Greetings all.

The Funky16Corners 2019 Allnighter/Pledge Drive continues!

In continuance of shaking things up a little, I’m going to be presenting compilations of the guest mixes that my favorite selectors have brought to the Pledge Drive/Allnighter over the years.

This week we have six blazing mixes from the man behind Fufu Radio and Fufu Stew, the mighty Vincent the Soul Chef!

Vincent is a key part of the Funky16Corners Radio family and it is always a pleasure to hear whatever he’s been mixing up in the kitchen!

__________________________________________________________________

A Note on the 2019 Pledge Drive

The focus on using Patreon to raise money to pay the bills around here (paying for server space/bandwidth and broadcast fees) has proven to make a lot of sense, moreso than the previously used Paypal model.

If you dig any of the stuff I do here, any of the radio shows, or the mix archives, or even if you’re one of the few that still read the blog posts, please consider signing up for Patreon and making a small, recurring, monthly donation of a few dollars.

You can click on the link below.

It’s pretty simple, very safe and a great way to keep Funky16Corners up and running for another year.

So thanks in advance, and enjoy the tunes!

Keep the Faith

Larry

_____________________________________________________________

The pledging will continue this year with Patreon (click here or on the logo below to go to the Funky16Corners page) , where you will be able to spread your contributions out over the entire year, which will help cover the ongoing server/broadcast/hardware expenses. This year has seen the move to 100 percent live broadcasting (Mixlr.com/Funky16corners)  and continued hardware and software upgrades at Funky16Corners central, to keep the radio/podcasting experience as seamless and groovy as possible. So please dig deep so we can continue to do the same, and if you’re already a Patreon donor, please accept my heartfelt thanks!

Example

I am also including a Paypal donation button (below) if you’d rather donate in a lump sum instead of the rolling donation in Patreon.

Greetings all.

A few weeks back I was invited to bring my record box up to my man Scott Boyko’s Northern Soul night at (dig this) Northern Soul kitchen and bar in Hoboken, NJ.

I recorded almost the whole night, and what you see before you are two sets by Scott, one long set by me, and a shorter set at the end of the night where Scott and I go one-for-one trading off.

There is a grip of good music to be heard, so pull down the ones and zeroes and get hip.

See you next week.

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Keep the faith

Listen/Download – So Much Soul F16C Live at Reggae Got Soul 1/21/18 MP3

Greetings all.

What you see before you is a live set that I recorded a few weeks back at Reggae Got Soul, a very groovy recurring night at the Asbury Park Cigar and Tobacco Co in (you guessed it) Asbury Park, NJ.

The night is run by my man Jay Boxcar, who you may remember as a charter member of the Asbury Park 45 Sessions crew.

I hadn’t been out DJing live in a long, long time, so the opportunity to do so, especially in a chill setting right around the corner (OK, not literally, but less than 30 minutes away) was irresistible.

Since it had been so long, I decided to whip together a box full of Northern Soul faves. Nothing beats hearing some of these records played on a nice, loud sound system.

The evening started with Jay whipping a little reggae and ska on the room, after which I hit the decks, and then DJ Scott Boyko opened up his 45 box and closed things out in style.

I’ll be returning to RGS on February 10th with a box full of New Orleans funk and soul to help celebrate Mardi Gras, so if you’re in the area, tip on in.

See you next week

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Keep the faith

Greetings all.

I have a special treat for you all today!

My man Tarik Thornton – frequent guest mix/Allnighter flyer – has returned to the ones and twos and whipped up a very tasty new mix indeed, entitled ‘To Russia With Love’.

It gets its Bond-ish title as it was originally prepared for the Grooves collective in Russia (see the accompanying interview here).

What you get here is a great selection of upbeat, classic-era soul 45s from one of the genre’s preeminent collectors and spinners. I’ve already added a couple of the selections to my want list, so you get that endorsement as well!

