Greetings all.

As you all know, I spend as much (or more) time listening to the mixes I put together for Funky16Corners than anyone.

This has everything to do with the fact that all of the content here on the blog has to pass my own “ear test” before you hear it, so the mixes/posts reflect what I’m digging at any given point.

Though – due to circumstances beyond my control -I haven’t played out in more than a year, 2011 was an especially cool/busy time in that respect.

Between stints at Master Groove and Spindletop, and guest spots at Subway Soul (all NYC), Wooly Bully and Sweet Exorcist (both in Mass) I had plenty of opportunities to spin vinyl for groovy people.

The Spindletop night (at Botanica) was an especially cool night (while it lasted) because I had an exceptional amount of freedom in the styles of music I could spin as well as providing an opportunity to play especially long sets.

Back in January of last year, I had a chance to play almost three full hours of soul jazz 45s, and I decided to get things started with a slow-to-midtempo set.

The results – which you see before you (again) – ended up being one of my favorite sets* of the last few years, and I’ve cued it up on the iPod several times since then.

I decided that I’d re-post it for those that might have missed it the first time out.

I hope you dig it, and I’ll see you all on Wednesday.

The name Kai Winding was a very familiar one in my house when I was a kid.

My father is a huge jazz fan and had several ‘Jay and Kai’ albums (the duo of trombonists JJ Johnson and Kai Winding) in his collection.

It was only when I started collecting 45s in earnest – especially Mod soul/jazz – that I discovered that Mr Winding had waxed some very groovy stuff during the 60s.

The Danish-born Winding, who passed away at the age of 61 in 1983, recorded in a wide variety of settings from the 1940s (he played on Miles Davis’ ‘Birth of the Cool’ sessions) on until his death.

He recorded for the Verve label in the 60s, which is when he laid down the very tasty version of Herbie Hancock’s ‘Watermelon Man’.

Like many of his contemporaries, Winding experimented with adding all kinds of pop/R&B flavor into his records, and this is one of his best.

You get lots of that sonorous trombone, mixed in with some grovy combo organ and percussion that makes for a fusion of soul jazz and au-go-go flavors.

It has a discotheque vibe that I dig very much, and I hope you do too.

Welcome to the end of another week (or better yet, the beginning of a groovy weekend?).

The recent web-related crisis seems (keeping the old fingers crossed here) to have been averted for now, so steady on for now. I think I have some studying to do in the meantime.

The song I bring you today – in two different versions – is by any measure of the word, one of my all time favorites.

Written by Clifton James, made a hit by the Jackson Five and Gloria Gaynor, ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’ has become one of those songs that I can listen to be performed by just about anyone. I always pick up versions when I’m out digging and always stop and listen when it shoes up on the radio or in the iPod.

The recordings I offer you this fine day are layed down by two of the masters, Johnny Hammond Smith and Reuben Wilson.

Smith’s version, from his 1971 ‘Breakout’ album is largely a showcase for saxophonist Grover Washington, Jr., who did some of the arrangement on the album. The rhythm section generally comps in the background, with some groovy guitar work (George Benson) and some nice, hard –hitting drums from Billy Cobham.

Reuben Wilson’s take on the tune is not only taken at a faster tempo, but with a little more Hammond in the mix, though the lead is once again taken by the sax (Ramon Morris).

Wilson is one of the great underrated Hammond cats. Most of his better stuff came fairly late in the game, at least as far as the soul jazz/funk thing is concerned. Though he was about the same age as many of his better known contemporaries, he started recording later than most.

His Blue Note sides are excellent, and his stuff on Groove Merchant (as heard here) is worth seeking out as well.

I hope these sounds help you get your weekend off to a mellow start, and I’ll see you all on Monday.

Greetings all and welcome to the middle of another week here at the Corners du Funk.

We here on the coast are in the middle of a ass-kicker of a storm, and while that’s probablyscary enough for most (myself included) Halloween is at hand, and so it behooved me to whip something a little scary onto the blog.

Now – unless you find the combination of thick glasses and groovy vibes frightening…someone probably doesCal Tjader, though scary talented, was not known for inducing fear in his listeners.

