A Note on the 2019 Pledge Drive

The focus on using Patreon to raise money to pay the bills around here (paying for server space/bandwidth and broadcast fees) has proven to make a lot of sense, moreso than the previously used Paypal model.

If you dig any of the stuff I do here, any of the radio shows, or the mix archives, or even if you’re one of the few that still read the blog posts, please consider signing up for Patreon and making a small, recurring, monthly donation of a few dollars.

You can click on the link below.

It’s pretty simple, very safe and a great way to keep Funky16Corners up and running for another year.

So thanks in advance, and enjoy the tunes!

Keep the Faith

Larry

_____________________________________________________________

The pledging will continue this year with Patreon (click here or on the logo below to go to the Funky16Corners page) , where you will be able to spread your contributions out over the entire year, which will help cover the ongoing server/broadcast/hardware expenses. This year has seen the move to 100 percent live broadcasting (Mixlr.com/Funky16corners)  and continued hardware and software upgrades at Funky16Corners central, to keep the radio/podcasting experience as seamless and groovy as possible. So please dig deep so we can continue to do the same, and if you’re already a Patreon donor, please accept my heartfelt thanks!

Greetings all.

The Funky16Corners 2019 Allnighter/Pledge Drive is here!

Things are looking (much) different this year.

This is the 10th year of doing a pledge drive here at Funky16Corners, and the landscape, and (forgive the use of the word) ‘mission’ of Funky16Corners has evolved fairly drastically since the blog opened it’s doors nearly 15 years ago (not counting the webzine years).

The world of music blogging is not what it once was. The way people access music and information on the web is a whole different thing than it was when I started. Traffic is a small fraction of what it once was.

The main thrust of what I do here at Funky16Corners has also changed significantly.

Starting with single-song blog posts in the early days, moving on to DJ mixes, then the beginning of the Funky16Corners Radio Show (which is nearing the 500 episode mark!), then the various and sundry guest mixes, in and outside of the pledge drive context.

I have to begin by sending out my thanks to all of the amazing DJs that have been generous with their time and their records over the years, all of whom I am proud to have featured at Funky16Corners.

The last few years have seen my move into live radio broadcasts, with Funky16Corners Radio Show and Testify!, my show for WFMU’s Give the Drummer Radio appearing weekly, and the Iron Leg Radio Show (nearing 100 episodes) monthly.

As a result of the workload associated with this change, the frequency of blog posts has decreased to once a week.

This year I decided that I needed to take a break from the Allnighter/Summer of Soul format, if only to ease off of the workload associated with putting it all together (and maybe spend a little more time with the fam while they’re home for the summer).

In it’s place I have created two brand new, hour-long mixes.

The first, Breaking Down the Walls of Heartache is an hour of dancefloor soul, with a grip of new and recent arrivals in the Funky16Corners crates.

The second. Loose and Groovy is a collection of instrumentals, many of them funky, packed with breaks and loopable grooves for days.

Larry

Charles Earland – (You Caught Me) Smiling

Charles Earland

Example

Listen/Download – Charles Earland – (You Caught Me) Smiling MP3

Greetings all.

I come to you today with an exceptionally tasty bit of Hammond goodness, courtesy of one of my all time faves, the mighty Charles Earland. It is made all the more tasty by its roots as a Sly and the Family Stone cover.

Earland was the preeminent second-wave (post Jimmy Smith) Pennsylvania Hammond giants, getting his start in the early 60s and then moving on to a solid career all the way through the 90s until his passing in 1999. His early, local Philly 45s are classics, as are all the albums he made for the soul jazz powerhouse Prestige Records.

Today’s selection is the opening track on his 1972 LP ‘Live at the Lighthouse’.

Recorded at the storied jazz club in Hermosa Beach, CA, it’s a fantastic set with Earland leading a tight band.

The song, originally titled ‘You Caught Me Smilin’ (truncated to ‘Smiling’ here) originated on Sly and the Family Stone’s 1971 LP ‘There’s a Riot Goin’ On’. The original, vocal version of the song has a kind of dreamy/stoned vibe to it. Earland’s cover lights a bit of a fire under it, with a big Hammond sound that sometimes verges on (but never crossed into) distortion.

The album as a whole is quite good, but this track is by far my fave.

I hope you dig it, and I’ll see you all next week.

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Emanuel Laskey – I Need Somebody

Emanuel Laskey

Listen/Download – Emanuel Laskey – I Need Somebody MP3

Greetings all.

I hope the new week finds you well.

Today’s selection is one of the pile of 45s that I picked up while DJing at the Keystone State Soul Weekender in 2018.

