Funky16Corners Boogaloo Mardi Gras, first posted in 2012 has rerun in this space every year since then.

As I have procured lots of excellent New Orleans vinyl in the interim, I thought that it behooved me to dig back into the crates and whip something new on y’all.

F16C: Keep the Fire Burning is just a hair over an hour of high quality New Orleans soul 45s, all of which are suitable for rug-cutting, second lining and however you are moved when the music comes on.

Allen Toussaint and Eddie Bo are both heavily represented as songwriters, producers, arrangers and in Eddie’s case, performer, and there are lots of other Crescent City masters (and mistresses) getting down in the grooves.

So pull down the ones and zeroes, get out your um-ba-rella and Mardi Gras!

Greetings all.

Long time followers of the Funky16Corners thing will be aware of my deep and abiding love for the music of the mighty Eddie Bo.

In the annals of New Orleans R&B/soul auteurs, Bo resides in the pantheon with giants like Allen Toussaint and Wardell Quezerge.

His career stretched from the 1950s up until his death in 2009, and he was a prolific songwriter, recording artist and producer.

It was in my pursuit of anything and everything Bo-related that I dug up this 45 more than a decade ago.

Though I only knew the name Tommy Ridgley in passing, the presence of an Eddie Bo writing credit made me put the 45 in my keeper pile and bring it home.

The extent of Bo’s career is often difficult to pin down because like many of his contemporaries, he was at the mercy of the whims of the independent record industry, label owners, wrangling over publishing and restrictive contracts (like Toussaint, Bo often wrote pseudonymously).

That said, Bo was a busy man, on his own records, and crafting the records of others as a composer, arranger, producer, musician or any combination of the above.

Tommy Ridgley was a similarly situated, journeyman recording artist (though mainly as a singer), having started his recording career in the early 50s as a vocalist with Dave Bartholemew and then under his own name for a variety of national (Atlantic, Herald) and local (Ric, Cinderella, Hep’Me, Sans, Blue Jay, White Cliffs among others) labels up into the late 80s.

‘In the Same Old Way’ was released in 1969 but has a somewhat earlier sound.

Opening with a solid, basic rhythm section and a wonderful horn arrangement, Ridgely comes in (with female backing singers deep in the mix) with a great vocal.

The record was produced by local New Orleans DJ Bob Robin, aka Robert Echols who produced a wide range of NOLA artists through the 60s, including Gerri Hall, Senator Jones, Robert Parker and Van Broussard, as well as working as a New Orleans distributor/A&R guy for Stax records. Robin also produced Ridgley’s 1966 International City 45 ‘My Love Gets Stronger’.

Ridgley had a smooth tenor, with just a hint of a New Orleans twang to it, and though his chart success was minimal, it’s easy to understand why people kept taking him into the studio.

Ridgley continued to record into the mid-1990s, and kept performing until his death in 1999.

I whip a new episode on you each and every Friday, filled with the best in funk, soul, jazz and rare groove, all on original vinyl.

We close out the week with something unusual.

Back in the day, when I was scouring the record bins of the universe in search of anything and everything Eddie Bo-related, someone (I forget who, but thanks…) pointed me in the direction of a 1976 LP by a Boston group called Duke and the Drivers.

Duke and the Drivers were an R&B-based bar and club band out of Boston (not unlike their compadres the J. Geils Band) who recorded two albums and a couple of singles for ABC records in the mid 70s.

How they got their hands on Eddie Bo’s ‘Check Your Bucket’ (released in 1970 and an obscurity pretty much everywhere outside of the New Orleans city limits) I do not know. That said, they do a nice, mellow version of the song, and it’s easy to imagine this being a highlight of their live set. The song is apparently a signature number of theirs, and they re-recorded it on a 2003 live album.

Late last week, while I was checking an old e-mail account and found a notification of a comment on the oldest version of the blog.

The comment itself was semi-cryptic, but when I followed it to the original post I realized that the commenter was telling me that James ‘Skip’ Easterling, one of the great blue-eyed soul singers out of New Orleans had passed away.

Oddly enough, initial searches turned up a death notice, but no mention in any of the local New Orleans papers (since remedied).

Easterling, long a favorite of mine had a recording career that lasted from 1961 into the mid 70s, making a string of 45s for New Orleans labels like Ron, Alon and Instant (he also had at least one self-released 45 that I’ve never heard).

Easterling got his start wavering between R&B and pop sounds, but by the time he went into the studio with Eddie Bo in 1967, he was firmly in the soul camp.

The record he made with Bo, ‘Keep the Fire Burning’ b/w ‘The Grass Is Greener’ is one of the finest mid-decade 45s to come out of the Crescent City, with a smoking dancer on one side and a heartfelt ballad on the flip.

