Jamison Harvey/DJ Prestige

Greetings all.

I come to you today with news of a fantastic new short documentary film about the mighty DJ Prestige.

DJ Prestige (better known to his friends as Jamison Harvey) was the founder of the storied Asbury Park 45 Sessions (where we first met) and the man behind Flea Market Funk.

Filmmaker Thomas Draudt has put together a documentary called ‘The Hustle Is Real’ about Prestige, and it came out this week.

The documentary, which has been screened at a number of film festivals and continues to make its way around the circuit is a look at the life of a working class DJ.

It features a great soundtrack (assembled by DJ Prestige) featuring Pat Van Dyke, Damu The Fudgemunk, The Gripsweats, The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, The Greasetraps, Misha Panfilov Combo, Saucy Lady, and The Soul Surfers.  There is an exclusive title track “The Hustle Is Real” from Turkish musician Alpman as well.

You can check out the film here.

So, big ups to Prestige, and make sure you check out the film.

I hope you dig it, and I’ll see you all next week.

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Keep the faith

Listen/Download – The Spellbinders – Chain Reaction MP3

Greetings all.

The Spellbinders – New Jersey’s own – have been featured in this space before with their epic 1967 floorfiller ‘Help Me (Get Myself Back Together Again)’.

The group made a string of outstanding singles for Columbia and Date between 1965 and 1967, all with the involvement of soul genius Van McCoy.

‘Chain Reaction’ from 1966 is a stellar midtempo number with echoes of the Miracles. As the song builds the group harmonies come in to fatten up the sound, which is – like many McCoy records – filled with hooks.

Interestingly, ‘Chain Reaction’ got released twice in the UK with a pair of b-sides, first on UK CBS with ‘For You’ on the flip and then again on Reaction with ‘Help Me’ on the flip, both in 1966.

Sadly, for a group with such a great sound and the assistance of Van McCoy, they onky had limited success, with ‘For You’ grazing the R&B Top 20 in 1965 and ‘Chain Reaction’, ‘We’re Acting Like Lovers’ and ‘Help Me’ scoring regional pop radio success.

The group broke up in 1967, with female lead Eloise Pennington moving on to join the Ad Libs.

I hope you dig the sounds, and I’ll see you all next week.

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Greetings all.

A while back, I put together an episode of the Funky16Corners Radio Show that focused on soul artists from NJ. When compiling that playlist, the sounds of Linda Jones were right at the top of the list.

Jones, a Newark native had a powerful, flexible voice, and in my opinion would have gone on to a long career were she not cut down at 28 by complications of diabetes.

Jones got her start singing with a family gospel group, recording her first secular 45s for labels like Cub, Blue Cat and Atco in the early 60s.

Producer George Kerr brought her to Loma Records in 1967, where she would record a string of singles and an absolutely essential album.

Today’s selection appeared on that album, and was the flip side of her first 45 for Loma. The A-side of the record, ‘Hypnotized’ was her biggest hit, making it into the R&B Top 5 and the Pop Top 20 in the summer of 1967.

That tune is a sweet soul gem, but in the 15 or so years since I first picked up the 45, I’ve come to prefer the upbeat, danceable B-side, ‘I Can’t Stop Lovin’ My Baby’.

The song has a very nice, mid-to-uptempo arrangement, with a solid bottom, and horn, tambourine and vibraphone accents that have endeared it to the Northern fans. Jones vocal soars effortlessly over a female backing chorus.

If you can manage to get your hands on the ‘Hypnotized’ album, do so, as it includes a lot of excellent material, including an extra-fast take on the Shirelles ‘Last Minute Miracle’ and the stunning ballad ‘Seeing Is Believing’.

After her tenure with Loma, Jones went on to record for Neptune and Turbo, where she would have a string of R&B Top 40 hits until her untimely passing in 1972.

Yet another great soul voice lost too soon…

I hope you dig the tune, and I’ll see you all on Friday.

Keep the faith

Greetings all.

Example

Make sure you check it out, and the other great shows in the Soul Guy Radio line-up as well.

______________________________________________________________________

The middle of the week is here, and in furtherance of getting us all over the hump and sliding downhill into the weekend, I thought I’d whip something sweet and upbeat on you.

The Shirelles are one of the more soulful giants of the girl group era, having recorded a grip of certified classics (‘Baby It’s You’ and ‘Boys’ both having been covered by the Beatles).