Emanuel Laskey was a journeyman soul singer who recorded for a variety of Detroit-based labels through the 1960s and 1970s, including Thelma, Westbound and Stag.

‘I Need Somebody’ was recorded for Thelma in 1964, with backing from the Fabulous Peps. The record charted locally on the R&B and Pop charts and had some regional R&B success elsewhere (thus the licensing and pressing of the 45 on the Pittsburgh, PA NPC label).

‘I Need Somebody’ is a remarkable piece of midtempo 60s soul, opening with an unusual, raw guitar figure (probably played by producer Don Davis, and I wonder if Eric Clapton heard it…) , backs by the vibes and organ. Laskey’s vocal, often veering into falsetto is perfection, and the arrangement manages to weave together the technical limitations of the session (the studio, not the musicians, who all turn in an excellent performance) into something really special.

The flipside, ‘Tomorrow’ is a sweet ballad with some nice piano.

Laskey is the kind of guy who had talent to spare, recorded some great records but is now known almost exclusively by hardcore soul fans.

That’s a shame.

I hope you dig the cut, and I will see you all next week.

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Keep the faith

Listen/Download – Kip Anderson – A Knife and a Fork MP3

Greetings all.

The first time I heard today’s selection I was pretty much knocked on my ass.

Though I was familiar with the Rockpile version of ‘A Knife and a Fork’ from the 1980 ‘Seconds of Pleasure’ album, I had no idea that the song was a cover.

Kip Anderson was one of those singers that hovered on the border between soul and blues for his entire career. He was born in South Carolina in 1942, recording his first 45 for Veejay in 1959.

He recorded ‘A Knife and a Fork’ in 1966 in Muscle Shoals.

The song – with it’s dark, humorous bent – has a rock solid beat, with guitar, bass, drums and combo organ pushing things along at a brisk pace with a sax solo coming.

Like Tommy Tucker’s ‘Long Tall Shorty’, it seems to almost plod at the beginning, but picks up steam almost imperceptibly until its ready for the dance floor.

Anderson would continue to record for a variety of labels before a heroin dependency led to a 10 year stint in prison.

After he got out of jail he recorded both gospel and soul, recording for the Ichiban label in the 90s.

He eventually passed away in 2007.

I hope you dig the tune and I’ll see you all next week.

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Margie Joseph – My Love

Greetings all.

If you follow my show for WFMU’s Give the Drummer Radio, you may have seen that the DJ premium I put together for this year’s fundraising marathon was dedicated to soul and funk artists covering 70s AM gold.

I’ve made collecting such records something of a sideline in the last few years, and today’s selection is a fine example of the subgenre (and was included on that premium CD).

Margie Joseph was a Mississippi-born singer who recorded a bunch of singles for Okeh and Volt in the 60s and a few albums for Volt in the early 70s, before moving on to record for Atlantic and their subsidiaries into the late 80s.

Today’s selection hails from her 1974 ‘Sweet Surrender’ LP, which contains many such covers, including two Bread tunes, a very early cover of Billy Joel’s ‘He’s Got a Way’ and the tune I bring you today, Paul McCartney and Wings’ ‘My Love’.

Back in the early 70s, when I was deep inside the AM radio thing, I was not a huge fan of the original Wings version of ‘My Love’, put off by Paul’s ‘whoa whoa whoa’s in the chorus (though it’s fair to say that the song has grown on me in the ensuing decades.

Margie Joseph, backed by a solid band of NY and Philly studio pros gives the song a smooth, pretty reading, treating the melody gently, and finessing the chorus.

The overall effect is as if the song had been written for her.

I dig it a lot, and I hope you do too.

I hope you dig the tune, and I’ll see you all next week.

Kelly Gordon – If That Don’t Get It, It Ain’t There

Greetings all.

The tune I bring you today is from the sole album by Kelly Gordon.

I forget where I first heard about Gordon, but I do remember that it had to do with today’s selection being an interesting, funky track.

After I grabbed a copy of the album, I dug a little deeper into Gordon’s story and discovered some interesting things.

First and foremost, Gordon was the composer of one of Frank Sinatra’s biggest hits, ‘That’s Life’. He was also the producer on Bobbie Gentry’s classic run of mid-60s albums, including the epic ‘Ode To Billie Joe’ (he appears to have been a staff producer at Capitol records, working the board for a wide variety of artists).

Though he recorded a few 45s under his own name through the 60s, 1969’s ‘Defunked’ was his only album.

Featuring a variety of R&B based styles (leaning in the same direction as Joe South during the same period), the album also includes the first recording of the song ‘He Ain’t Heavy He’s My Brother’.

