Listen/Download – Noble Watts – F.L.A. MP3

Greetings all.

I hope the new week finds you well.

I picked up the record you see before you a few years ago on the strength of a friend’s recommendation.

I was familiar with the name Noble Watts (usually billed as Noble ‘Thin Man’ Watts) but didn’t really know anything about him.

Watts was an R&B saxophonist who released a string of 45s starting in the late 1950s, later moving on into a more jazz style for a series of albums in the 70s and 80s.

Today’s selection, ‘F.L.A.’ was released in 1968.

The record opens with a guitar riff lifted from Wilson Pickett’s ‘Funky Broadway’ and then manages to squeeze in quotes/references to Aretha Franklin’s ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ and Petula Clark’s ‘Downtown’ woven into a fast-moving, funky (mostly) instrumental.

The flip side, ‘Thingamajig’ is a slower, funky instro with some cool percolating guitar running underneath the sax soloing as well as a brief drum break.

I hope you dig it and I’ll see you all bext week.

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Keep the faith

Sam Moultrie – Funky Jerk

Example

Listen/Download – Sam Moultrie – Funky Jerk MP3

Greetings all.

The tune I bring you today is one of the great, meat and potatoes funk 45s.

There’s not a lot of information out there about Sam Moultrie (I couldn’t even locate a picture of him) but what there is seems to indicate that he hailed from (and recorded in) Alabama.

‘Funky Jerk’ was released on the Roulette label in 1969 and aside from a short run in the local Birmingham, AL charts, doesn’t seem to have met with much success.

This is a shame, because not only is ‘Funky Jerk’ a stone solid killer, with some gritty soul shouting by Moultrie, hard drums, and pulsing combo organ, but its flipside, ‘Promised Land’ is a great, mid-tempo number.

‘Funky Jerk’ is one of the best Wilson Pickett-inspired numbers of the era.

Moultrie would go on to record a few more 45s in the early 70s, as well as producing sides for Terry and the Deep South and Ike Strong, both for the Bama label, but after the mid-70s seems to have disappeared (at least from the music business).

I hope you dig the tune, and I’ll see you all next week.

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Keep the faith

Flow – Line’em

Flow (Don Felder, right)

Example

Listen/Download – Flow – Line’em MP3

Greetings all.

The tune I bring you today may be the very first time anything remotely Eagles-related appeared here at Funky16Corners.

Flow, like Hack Bartholomew, was one of the very few, non-jazz artists to have a record released by the storied CTI label.

The band, including a young Don Felder – several years before he wrote ‘Hotel California’ – who had been playing in the Florida garage band scene alongside Bernie Leadon (another future Eagle) and Tom Petty among others.

The Flow album was released in 1970, as was the single of ‘Line’em’, which oddly enough only seems to have been issued in Spain.

The song is a cover of a Leadbelly tune, which was originally a work song/chant used by gandy dancers laying down railroad tracks. The group even drops in a section of another Leadbelly number – ‘Black Betty’ – which would become famous years later in a version by Ram Jam, and is a funky number, with organ, a wailing lead guitar, congas and a beefy rhythm guitar line and a great percussion breakdown in the middle of the song.

I haven’t heard the rest of the album, so I can’t say with any certainty whether ‘Line’em’ is an anomaly.

I can’t say for sure, but I suspect that the lack of success for Flow convinced Creed Taylor to stay out of the rock business.

It’s a cool one, and I hope you dig it.

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Lloyd Price Orchestra – It’s Your Thing

Example

With Lloyd on the Label There’s Soul on the Table!

Example

Listen/Download – Lloyd Price Orchestra – It’s Your Thing MP3

Greetings all.

Here’s a crazy one.

Lloyd Price was of course a New Orleans R&B/soul star from 1952 when he hit with ‘Lawdy Miss Clawdy’ on into the mid-1970s (though he has continued to perform into his 80s).

Over the course of his career Price has released albums and 45s by his band, including the great ‘This is My Band’ in 1963 (featuring James Booker on organ) and a number of 45s, including today’s selection.