However, he did find the time to record and extra smooth and tasty version of that old Hallows Eve perennial, ‘Spooky’.

Originally recorded by Mike Sharpe, and then the Classics IV – who had a huge hit with it in 1968 – ‘Spooky’ is one of those great “fits nicely in Halloween” tunes that doesn’t involve screaming, Frankenstein grunts or any other novelty hoo-hah.

Mr. Tjader recorded the tune on his ‘Cal Tjader Plugs In: Live at the Lighthouse’ LP in 1969, with a great band that included Armando Peraza on percussion and Al Zulaica on electric piano (who adds a lot of flavor to the track).

The band gets a nice groove going here, and Tjaders is – as always – in top form.

His Skye stuff isn’t easy to find, but always worth it when you can.

Funky16Corners 2012 Pledge Drive / Allnighter

Greetings all.

Welcome to the third annual Funky16Corners Pledge Drive/Allnighter!

Though we’ve been doing the Pledge Drive thing since2006, the Allnighter concept first rolled out in 2010, with several hours of mixes by some of the finest selectors I know.

This year we have most of the usual suspects, including several Asbury Park 45 Sessions alumni, as well as my man Tony C from the UK and Tarik Thornton.

The sounds run the gamut of classic soul, funk, reggae, rock steady, old school Hammond 45s and all connective points in between.

If you read the blog on the reg you already know that the past year has been an exceptionally challenging one here.
It wouldn’t be reaching to state that keeping Funky16Corners (and Iron Leg) up and running had a lot to do with maintaining my sanity over the last eight months.

There’s something to be said for keeping a small island of creative stability afloat during a crisis, and that’s what the blog has been.

Much of that has – as always – come from the interchange with the readers, listeners, fellow vinyl travelers, and DJs. Your contributions, whether informational, conversational, sometimes monetary or sometimes all of the above, have kept Funky16Corners rolling along.

This November will mark the 8th anniversary of the blog (something akin to 800 internet years!) and creating and running the blog has become a big part of my life. Through it I’ve learned a great deal, met many incredibly cool people and gotten to DJ in many, many cool places.

The Pledge Drive aspect of this yearly event is an important one.

Funky16Corners – all of the text, graphics and sound files – resides on paid server space, a bill that comes due around this time every year. Your donations help pay for that.

Blogging has always been an ephemeral pursuit, partly because not everyone has the interest in keeping one going for very long, but also because it rarely rises above the level of a casual pursuit for most people. They start a blog, post most files temporarily and depart as soon as their interest wanes.

Funky16Corners may very well have gone the way of most blogs (I don’t know the actual percentage of music blogs that last more than a year, but anecdotally I’d guess that it’s below 10%) but after getting it rolling (with a slightly different format) in 2004, and changing platforms twice (finally ending up with the self-hosting WordPress model) I think we have at long last settled into lasting form.

The basic format of how I communicate with the audience through the blog has always remained fairly constant, with a pictures and labels (what the vinyl nerds of the world know as record porn) and some written context to tie it all together.

Along the way, the Funky16Corners Radio Podcast mixes worked their way into the flow, then the actual Funky16Corners Radio Show (Friday nights at 9PM on Viva Radio and then archived here) and then in 2010 the Funky16Corners Soul Club/Allnighters so I could present mixes by other selectors.

What we have now, in the middle of 2012 is –including this year’s Allnighter mixes – close to 150 mixes and another 110 episodes of the radio show on-line for your (and my) listening pleasure.

And my friends, pleasure is what it’s all about; the pleasure that great music, some rare, some not so rare, can bring to those willing to open their ears.

That’s why I do it, and as always, I hope you dig it.

The tune I bring you today should be a (very) familiar one, but I’m guessing that for a lot of you, the version will be new.

Most folks know the most famous take of  Gene McDaniels’ ‘Compared To What’ via the 1969 recording by Les McCann and Eddie Harris from the ‘Swiss Movement’ LP.

That’s certainly the first place I heard it, followed by the also quite excellent variations laid down by folks like Roberta Flack, Della Reese and the Northern Soul fave by Mr Flood’s Party.