I featured the A-side of this particular 45, the epic, Northern Soul classic ‘Last Minute Miracle’ back in 2012.

Where as that tune is fairly hard-charging, with a spectacular, lifting chorus, today’s selection is a little bit more relaxed, with a slightly sweeter feel.

Written by Luther Dixon and Kenny Hollon and arranged by Richard Tee, ‘No Doubt About It’ is fast moving, with some great accents (especially where the piano and glockenspiel double each other), a pulsing bass line, well-applied horns and wonderful harmony vocals by the Shirelles.

Despite the fact that both sides of the 45 were excellent and filled with hooks, only ‘Last Minute Miracle’ got any airplay at all, and even then only in a few regional markets.

I hope you dig the tune, and I’ll see you all on Friday.

Keep the faith

Listen/Download – The Valtairs – The Ko Ko Mo MP3

Greetings all.

I have been a collector of local records for as long as I can remember, but despite the Jersey Shore’s long history, producing Bruce Springsteen among others, there isn’t a whole lot of vinyl out there.

My search for Shore area 45s began back in the mod/garage days of the mid-80s, when I first heard about local garage bands like the Inmates, the Storytellers, the Mods, and most importantly, the Motifs.

I make that qualification about the Motifs, because they were the first group I encountered on the Selsom label (leading me to today’s selections).

Formed by local musician/entrepreneur Norman Seldin (who had his own excellent group, The Soul Set), Selsom released a handful of great 45s by rock bands like the Motifs and the Jaywalkers, soul groups like the Valtairs, the Shondelles, and Tony Maples and the Naturals, and doowop by the Uniques (the group that would later evolve into the Broadways on MGM).

The Valtairs are an especially interesting case because their leader Harry Ray went on to success with the Moments and Ray, Goodman and Brown.

The Valtairs recorded two 45s for Selsom, ‘Soul!’ and today’s selection ‘The Ko Ko Mo’.

Featuring a solid lead by Ray, and some tight harmonies by the group (Gregory Henson, Kenneth Short and Joe Gardner) ‘The Ko Ko Mo’ is one of those records that seems to be sitting right on the cusp of R&B-morphing-into-soul with a decided East Coast sound.

‘Soul!’ is a fast moving tune with a live sound that bears the influence of the early Isley Brothers. Both of these 45s were recorded in 1964, and produced by Seldin. Though neither of them generated any heat outside of the Shore, their high quality, and the later success of Harry Ray show that Seldin had a real ear for talent.

Seldin put together a 2-CD comp of his various and sundry productions, including tracks by the Valtairs, the Uniques, Tony Maples, the Soul Set and many others, which you can get at CD Baby (https://www.cdbaby.com/cd/storminn).

I hope you dig the tracks, and I’ll see you on Wednesday.

Listen/Download – Jimmy Chandler – I Can’t Turn You Loose MP3

Greetings all.

The record I bring you today is one of those tunes that has a penumbra of information around it, i.e. plenty of circumstantial evidence as to its provenance, but very little that points to the identity of the band.

What I can tell you is that this track by the JC Band, appears on the flipside to a vocal by Jimmy Chandler, and appears on the Jersey City-based J-City label, any of which could hve provided the “JC”.

The record dates to sometime in the early 70s, and was written and produced by Paul Kyser and Tom Vetri, who worked with a bunch of acts out of Jersey City, NJ in the 60s and 70s, including the Nu Sound Express, Ltd., Jimmy Briscoe and the Little Beavers, the Ultimate Truth, Calender and Eight Miles High.

The J-City discography only runs for half a dozen 45s all in and around the same time period.

‘Jim Jam’ is a mid-tempo, funky instrumental with a tasty guitar lead, plenty of piano, bass and drums.

The flip sees Jimmy Chandler (another artist that didn’t leave much of a trail) laying down a nice version of Otis Redding’s ‘I Can’t Turn You Loose’, marred only by some weird, effects-laden guitar.

I hope you dig the track, and if any of you have any more info, please drop me a line.

See you all on Friday.

___________________________________________________

It is in that spirit that I relate to you a brief tale of father/son musical bonding, combined with just a touch of home team rooting.

Whilst out motoring some place or other, with the radio cranked to a suitable volume, who should pop up on the playlist but the mighty Kool and the Gang.

I took the opportunity to let my son know, that if he were ever asked to provide evidence of homegrown (New Jersey) musical greatness, he need go no further than Jersey City’s own, Kool and the Gang.