Easterling’s sojourn with Bo was brief, and by 1970, he was in the studio with Huey Piano Smith, recording for Instant.

Smith’s late-period work for Instant is consistently good, and largely unheralded since so many of the post-3300 (catalog numbers, when Smith was doing most of his work for the label) 45s are very scarce (there are a bunch I’m still looking for).

Easterling’s first two 45s for Instant are his best, and oddly enough still fairly easy to track down.

His version of the old Willie Dixon standard ‘I’m Your Hoochie Koochie Man’ is a wild, smoothly funky reworking of the song that owes a debt to King Floyd’s ‘Groove Me’. The arrangement, with electric piano and tastefully applied horns (and flute!) is a subtle masterpiece.

The record was a hit in New Orleans and some other southern markets, but was sadly the high water mark of Easterling’s chart success.

The flip is a very nice version of Jesse Hill’s ‘Ooh Poo Pah Do’, which features a great vocal by Easterling and great playing by the band (listen to the electric piano ooze up through the mix).

His next 45 is one of those records that is painfully obscure, but ought to be regarded as one of the finest records to come out of New Orleans in the early 70s.

‘To Weak to Break the Chains’ (written by Huey Smith) combines, R&B, soul, funk and even a touch of timely psychedelia (dig that backwards guitar!), all wrapped in a stellar vocal performance by Easterling. The tune has an off-kilter, purely New Orleans rhythm to it, with some remarkable interplay between the drums, horns and rhythm guitar.

That record’s flipside, ‘I’m Your Man’ rolls in a slower groove, with some nice flute and vibes accents.

All told, Easterling laid down 15 (maybe 16) 45s in his career, and like so many great singers in New Orleans never really broke through outside the city limits despite the quality of his catalog.

He did continue to perform, appearing at at least one of the Ponderosa Stomp shows.

There was a UK compilation of his recordings that came out in the late 80s on the Charly label, but as far as I can tell, aside from some shady looking comps in iTunes, his work is almost completely out of print.

So dig these tunes, watch for a tribute on the Funky16Corners Radio Show in the new year, and raise a glass to a really groovy singer.

Eddie Bo

I hope the middle of the week finds you all well.

It has been far too long since we last visited with the mighty Eddie Bo.

Bo was one of the indisputable kings of New Orleans R&B, soul and funk, working from the 50s until his death in 2009.

‘Fallin’ in Love Again’ was the b-side of his first 45 for Joe Banashak’s Seven B label in 1966.

He would go on to record six singles for the label, one of which, his duet with Inez Cheatham, ‘Lover and a Friend’ was picked up for national distribution by Capitol.

‘Fallin’ In Love Again’ features a sweet vocal by Bo, some great female backing vocals and some great New Orleans guitar (George Davis?).

The song owes a structural/stylistic debt to Marvin Gaye’s ‘Hitch Hike’, especially the breaks in the chorus.

As far as Bo’s Seven B 45s go, this one is on the more affordable side, usually gettable in the 30-50 dollar range.

That said, I hope you dig it, and I’ll be back on Friday with a hot new Hammond mix!

Greetings all

Welcome to day two of the Funky16Corners 10th Anniversary celebration.

Today’s mix is composed of my favorite funk 45s from my crates.

Though the roots of my soul fandom lie in southern soul, it was the funk 45 boom that got me moving with the web zine and the blog.

There’s something about the heat and the syncopation that come with a really heavy funk 45 that always gets me moving.

Aside from the inventor, James Brown, the man whose music had a lot to do with my love of funk (and was my gateway into the sounds of New Orleans) was the late, great Eddie Bo.

There are no less than five New Orleans 45s in the mix – three of them Eddie Bo or Bo-adjacent– and one need only map out the records in this set to see where my passions were over the last 15 years or so.

New Orleans, Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit and Los Angeles, the sounds of America’s cities in the late 60s and early 70s, always stacked to the rafters with drums, drums and more drums.

There are some records in this mix (and in all of the mixes this week) that I would rank among the greatest funk of all time, including the Meters ‘Cardova’, Lou Courtney’s ‘Hot Butter’n’All’, James Brown’s ‘Hot Pants’ and Laura Lee’s “Crumbs Off the Table’ among them.

As I said in Monday’s post, you may not agree with all of my selections, and by no means are these mixes supposed to represent any definitive list of the ‘best’ that’s out there, but rather my personal favorites.

So put on your hot pants and slide out onto the dance floor.

I hope the new week finds you well.

It was at the end of last week that news came down that the legendary Cosimo Matassa had slipped the surly bonds of earth at the age of 88.