As is always the case, my inquiring mind wanted to know what the first version of the song was, assuming (incorrectly) that it had to have been by Gene McDaniels himself.

McDaniels got his start as a popular recording artist with “A Hundred Pounds of Clay’, a Top 10 hit in 1961. His chart run, which included tunes like ‘Tower of Strength’ and ‘Point of No Return’ (later a hit when covered by Georgie Fame in the UK) ended in 1962 (though he continued to record into the 70s).

I still have no idea how McDaniels got ‘Compared to What’ to Les McCann, but it would appear (unless someone can place it earlier) that the song was first recorded (the take you’re hearing today) by McCann on his 1967 LP ‘Plays the Hits’ on the Limelight label.

‘Compared to What’ is by any measure one of the great, soulful protest songs of the 60s, and McCann really lays into it with gusto, making it the highlight of an otherwise fairly unremarkable album filled with pop covers.

In fact, I had the record for a few years before I even noticed that it included ‘Compared to What’!

Though it’s possible that McDaniels himself recorded his most famous composition at some point, I have yet to track it down.

I don’t believe that this version has ever been reissued.

It’s an inspired bit of soul jazz and yet another piece of a very interesting puzzle.

I hope all is well in your end of the universe.

The tune I bring you today is yet another example of why, when you’re out doing the DJ thing you need to keep your ears wide open.

Back in the olden days, when the mighty Asbury Park 45 Sessions crew still walked the earth my man DJ Prestige augmented the Avengers of funk and soul with a stellar slate of guest selectors.

It was in March of 2008 that we were joined by the mighty Dave Withers who came to the decks packing serious heat.

Withers was a formidable selector, not only in the rarity of his 45s but in the diversity and imagination of his selections. I was introduced to at least a half dozen incredibly good tracks during his set, one of which you see before you today.

I had never heard of the Quartette Tres Bien before, but once I heard ‘Boss Trest Bien’ my wig was good and truly flipped.

Quartette Tres Bien got their start playing and recording in their native St Louis, before being picked up for national distribution by Decca in 1964.

‘Boss Tres Bien’ appeared on their debut LP that year, and is a remarkable bit of soul jazz.

The group, led by pianist Jeter Thompson, bassist Richard Simmons, drummer Albert St James and percussionist Percy James (the real key to this particular record) went on to record several albums for Decca through the 60s.

The LP edit of ‘Boss Tres Bien’ (the in-demand 45 edit is about two minutes shorter) starts out with some brilliant interplay between St James and James (dig that crazy bass drum action) trading licks on the traps and the bongos, before the bass and piano join in.

Once things build up a full head of steam a hand-clapping audience pushes the group harder and faster. You have to hang in for when the drummer and bassist start passing the baton back and forth.

It is a thing of wonder, and ought to be much better known.

The tune I bring you today comes from one of the most reliably groovy acts to emerge from the British beat boom, Brian Auger, Julie Driscoll and the Trinity.

Auger is one of the truly great Hammond slingers to come out of the UK in the 60s, alongside giants like Georgie Fame, Steve Winwood, Graham Bond, Jon Lord and Dave Davani.

Brian Auger wasn’t any run-of-the-mill organ grinder hammering out blues riffs with his elbows either. His roots were in jazz and he had the chops to bring the heat.

Auger and Driscoll fist worked together as part of the legendary Steampacket, where they grooved alongside none other than Long John Baldry and a soulful Scots gravedigger by the name of Rod Stewart.

When the Steampacket disbanded Auger and Driscoll remained together, with the Trinity as the backing band.

It was in that incarnation that the created a grip of enduring dance floor classics, melding jazz, R&B, beat and psychedelia.

The group in that form lasted from 1967 to 1969, and created some smashing singles such as ‘Indian Ropeman’, ‘This Wheel’s On Fire’, ‘Why Am I Treated So Bad’ and the disc you see before you today.

Interestingly, ‘Black Cat’ is a Driscoll-free affair, as is its flip side, a very cool cover of Wes Montgomery’s ‘In and Out’.

Released in 1968 (there’s a very cool promo video for the tune) ‘Black Cat’ is a positively storming, monster of a tune, with a vocal by Auger (not all that common), heavy horn chart and some absolutely fiery Hammond action.

