Greetings all

Starting this week, and for the foreseeable future I will be taking a hiatus from the traditional blog posts here at Funky16Corners and over at Iron Leg, focusing instead on the radio broadcasts and live mixes (Funky16Corners Radio Show here and Iron Leg Radio Show and Testify! over at Iron Leg).

The weekly work of assembling, broadcasting and archiving two (sometimes three) radio shows a week has gradually muscled out the traditional posts that I have been doing at Funky16Corners for the last 15 years and at Iron Leg since 2007.

I have loved the research/learning that went along with writing those posts, but the current schedule leaves little time for them.

When I started these blogs I scarcely imagined that the time would come when I’d be producing several hours of live radio a week, but that’s what happened, and while I’ll miss doing the old posts, I love doing the radio shows.

All of the existing archives will remain, and hopefully I’ll be able to work some writing back into the schedule along the way.

So dig it, make sure to tune in, and I’ll see you all next week.

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Keep the faith

Larry

Dig it and I will see you all next week.

Keep the Faith

Mr Finewine cues up another killer!

This past Wednesday I had the privilege of joining Matt ‘Mr Finewine’ Weingarden at his regular weekly shindig at Botanica in New York City.

Thanks to a variety of difficulties – most of which have been covered in this space – I haven’t been able to get out and spin soul 45s for more than two years, and I was eager to get back on the decks.

It turned out to be a very groovy affair indeed, with some heavy record people – including Connie T. Empress of the Empire State Soul Club (and Asbury Park 45 Sessions) and my man Keenan Popwell falling by to soak up the sounds.

Example
Connie T. Empress and Keenan Popwell rap about wax.

I also got to meet some new folks (Monk One was in the house), and sample a couple of glasses of sparkling ginger beer (I had to drive back to NJ…).

The only bummer was, once we got ready to toss some platters on the decks, my trusty digital recorder decided not to cooperate, and would not fire up, preventing me from recording my set live.

Example
Somebody’s got a frowny face… (I’m probably thinking about the drive home).

Not one to let a little technology rain on my parade, I sat down this morning (after not quite enough sleep) and typed up my set list, then moved over to my turntables and mixer to recreate my set.

I was on the decks for about an hour and twenty minutes, and then Matt and I closed out the night by trading off, 45 for 45. Though I did not recreate that part of the evening, I listed the 45s I played above.

Mr Finewine was an exceptionally gracious host, and I really had a gas. Hopefully I’ll be getting back into the city to spin some more in the coming year. I will of course keep you apprised of any upcoming dates.

I hope you dig the sounds, and I’ll see you all on Monday.

Now I’m gonna take me a nap…

Keep the faith

Larry

Greetings all.

A few weeks back I was invited to bring my record box up to my man Scott Boyko’s Northern Soul night at (dig this) Northern Soul kitchen and bar in Hoboken, NJ.

I recorded almost the whole night, and what you see before you are two sets by Scott, one long set by me, and a shorter set at the end of the night where Scott and I go one-for-one trading off.

There is a grip of good music to be heard, so pull down the ones and zeroes and get hip.

See you next week.

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Listen/Download – So Much Soul F16C Live at Reggae Got Soul 1/21/18 MP3

Greetings all.

What you see before you is a live set that I recorded a few weeks back at Reggae Got Soul, a very groovy recurring night at the Asbury Park Cigar and Tobacco Co in (you guessed it) Asbury Park, NJ.

The night is run by my man Jay Boxcar, who you may remember as a charter member of the Asbury Park 45 Sessions crew.

I hadn’t been out DJing live in a long, long time, so the opportunity to do so, especially in a chill setting right around the corner (OK, not literally, but less than 30 minutes away) was irresistible.

Since it had been so long, I decided to whip together a box full of Northern Soul faves. Nothing beats hearing some of these records played on a nice, loud sound system.

The evening started with Jay whipping a little reggae and ska on the room, after which I hit the decks, and then DJ Scott Boyko opened up his 45 box and closed things out in style.

I’ll be returning to RGS on February 10th with a box full of New Orleans funk and soul to help celebrate Mardi Gras, so if you’re in the area, tip on in.

See you next week

Greetings all.

Welcome to Part Five of the Funky16Corners 2017 Allnighter/Pledge Drive aka The Summer of Soul!

Example

This week we have a great selection from the dynamic duo of Brian ‘Preacher Man’ Hannan and DJ Trueskillz of Funkdefy in Columbus, Ohio.

Preacher Man and Trueskillz have been holding it down in Columbus for 13 years, and do their Funkdefy night the last Saturday of every month at Bossy Girl’s Pin Up Joint, where this set was recorded live on May 27, 2017.

What you get here is a very tight set mixing old and new sounds together to keep the dance floor hopping all night long.

So dig the sounds, and make sure to click on the Patreon button to help keep the lights on here at Funky16Corners!