Price ran the Lloyd Price’s Turntable label for a few years at the end of the 1960s, releasing records by himself, the Coasters, Howard Tate and the Lloyd Price Orchestra.

What makes today’s selection unusual, is that the label says that it was recorded in Jamaica!

The record was arranged by Curley Palmer, who had played guitar with the Coasters and the production is credited to Price and Arthur Jenkins (who produced the Coasters 1969 Turntable 45).

I hve not been able to find any information that indicates how Price and his band ended up in Jamaica, or if it was really his band and not a bunch of Jamaican session musicians.

The version of the Isley Brothers ‘It’s Your Thing’ runs at a leisurely yet funky pace, with some groovy electric piano, percussion and horns.

If anyone can fill in the blanks on this one I would be much obliged.

Until next week.

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Fred Wesley – Still On the Loose

Fred Wesley

Example

Listen/Download – Fred Wesley – Still On the Loose MP3

Greetings all.

The 45 you see before you today was a very pleasant surprise when I picked it up some years ago.

Fred Wesley was of course familiar to me (and should be to you) as the trombonist/bandleader with the JBs as well as the Funkadelic-adjacent Horny Horns.

‘Still On the Loose’, released in 1980, was from the period after Fred’s George Clinton years, when Wesley was attempting to establish himself as a bandleader under his own name.

He recorded the ‘House Party’ album for Curtom, which was at the time being distributed by RSO Records.

‘Still On the Loose’ is a mellow, yet still funky, era-specific sound with echoes of the P-Funk, with traces of disco on the edges.

Fred not only plays much ‘bone (apologies to JB) but also takes lead vocal duties (as well as producing).

The result is a dance-floor friendly number with a sing along chorus.

The ‘House Party’ album made it into the R&B Top 40, but according to Wesley’s autobiography ‘Hit Me Fred’ RSO dropped Curtom from distribution as the record was gaining steam and killed its momentum.

It’s a groovy one, and I hope you dig it.

See you all next week.

The Vibrations – Love In Them There Hills

Example

The Vibrations

Example

Listen/Download – The Vibrations – Love In Them There Hills MP3

Greetings all.

Today’s selection is yet another chapter in the musical pipeline between Philadelphia and Chicago.

The mighty Vibrations recorded a string of Lps and 45s first for Checker, and then for Okeh between 1960 and 1968, before moving on to the Philly-based Neptune an North Bay labels in the 70s.

Group member Carl Fisher had contributed songwriting to a number of Philly records under his own name and the pseudonym ‘Del Shahr’ during the 60s, and today’s selection, ‘Love In Them There Hills’ was penned by Philly giants Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff (with help from Roland Chambers) and was released in 1968.

The song was covered a year later by Maxine Brown on Epic and then in 1974 by the Pointer Sisters on ABC/Blue Thumb.

The Vibrations version starts off with a Latin flair, before the drums and voices drop in with the funk. The production by Gamble and Huff is tight.

‘Love In Them There Hills’ was the Vibrations last hit, making nto the R&B Top 40 and the Pop Hot 100.

I hope you dig the track, and I’ll see you all next week.

Greetings all.

A few weeks back I was invited to bring my record box up to my man Scott Boyko’s Northern Soul night at (dig this) Northern Soul kitchen and bar in Hoboken, NJ.

I recorded almost the whole night, and what you see before you are two sets by Scott, one long set by me, and a shorter set at the end of the night where Scott and I go one-for-one trading off.

There is a grip of good music to be heard, so pull down the ones and zeroes and get hip.

See you next week.

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Listen/Download – F16C for This Is Funkaholic! – Give Everybody Some 67MB/Mixed MP3

Greetings all.

This is a re-post of a mix I did for the This Is Funkaholic! Radio Show back in 2015.

‘Give Everybody Some’ is a half hour of tasty, mostly instrumental funk (you can listen to the entire show here) . There are a couple of old faves, some things that have appeared here recently, and some groovy new stuff that’ll make it here in the future.

I thought it’d be cool to post it here for those of you that weren’t able to catch it when it aired.
Until next week

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Keep the faith

Larry