Like many of the band’s best tracks it has more than enough momentum for the dancers (it’d fit right in if anyone ever decided to do a recreation of Swinging London right, I’m giving you the stink eye Austin Powers).

There’s also a very cool version of the song, recorded live – and in Italian! – that was released as a single in Europe and on an Italian pressing of the ‘Open’ LP.

After Driscoll split the group in 1970, Auger and the Trinity continued to record, if in a more jazzy, progressive style for one more LP before evolving into Oblivion Express.

I should start off by reminding you that the Funky16Corners Radio Show returns to the airwaves of the interwebs this Friday night at 9PM on Viva Radio. I should also mention that I’ll be joining the HPRS vinyl collective to sell some records this Saturday 3/31. The sale runs from 11-5 at 960 Green Street in Iselin, NJ (not too far off of Rt1). I’ll have a couple of boxes of LPs (lots of soul jazz and 60s rock) as well as a few boxes of 45s (funk, soul, jazz, rock etc) and some ephemera. If you’re in the area and have a taste for records come by and sample the wares.

The tune I bring you today is a stellar cover of what in unquestionably one of my all time favorite songs.

When I was a kid, Clifton Davis was famous as an actor, which is why I was shocked years later to discover that he was responsible for composing ‘Never Can Say Goodbye’.

Whether it is in the original hit version by the Jackson Five (1971), the epic disco reading by Gloria Gaynor (1974) or even in the slow burn by Isaac Hayes, the song has a remarkably powerful melody that has drilled itself deep into my brain.

I pick up covers of the song wherever I find them, which is why I grabbed (first) the 45 of Grant Green’s version, and then years later the LP from which it was pulled, 1971’s ‘Visions’ (which is where this recording is from).

Green takes a slow, late-night approach to the tune with some very nice soloing, but the real key to why this particular arrangement resonates with me is Billy Wooten’s vibes.

Known to crate diggers and collectors as the man behind the Wooden Glass (a group that also included pianist Emmanuel Riggins, who also joined Wooten in Green’s band and plays on this date), Wooten also contributed to a few albums by the Soulful Strings and Richard Evans.

Wooten’s vibes add a ringing counterpoint to the guitar and electric piano, bouncing between the right and left channels, becoming in many ways the heart of the record.

It’s a wonderful interpretation of the song and one of my faves.

I had something else planned for today, but last night word started to filer through the haze of the interwebs that one of my favorite past masters of the Hammond organ, the mighty Leon Spencer, had passed away.

I have yet to locate any real details, but when I do I will pass them on.

Spencer may not have been a household name (except for my house, maybe) but he was a very important figure of the crucial, funky, soul jazz years of the late 60s and early 70s.

He only recorded a few albums as a leader (between 1971 and 1974) but was a very prominent sideman on Prestige and Blue Note dates, backing cats like Lou Donaldson, Melvin Sparks, Rusty Bryant, Gene Ammons and others.

I’m posting four cuts for your listening pleasure today.

The first two (recorded 12/7/70) , Spencer’s cover of “Message From the Meters” and his original “The Slide” appeared on his Prestige LP, ‘Sneak Preview’. The all-star group, featuring Melvin Sparks, Idris Muhammad and Grover Washington Jr really bring the funk on the Meters tune, and get to settle into a more relaxed groove on ‘The Slide’.

The third features an example of Spencer’s work as a sideman (recorded 9/14/70*), backing Sparks (again with Muhammad) on his ‘Sparks’ LP, covering Sly and the Family Stone’s ‘Thank You (Fallettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)’. I’m posting both halves of the 45 since you get to hear Spencer stretch out a little bot more on part two.

Leon Spencer had a fluid, economical style that always demonstrated an ability to weave in and out of the groove. His playing was clearly deep inside the soul jazz “thing” while also being consistently inventive, something that cannot be said of all organists active in the period.

He will be missed.

Greetings all.

I hope the middle of the week, aka dio del humpo finds you all well.

If you fall by Funky16Corners on the reg, you already know that I often find myself in a jazz bag, but even the most devoted might be surprised on how deep that bag really is.

