward WFMU.org, click on the Give The Drummer stream and dig what it is that I am putting down.

The tracks I bring you today are yet another small, but groovy chapter in the very interesting career of Ed Townsend.

Townsend got his start as a hit singer in his own right, with ‘For Your Love’ in 1958, went on to write songs for Theola Kilgore (For the Love of My Man), later co-wrote ‘Let’s Get It On’ with Marvin Gaye, and in between was part of Perry and the Harmonics, and the group I bring you today, Dennis and the Supertones.

The group recorded only one 45 – ‘Superman Lover’ b/w ‘Doin’ the Superman’ – in 1963, and that, as they say, was that.

Both tunes (which are separated by a hair’s breadth of originality) lean heavily in the direction of the mighty Rivingtons (the “ZOOM ZOOM ZOOMS” are right out of he Papa Oom Mow Mow playbook) and are a very cool slice of R&B-going into-soul.

Interestingly enough, ‘Superman Lover’ was covered later that same year by a group called Andy and the Marglows (brothers Andy, Jimmy and Terry Huff) on Liberty.

It’s the kind of party-starting stuff that I dig the most, and I hope you dig it, too.