Today’s selection is the only instrumental on the album. ‘If That Don’t Get It, It Ain’t There’ features twangy guitar, funky drums and a chunky electric piano foundation, along with some punchy horns. It’s a great slice of funky rock, and the kind of thing people would be crawling over each other to get had it been issued on 45.

Sadly, Gordon was stricken with lung cancer and passed away in 1981 at the age of 49.

I hope you dig the track, and I’ll see you all next week.

Lonnie Brooks and the 4 Souls – Soul Meeting

Listen/Download – Lonnie Brooks and the 4 Souls – Soul Meeting MP3

Greetings all.

Today’s selection is a great example of a guy that started out in an R&B/Soul bag, and went on to make his mark in the blues.

Lonnie Brooks (nee Lee Evans Jr) got his start in his native Louisiana, made his way up to Chicago where he started out as Guitar Jr.

By the mid-1960s he was making soul 45s on his own and as part of Lonnie Brooks and the 4 Souls for labels like USA, Chess and Chirrup.

Today’s tune was the b-side of a 1967/68 45 and is one of my fave shout-out records (where one artist mentions another).

‘Soul Meeting’ has a slightly funky underpinning, and starts out with mentions of James Brown, Aretha Franklin, as well as Jackie Wilson, Etta James, Booker T and the MGs. Ruby Andrews, Joe Tex, Temptations, Jackie Wilson, Gladys Knight, Otis Clay, Wilson Pickett, Junior Walker, and Sam and Dave.

There’s not a lot of ‘song’ here, but it’s still a ot of fun hearing Lonnie shout out (and in some cases imitate) the hot artists of the day.

The a-side, ‘Good Soul Lovin’ is a killer as well.

I hope you dig the tune, and I’ll see you all next week.

Louisiana Red – Sugar Hips

Listen/Download – Louisiana Red – Sugar Hips MP3

Greetings all.

Today’s selection is a small slice of the discography of the great Louisiana Red.

Born Iverson Minter in 1932, Louisiana Red recorded for a variety of labels (under his own name) from the early 60s on.

His 45 discography is relatively brief, dwarfed by his LP catalog which stretches from 1963 to his death in 2012.

His style mixed traditional acoustic blues, electric blues and R&B, the latter of which is in evidence on 1964’s ‘Sugar Hips’.

Ironically, ‘Sugar Hips’ was the b-side of his biggest commercial success, ‘I’m Too Poor To Die’ which grazed the Billboard Hot 100 and made the Cashbox Top 30.

‘Sugar Hips’ is the kind of fast moving, gritty R&B that the Mods in the UK were crowding dance floors for.

It has a persistent guitar/bass/drums kick, but it’s the wailing harmonica that really starts a grease fire. Red’s vocal interjections sound like Slim Harpo and Howling Wolf got trapped in the same echo chamber.

‘Sugar Hips’ was recorded in New York for Henry Glover, who along with sleazy, mob-connected Roulette Records honcho Morris Levy tacked his name onto the writing credits with Red.

It’s a very groovy side indeed, and I hope you all dig it.

See you all next week.

Ronnie Milsap – Ain’t No Soul Left In These Ole Shoes

Listen/Download – Ronnie Milsap – Ain’t No Soul Left In These Ole Shoes MP3

Greetings all.

Today’s selection is one of my favorite versions of one of my favorite songs (great how is works out that way, n’est ce pas?).

Ronnie Milsap was one of the biggest country stars of the 1970s and 1980s, but believe it or not he got his start as a soul singer.

Milsap, who was born almost completely blind, learned how to play the piano, and though he was supposed to go to law school, he left his academic pursuits behind for a career in music.

He was lucky enough to sign with Scepter records, and managed to score his first hit with the Ashford and Simpson tune ‘Never Had It So Good’ (backed with another of their songs ‘Let’s Go Get Stoned’) in 1965.

His follow up was the first recording of Artie Resnick and Joey Levine’s ‘Ain’t No Soul (Left In These Old Shoes), which would go on to be something of a 1960s soul standard with recordings by Major Lance, the Corvairs, Kenny Bernard, and Tami Lynn among others.

Milsap’s version is among the rawest of them all, starting out with a fuzzy combo organ, prominent drums and a wailing vocal by Milsap. The arrangement by Tommy Kaye is fantastic, with a great horn chart and a hard-charging tempo that made the record a huge fave on Northern Soul dance floors in later years.

Milsap kept a bit of R&B flavor in his later successes, yet nothing as full on soulful as this.

I hope you dig the tune, and I’ll see you all next week.