________________________

We will continue with a new mix every week for the duration of the summer, with a selection of stellar contributions from some of my (and your) favorite selectors including  Tarik Thornton, Ben Gibson, Chris Lujan of the M-Tet, DJ Bluewater and HeavySoulBrutha Dave B.

The fundraiser will also take a slightly different form this year, moving to Patreon (click here or on the logo below to go to the Funky16Corners page) , where you will be able to spread your contributions out over the entire year (i.e. if you pledge 12 bucks, it doles it out a dollar a month over the course of a year), which will help cover the ongoing server/broadcast/hardware expenses. This year has seen the upgrade of a couple of crucial pieces of equipment, and any help you fine people can provide will keep the machinery moving here at Funky16Corners central.

So please dig deep so we can continue to do the same!

Example

In addition to all the broadcasts and the blogging all of the Funky16Corners and Iron Leg mix archives will continue.

As I have mentioned recently, the changes to the general format here are as thus – The concentration of the operation will continue its shift to podcasting/radio, with the Funky16Corners Radio Show originating every week as a live broadcast, Thursday nights at 9PM Eastern on MIXLR, and will continue to be posted as a downloadable podcast every Friday, and broadcast in the UK on Cruising Radio.

The Iron Leg Radio Show will also move to a monthly live broadcast (day to be determined) also on MIXLR and will continue to be broadcast on Cruising Radio in the UK.

Don’t forget, my weekly radio show for WFMU’s Give the Drummer Radio, Testify! is on the air live, every Wednesday night from 10-12. If you dig Funky16Corners and/or Iron Leg I think you’ll dig it. So tune in when you get a chance!

Greetings all.

Welcome to Part Two of the Funky16Corners 2017 Allnighter/Pledge Drive aka The Summer of Soul!

Example

This week we have a spectacular reggae mix from my man DJ Prestige of Fleamarket Funk.

First, a few words from Pres:

“Any time I get a chance to contribute to the Funky 16 Corners empire it’s a pleasure.  Larry has been an early supporter of me at Flea Market Funk (10 years strong!), record dealer, and most importantly a good friend and confidant.  He’s turned me to to so many good records, sold me good records, and was an integral part of the Asbury Park 45 Sessions crew way back when.  The world we be a much sadder place without the massive contributions he has made with this site, as well as his podcast, radio show, other blogs, live DJ sets and everything else he has put his blood, sweat and tears into.  I know the feeling, the hustle is real (remember that, you will be seeing more on that from me shortly), and with this mix I’ve done for the 2017 pledge drive, I decided to go back to the essence of Jamaica and do an all forty five reggae mix.  Not only did I pick some classic and newer original reggae forty fives, I tried to do my best (without the toasting, although you have no idea how bad I wanted to yell “With a flick of my wrist I make you jump and twist!”) to put a set full of dub echo, delay, reverb and a lot of one turntable needle dropping as a tribute to the sound systems, selectors, and dee jays who kept the beat going and people dancing all night long in JA and the UK.  Reggae music has massively influenced me, and every day I am learning more and more and trying to get as many good reggae when they turn up.  I hope you enjoy listening to  this mix as much as I did creating it.  #DigDeeper people, there is so much beneath the surface, and Larry has showed the world how deep and how good music can be.  One love and maximum respect to the man they call Funky 16 Corners!”

Mix created with two Technics 1200 turntables, a Pioneer DJM-450 Mixer and original reggae 45s.  Nice Up!

-DJ Prestige | 2017

Listen/Download – Funky16Corners Pays Tribute to Billy Miller from the WFMU Rock and Soul Ichiban Stream 1/1/17 MP3

Greetings all.

What you see before you today is a downloadable version of a radio show I put together for the WFMU Rock and Soul Ichiban Stream, which ran this past Sunday, January 1, 2017.

The grand poobah of the WFMU/Ichiban, Debbie D asked me to participate in a five hour long birthday tribute to the great Billy Miller, who passed away this past November.

As explained in a post I wrote just after he died, Billy and his wife Miriam Linna were a huge influence on my own musical and pop cultural sensibilities starting in the early 80s via their mighty zine Kicks and later through their work with their label Norton Records.

Norton/Kicks were devoted to plumbing the depths of musical history and paying overdue tribute to some of the wildest, largely unsung artists ever to make records, in garage punk, rockabilly, R&B, soul, surf and beat.

When Debbie asked me to put together a portion of the birthday tribute, I wanted to assemble a collection that reflected the vibe that Billy and Miriam put out into the world and its effect on my own work at Funky16Corners and Iron Leg.

This hour-long set includes plenty of soul and R&B, but also some stuff you wouldn’t normally hear at Funky16Corners, including some rockabilly, and early rock instros.

I think it all fits together well, and I hope you dig it.