If you are not familiar with the name, if you are a regular here at the Corners, you are most certainly hip to the sounds that he helped bring into the world.

Matassa was, from the early 1950s, the recording/mastering engineer of record for most (not much, MOST) of the music – rock’n’roll, R&B, soul and funk – laid down in the Crescent City, as well as  a label owner and record distributor.

I won’t go into much detail here, because the extremely long and complicated story has already been told (and is still being added to) at the mighty Cosimo Code website by cats like Davie Gordon, Red Kelly, John Broven, John ‘Sir Shambling’ Ridley and Peter Gibbon.

There, they have endeavored to compile a list of recordings recorded, or mastered by Matassa, using his unique coding system.

Your next stop should be the Cosimo Code site, where anyone with even a passing interest in New Orleans music could get lost for hours.

When I heard that Cosimo had passed, I went back through the chronological lists at Cosimo Code and started pulling recordings out of my own archive as I saw them on the list, so that I could put together a representative (though hardly comprehensive) sampling of the records he helped birth.

These are exclusively 1960s recordings (mostly 1965-1967) with a couple of surprises (as in, I was surprised to see them on the list) and a few unusual things you might not normally find here at Funky16Corners. There’s a just a touch over an hour of solid 45s (and one LP track).

So, click on the link, give the old ones and zeros a spin, and head on over to the Cosimo Code and try to digest the mind-boggling breadth of Mr Matassa’s portfolio.

Condolences to those that knew him, and props to the CC crew for their amazing work.

Welcome to the 2014 edition of the Funky16Corners Allnighter/Pledge Drive.

This is the ninth annual Pledge Drive, and the fifth Allnighter.

If you haven’t experienced the Allnighter/Pledge Drive, it can be explained as thus: once a year, the Funky16Corners Blog, your home for the best in funk, soul, jazz and rare groove vinyl for almost 10 years comes to you with hand outstretched, asking for donations to offset the operating expenses of the web site.

The Funky16Corners ‘operation’ (as it is) included the Funky16Corners and Iron Leg blogs, the mix archives for both (containing well over 200 mixes), and the Funky16Corners Radio Show/Podcast (another 200+ files available for download, or through subscription in iTunes).

The money raised during the pledge drive goes to pay for the server space and fees associated with hosting the whole megillah.

As has been attested to many times in the past, Funky16Corners has humble beginnings, starting out on the old (free) Blogger service, moving to WordPress, and then to self-hosted WordPress. The move to paid hosting was necessitated by increased bandwidth usage, as well as the need for a place to store all the mixes (and eventually the radio show episodes).

The Allnighter/Pledge Drive is a once-yearly occurrence, in which yours truly, and some of the finest selectors out there whip up new mixes for your delectation.

In past years, I have posted all of the mixes in a single post, and left it up for a week.

This year, the quality and quantity of the mixes spurred me on to try something a little different, i.e. posting a new mix each weekday for a period of just over two weeks. This way, each selector gets their moment in the spotlight, and the mixes get spaced out so that the listeners don’t suffer from mix-fatigue.

Each day, you’ll get a fantastic mix (there really are some amazing ones this year) from one of my favorite DJs, many of whom have participated in the Allnighter before, as well as a couple of great new contributors.

So, if you dig what we do here at Funky16Corners, click on the Paypal link and toss some cash into the barrel.

Contributors will receive a 2014 Allnighter badge, as well as some stickers from the archive (as long as they last).

Greetings all

I hope the new week and the onset of spring (at last) finds you all well.

This Saturday I was very proud to participate in the opening party for the Dust & Grooves book (which I just happen to appear in, alongside over one hundred other wax wranglers).

The work of photographer Eilon Paz (with production coordination by may man Jamison Harvey, aka DJ Prestige of Fleamarket Funk), Dust & Grooves started out as a photo site, and over the years evolved into a book project that encompassed a world tour.

The party was held at the Powerhouse Arena in Brooklyn, NY, right underneath the Manhattan Bridge.

There was a listening party (Quincy Jones‘ ‘Walking In Space’), sets by 20 of the NY area’s finest DJs and even some live music.

If you haven’t seen the book, it is truly a thing to behold. A huge, beautifully designed and printed collection of photographs and interviews with people deep inside the vinyl culture, including DJs, collectors, historian/archivists, and label owners.

This post includes my set from the show (we were each allotted 10 minute sets, so I devoted mine to the sounds of Eddie Bo, just like my original photo set/interview on the Dust & Grooves site).

I’m also including some pics from the event (above).

I got to meet some Facebook friends in person, and made some new friends as well.

It was a real gas, and something I was very happy to be a part of.