It’s always a gas when I get to pass along one of Tarik’s mixes to y’all, so dig in, dig it, and I’ll see you all on Friday.

Keep the faith

Larry

Listen/Download – Crossing the Pond: An Hour of Transatlantic Hammond Heavies! MP3

Greetings all.

The end of the week is upon us, which mean that it’s Funky16Corners Radio Show time! Join me this and every Friday night at 9PM on Viva Radio for the best in funk, soul, jazz and rare groove – all on original vinyl! If you can’t be there at airtime you can always subscribe to the show as a podcast in iTunes, listen on your mobile device via the TuneIn app, or grab yourself an MP3 here at the blog.

Frequent fliers here at Funky16Corners know that I have a Hammond organ jones, and it has been quite a while since it has evidenced itself – in mix form, anyway – here on the blog.

So, I sat down, dug through the crates and whipped together a delicious meringue of Hammond (and other) organ sides for your delectation entitled ‘Crossing the Pond: An Hour of Transatlantic Hammond Heavies!“.

The catch -as they say – is that the music in question is split right down the middle, with about half of it originating overseas. Most of the foreign stuff is from the UK, but you also get groovers from Holland, Sweden, Belgium and right over our Northern border in Canada.

There are a couple of old faves, some folks that have appeared here at the blog in single posts, and a couple of very cool records/performers that have never appeared here in any form.

You get an hour of the good stuff to keep your ears (and hopefully your feet) busy, so dig in and I’ll see you all on Monday.

Keep the faith

Larry

Greetings all.

Time to close out the week.

First, a reminder that you should open your ears and fill them with the latest broadcast of the Funky16Corners Radio Show, appearing this and every Friday night at 9PM on Viva Radio. Should you be unable to dig at airtime, you can always subscribe to the show as a podcast in iTunes, listen on your mobile device through the TuneIn app, or download an MP3 here at the blog.

Today, I’m digging back into the archives to bring you a favorite live set of mine, recorded back in 2011 at Botanica in NYC.

This is a hard charging set of soul and funky soul burners meant for you to get your groove on to, so let the ones and zeros fly, roll back the carpet, loosen your  wig, kick off your high heel sneakers and dance.

I’ll see y’all on Monday.

Keep the faith

Larry

Once again, I’d like to thank all the selectors for their mixes, and all of you readers/listeners for coming by to check it out, and helping to keep Funky16Corners up and running!

Greetings all

Welcome to the 2014 edition of the Funky16Corners Allnighter/Pledge Drive.

This is the ninth annual Pledge Drive, and the fifth Allnighter.

If you haven’t experienced the Allnighter/Pledge Drive, it can be explained as thus: once a year, the Funky16Corners Blog, your home for the best in funk, soul, jazz and rare groove vinyl for almost 10 years comes to you with hand outstretched, asking for donations to offset the operating expenses of the web site.

The Funky16Corners ‘operation’ (as it is) included the Funky16Corners and Iron Leg blogs, the mix archives for both (containing well over 200 mixes), and the Funky16Corners Radio Show/Podcast (another 200+ files available for download, or through subscription in iTunes).

The money raised during the pledge drive goes to pay for the server space and fees associated with hosting the whole megillah.

As has been attested to many times in the past, Funky16Corners has humble beginnings, starting out on the old (free) Blogger service, moving to WordPress, and then to self-hosted WordPress. The move to paid hosting was necessitated by increased bandwidth usage, as well as the need for a place to store all the mixes (and eventually the radio show episodes).

The Allnighter/Pledge Drive is a once-yearly occurrence, in which yours truly, and some of the finest selectors out there whip up new mixes for your delectation.

In past years, I have posted all of the mixes in a single post, and left it up for a week.

This year, the quality and quantity of the mixes spurred me on to try something a little different, i.e. posting a new mix each weekday for a period of just over two weeks. This way, each selector gets their moment in the spotlight, and the mixes get spaced out so that the listeners don’t suffer from mix-fatigue.