So pull down the ones and zeros, and I’ll see you all on Friday.

Keep the faith

Larry

Greetings all

Welcome to the wrap-up of the Funky16Corners 2016 Allnighter/Pledge Drive

We haven’t quite met our goal for 2016, so I’ve put together this recap/wrapup of the Allnighter with links to all of the mixes/pages for the last few weeks so you could see them all in one place, and pick up any that you might have mixed.

This page will stay up until the end of the week, and if you dig what we do here (the Funky16Corners Radio Show, mix archives and all of the same over at our sister blog, Iron Leg)  but haven’t donated, please consider clicking on the Paypal button and tossing something into that hat to help make the 2016 operating budget.

Everyone that donates will receive the new 2016 sticker and badge (see below, as well as any other swag we have remaining) and will be entered into the drawing for the groovy new 45 by the M-Tet.

I’ll be back on Monday with another, brand new BONUS mix of funk and soul, so stay tuned for that!

It is all greatly appreciated!

Greetings all and welcome to the 2016 Funky16Corners Allnighter/Pledge Drive!

This is the time of year where I and some of the finest selectors I know create some brand new mixes and post them here in the hope that you will all show your appreciation by clicking on the Paypal link and tossing something into the hat to help cover our yearly operating budget. This is the 10th Anniversary of the Pledge Drive and the 6th year of the Allnighter format.

This year’s line-up includes mixes from Asbury Park 45 sessions alums DJ Prestige, DJ Prime Mundo, DJ Bluewater, Vincent the Soul Chef, my man in the UK Ben Gibson, Tarik Thornton, HeavySoulBrutha Dave B, Chris Lujan of the M-Tet and the Dirty Dirty Podcast, DJ RP of Funkdefy Ohio and yours truly book-ending the whole thing.

The mixes this year are uniformly excellent, with sounds ranging from funk 45s, to Northern Soul, sweet soul, reggae, modern funk instros, soul jazz and everything in between.

We’ll be posting a mix each weekday for the next few weeks.

We’re going to get things started (and eventually finished) with a two-part mix by yours truly, entitled Queens & Kings. These are each an hour long and feature an hour of danceable soul, first by the ladies, and then by the fellas.
I’ve picked up a lot of outstanding stuff in the past year, including some of my personal Northern Soul grails, a couple of unexpected things (from people you wouldn’t expect, naturally) and lots of other groovy sounds!

So dig it, and we’ll be back tomorrow with DJ Prime Mundo!

You can subscribe to the show as a podcast in iTunes, listen on your mobile device via the TuneIn app, check it out on Mixcloud, or grab an MP3 right here at the blog.

I should also say that the Funky16Corners 2016 Allnighter and Pledge Drive will start next Monday, June 6th.

As in years past, you will get a string of new mixes by myself and some of my favorite selectors, posted one every weekday over the course of more than two weeks.

These mixes will be accompanied by a Paypal/Donate button, so that those of you that dig what we do here (blogs, radio show, hundreds of hours of archived mixes) will toss something into the hat towards the operating budget for the next year.

Example

All donors will also receive the new 2016 Funky16Corners badge and bumper sticker to affix to the garment and flat surface of your choice!

So stay tuned for that (lots of good stuff this year).

__________________________________________________________________________
The mix you see before you today – Funky16Corners Presents – Hot Gravy – was assembled at the behest of the most excellent Music for Modern Living blog, where it premiered last weekend.

Nigel has a good thing going over there, and has presented a number of very cool guest mixes by the best selectors in funk and soul.

This is a solid, hour-long kick in the pants, composed of some of the hottest dance floor soul and R&B bangers in my crates.

There are lots of old faves, a couple of things that might not be familiar, and with the weather finally getting warm, it should provide adequate moving and grooving for your weekend.

I hope you dig it, that you check out Music for Modern Living, and that as always, you…

Keep the faith

Larry

Greetings all.

This past weekend I had the honor of guesting at the Steel Stax Soul Club at Porter’s Pub in Easton, PA.

It was  a little bit of a ride, so we packed up all the Corners in the van and headed West for a little soul spinning (me) and R&R (all of us).

Steel Stax Soul Club is the brainchild of longtime DJ/collector and scooter expert Gene Meredith, who I first met more than 30 years ago back in the mod/garage days of the Dive.

I am always game to get out there and lay down some Northern Soul heat on the decks, and SSSC gave me that opportunity in spades.

I was able to record almost all of the night (you can dig Gene’s sets on his Mixcloud page) including both of my sets. The first set is a mixed bag (including some sweet, and slightly slower stuff) and the second set is all high octane dancers.

It was a great time, with much good music, and a bunch of new additions to my want list. I hope to make it back there to spin again some time in the future.

I hope you dig it (make sure to check out Gene’s sets, too) , and I’ll see you all on Friday.

Keep the Faith

Larry