I have spoken in this space previously about how Kool and the Gang were the purveyors of some of the first funk I ever really dug (listening on the lunchroom record player back in the 5th grade in Milford Brook School, when I was the same age my son is now), with the big hits from 1973’s ‘Wild and Peaceful’, ‘Jungle Boogie’ and ‘Hollywood Swinging’ (which is what was playing on the car radio…).

Though they are best known to a younger audience for their smoother stuff (‘Joanna’) and the ne plus ultra of wedding staples ‘Celebration’, Kool and the Gang got their start as purveyors of straight up funk, with jazz on the side (good jazz, too).

They had their first R&B Top 40 hit in 1969 with the eponymous ‘Kool and the Gang’, but it would take six more stabs at the charts before they entered the R&B Top 10 with today’s selection, ‘Funky Stuff’ in 1973.

‘Funky Stuff’ is – like most of the best Kool ish – filled with blazing horns, thumping bass and drums (listen to the depth of the kick drum) and tasty guitar.

The record made it into the Pop Top 30, also a first for the group, which would blow the f*ck up with ‘Jungle Boogie’ in December of ’73, making it to Number 1 R&B and Number 4 Pop.

This is first-rate, hip-bumping party music, straight outta the Garden State.

So dig it, and I’ll see you all on Wednesday.

Keep the faith

Greetings all

I hope the new week and the onset of spring (at last) finds you all well.

This Saturday I was very proud to participate in the opening party for the Dust & Grooves book (which I just happen to appear in, alongside over one hundred other wax wranglers).

The work of photographer Eilon Paz (with production coordination by may man Jamison Harvey, aka DJ Prestige of Fleamarket Funk), Dust & Grooves started out as a photo site, and over the years evolved into a book project that encompassed a world tour.

The party was held at the Powerhouse Arena in Brooklyn, NY, right underneath the Manhattan Bridge.

There was a listening party (Quincy Jones‘ ‘Walking In Space’), sets by 20 of the NY area’s finest DJs and even some live music.

If you haven’t seen the book, it is truly a thing to behold. A huge, beautifully designed and printed collection of photographs and interviews with people deep inside the vinyl culture, including DJs, collectors, historian/archivists, and label owners.

This post includes my set from the show (we were each allotted 10 minute sets, so I devoted mine to the sounds of Eddie Bo, just like my original photo set/interview on the Dust & Grooves site).

I’m also including some pics from the event (above).

I got to meet some Facebook friends in person, and made some new friends as well.

It was a real gas, and something I was very happy to be a part of.

Dig it all, and I’ll see you on Wednesday.

Keep the faith

Greetings all

I hope you all dug my account of this week’s amazing Friars Club experience with the legendary David Porter.

What I am privileged to bring you today is the complete set spun that night by the mighty Connie T Empress.

For the few of you that won’t know her name, Connie T Empress was one of the founders of the legendary Empire State Soul Club. Starting in 1987 and lasting well into the 90s, Connie, along with W. Lee and Jeff the Chef spun the finest in rare soul for audiences all over New York City.

Example
The Empress feeling the groove!

Though I missed out on the ESSC experience, I was lucky enough to spin alongside Connie when she joined the ranks of the Asbury Park 45 Sessions back in 2007, spinning with our crew for a few years.

She is that rarest of soul DJ, in that she’s no mere trainspotter/collector, but rather a dyed in the wool fan who feels the music as much as the dancers on the floor (she’s usually moving and grooving behind the decks at the same time).

Her enthusiasm is obvious and contagious, and I always relish the opportunity to share the turntables with her. It never fails that I come away from one of her sets with a number of sides added to my want list, and this evening was no exception.

Example
ESSC Reunion: Connie T Empress and W. Lee!

What you get here is a little over an hour of solid senders, engineered for the dance floor, all groovy.

A brief technical note; as I mentioned with my set, there were some problems with the mixer, with some bleed through from channel to channel, but certainly not enough to keep such a tasty set under wraps. Fortunately, Connie did not experience the drop-out I did during my set, so you get this mix in stereo!

As always, I hope you dig it, and I’ll see you all on Monday.

Keep the faith

Larry

Nu Sound Express Ltd – I’ve Been Trying

Listen/Download Nu Sound Express Ltd – I’ve Been Trying

Greetings all

The tune I bring you today is both a very groovy cover, as well as a neglected b-side.