Thanks to my father, a musician and a fan, I’ve been hearing jazz my entire life, from Dixieland, to Chicago style, West Coast cool, and hard bop (in my parents house) and adding post bop, fusion and free jazz in my adulthood.

There was even a period in my late 20s to my early 30s where I listened to little else.

There are often jazz and jazz-related features here on Funky16Corners (and on the radio show) but those are generally restricted to the groove-based and the funky.

I’m not here to tell you that I’m going to start rhapsodizing about my deep and abiding love for Clifford Brown and Thelonious Monk, or that I’m going to start another blog, because I’m not (insane), but rather to preface the inclusion of another groovy, funky track, that happens to have been made by one of the most prominent innovators in the history of jazz.

It has been discussed here before, but to reprise briefly, there are two kinds of jazzers you will find here at Funky16Corners, those who’s career is rooted almost exclusively in soul jazz/groove, in that those sounds were their figurative bread and butter, and old school players who found themselves on the margin as the 60s arrived and took a detour into a more contemporary sound in an effort to stay current.

John Birks ‘Dizzy’ Gillespie found himself in 1971 teetering on the border between those two groups.

It was Gillespie, who along with Monk, Charlie Parker, Kenny Clarke and many others verily gave birth to Bebop in the 1940s.

Dizzy had the extra added benefit of also being a hepcat supreme, becoming in essence the face of the movement with his beret, goatee and hip lingo. People might have heard of Parker or later (much later) Monk, but they knew what Dizzy looked like, and in the earliest days of the spread of electronic media, that meant that for many, he was THE face of modern jazz.

I was lucky enough to see him twice in the late 70s and early 80s.

The tune I bring you today was recorded in 1971, when keyboardist Mike Longo was working in Dizzy’s band.

While there were old school boppers like James Moody on the session, you also had Longo, Bernard Purdie and Phil Upchurch as well.

The sound of ‘Soul Kiss’ is about soul jazzy as Dizzy ever got, and it’s not hard to see cuts like this as his bid to stay in the rapidly evolving game.

The groove is hard, the organ wails, and the only indication the listener gets that Gillespie was involved are the short, sharp trumpet bursts in the chorus.

The album that it comes from ‘The Real Thing’ is a very funky affair, especially for Gillespie, and as a result it is sweated heavily by the crate digging set.

I have yet to find a vinyl copy of the LP, but the 45 I bring you today will do for now.

The tune I bring you today is a very groovy bit of swinging soul jazz from one of my faves, Mr Herbie Mann.

I know that there are folks out there that don’t sweat Herbie the way I do, but you know I dig me some flute, as well as soul jazz of all kinds, which brings us back around to Herbie.

I would go so far as to say, with his early 70s, bare chested attempts at mainstreaming (which have their charm as well) Herbie was not only a very capable instrumentalist, but was also forward thinking, staying well ahead of the curve as it relates to the introduction of world music sounds as well as working a solid groove into his music.

He got his start in a Latin jazz bag, but by the early 60s was weaving in R&B as well and making some great records.

Now, I have a grip of Herbie’s albums, but the one that eluded me for the longest time was the one that contained today’s selection.

‘Our Mann Flute’ is – as far as I’ve seen – the most expensive of Mann’s 60s Atlantic output, mainly because it has such a groovy ‘spy craze’ cover, which means that along with soul jazz folks like me, the album is being chased by exotica fans and Beatle-booted modernists as well, thereby driving up its price and in some cases taking it out of the bargain bin (where you can find most of Herbie’s albums) and up onto the wall in a snappy, acid-free, plastic sleeve.

That said, though the version of the theme from ‘Our Man Flint’ is more Iron Leg material, the tune I bring you today is groovy indeed.

If the author credit on ‘Scratch’ rings any bells it’s probably because Wayne Henderson was part of the Jazz Crusaders, with whom this tune originated.

Mann’s version of ‘Scratch’ sees a front line of trumpet and flute (backed by pulsing saxophones) stating the main theme, before Herbie gets to step out in front for a solo.

The cut has a real dance floor push to it with some swinging flautistry by Mann and tight backing from his band.

It is a groovy cut indeed, and I hope you dig it as much as I do.