Each day, you’ll get a fantastic mix (there really are some amazing ones this year) from one of my favorite DJs, many of whom have participated in the Allnighter before, as well as a couple of great new contributors.

So, if you dig what we do here at Funky16Corners, click on the Paypal link and toss some cash into the barrel.

Contributors will receive a 2014 Allnighter badge, as well as some stickers from the archive (as long as they last).

Example

This year I will also be drawing the names of contributors at random for groovy swag, including CDs and 45s from Cultures of Soul, and CDs from Light in the Attic and Secret Stash.

So, dig the sounds for the next couple of weeks, and make sure you stop back on a daily basis to pick up new mixes and contribute for a chance to win some cool stuff.

Thanks, and as always,

Keep the faith

Larry

A note from Vincent:

It’s such a thrill every time I get to send some soulful vibes your way. Here’s a nice little timeline full of inspirational goodies from my newly remastered rips. Inspirational in that since I joined the social media bandwagon last week, Ive been floored by the outpouring of support from old friends and long time heroes. The tracks containd in this mix represent some of that recent inspiration, especially after listening to some episodes of F16C Radio and Gail Smith’s most amazing Work Your Soul series, just to name a few… Thanks to all of those who saw fit to friend a struggling cratedigger. You can visit me at mixcloud.com/fufustew fufustew.wordpress.com or facebook.com/vincent.soulchef

Listen/Download Funky16Corners Presents: Vincent the Soul Chef – Life Is More Like a Box of Records!

NOTE: Today’s mix comes to us courtesy of my man Vincent the Soul Chef of the long-running Fufu Stew blog.

I got to know Vincent back in the day when he guested at the Asbury Park 45 Sessions, and his always excellent mixes have appeared in this space a few times over the years.

Like all the other selectors in this year’s line-up, Vincent has both taste and deep crates, the perfect combination when mixing soul.

Make sure to check out Fufu Stew when you get a chance.

See you tomorrow, for a spectacular Jamaican mix by DJ Bluewater!

A Word from DJ RP

FUNKDEFY, located in Columbus Ohio, is the longest running Funk-N-Soul dance party of Central Ohio. Founded in 2004, the Crew is an ensemble group of crate diggers and beat battlers. Not only have they been throwing monthly all vinyl dance parties, but in years past introduced live Soul to Columbus, heating up the city with their combination of dance parties on wax mixed with some incredible live bands, including The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker, The Budos Band and Eli “Paperboy” Reed & The True Loves. The following contribution was put together by founder DJ RP for your audio pleasure. You can hear other mixes of theirs on Soundcloud and see updates about them on Facebook. The crew hopes you will become part of, and a friend of, the funky collective.

HUGE thanks to Larry for allowing me to participate. Funky16Corners was so influential in me starting to search out old records. I can’t thank Larry enough for all he does for the record digging community. Show your support for probably the best music treasure in the world and donate to keep Funky16Corners the gem that it truly is! Peace and SOUL… HSB

NOTE: Greetings all.
Today I have the pleasure of bringing you a mix from a new contributor to the Allnighter (but an old friend), HeavySoulBrutha Dave B from the ‘Put the Needle On the Record’ blog.
Dave is another guy with deep crates and exceptional taste in music, which is reflected in the high quality of the mix he has contributed.
It is a distinct pleasure to add him to the line up.
Dig it, and I’ll see you tomorrow!
Larry

Anyone that donates today to the Allnighter/Pledge Drive will (in addition to getting the badge and stickers) be entered into a random drawing for a copy of the new Cultures of Soul comp, ‘Andy Smith’s Jam Up Twist USA featuring Deano Sounds’. This is a very groovy collection of wild R&B and soul put together by one of the UK’s premier selectors.
There will be more drawings over the next week for CDs by Fantastic Voyage, Light In the Attic and 45s from Cultures of Soul!

Larry