Back in the day, when I was first tracking and bagging soul and funk 45s, the Nu-Sound Express Ltd were one of the first big scores.

This is not to say that any of their records are big-money hustlas (to borrow a term from our insane friends) but rather that at the time, they were a group both obscure and excellent when my crates were not heavily burdened with same.

There isn’t a lot of information out there on the group, but what is available suggests that they were from New Jersey, and were associated with Jersey City impresario Paul Kyser.

Kyser had produced acts like Jimmy Briscoe and the Little Beavers, Sound Generation, the Super Disco Band, Calender and the band that Nu Sound Express would morph into a few years later, Rhyze.

Nu Sound Express Ltd recorded two cool 45s, both for the Silver Dollar label (at least one of which was issued in Europe – with a cool picture sleeve – on the Discophon label) in the early 70s.

The a-sides of their 45s, ‘Ain’t It Good Enough’ and ‘One More Time You All’ were both cool examples of uptempo early 70s funk (the second being a ‘sequel’ of sorts to the first).

The tune I bring you today is the flipside of ‘Ain’t It Good Enough’, and if you didn’t recognize the title, also a cover of the Impressions 1965 Top 40 R&B hit ‘I’ve Been Trying’.

It took me a few years to warm to this side, first and foremost because back then I wasn’t grooving to too many ballads, but also because it has a certain loose, almost lo-fi feel to it.

The impression I get is that Kyser blew most of the budget on the A-side, leaving the group with a much sparer palette with which to work.

What you get is a touch of street corner harmony, with a spoken intro and low key instrumental backing (with a slightly out of tune piano). The cool thing is that the singing is very nice indeed, with a refreshing lack of slickness that sets it apart from almost everything else that was happening at the time.

‘I’ve Been Trying’ is a throwback to an earlier time and an interesting contrast to the funk of its flip.

I hope you dig it, and I’ll see you on Friday.

Keep the faith

Larry

Listen/Download Frankie Valli – (You’re Gonna) Hurt Yourself

Greetings all

If you were surprised when you showed up at Funky16Corners and saw Frankie Valli’s mug staring back at you, you really oughtn’t to have, since he popped up here with the Four Seasons and the mighty ‘Beggin’ a few years back.

The tune I bring you today is for a variety of reasons a big favorite of mine, but mainly because it was hiding in my crates for years before I discovered it.

Way, waayyy back, many a year ago, I picked up the 45 containing this gem because I had been informed that it had an organ instrumental on it called ‘Night Hawk’, credited to the Valli Boys.

As organ instrumentals go, it was kind of uninspiring (groovy, but light years outside of the ‘hammond burner’ belt), which is why it went into the crates and gathered dust for a few years.

So, as I entered one of those stretches where outside record digging is precluded due to lack of funds or free time, I pulled out a bunch of record boxes and started doing a little bit of internal re-digging, i.e. looking for things unjustly ignored the first time around, a method by which many, many interesting records have made their way onto the blog.

I pulled out a stack of 45s, went through them, and managed to harvest a grip of excellent stuff, including some instrumentals, ballads, and a couple of stellar examples of Northern Soul, of which today’s selection was one.

‘(You’re Gonna) Hurt Yourself’ was released in 1966, and eventually included on the LP “The Four Seasons Present Frankie Valli Solo” which compiled many of his previous solo 45s (including the original version of ‘The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore’) as well as new material like the huge hit ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You’.

Ironically, ‘(You’re Gonna) Hurt Yourself’ isn’t even considered the big Northern Soul cut off of that album, that honor being reserved for ‘You’re Ready Now’ which is at #96 in Kev Roberts’ ‘Northern Soul Top 500’ and actually charted in the UK in 1970 due to its popularity on the dance floors over there.

It is my humble opinion that ‘(You’re Gonna) Hurt Yourself’ is the superior record.

Written by Bob Crewe and Charlie Calello, ‘(You’re Gonna) Hurt Yourself’ features plenty of hooks, a stylish arrangement (listen closely for the electric piano bubbling under everything) and a great beat for the dance floor.

Valli’s vocal is excellent, staying away from his famous falsetto and settling into a style no doubt engineered to separate his solo work from the Four Season’s records.

I whipped this one on the folks at Subway Soul a few years back, and it was met with great pleasure by the dancers there.

It’s a great record and as our friends on the other side of the Atlantic say, ought to be cheap as chips.

I hope you dig it, and I’ll be back on Friday.

Keep the faith

Larry
