Greetings all.

What you see before you is one of the mixes I did for the 2016 Funky16Corners Allnighter/Pledge Drive.

‘Queens’ has long been a fave of mine, and a few weeks back, while using it as the pre-show for the Funky16Corners Radio Show, I was digging it so much that I thought it deserved a re-posting.

So here it is, just about an hour of the finest female 45s, mostly in a Northern bag but with just a touch of funky soul, and album tracks in my crates.

So pull down the ones and zeros and give it a spin.

I hope you dig it.

See you all next week.

Also, make sure to follow Funky16Corners on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

Keep the faith

Greetings all

Just when you thought you were out, they pulled you back in again!

What you see before you today is a very special bonus mix in this year’s Funky16Corners 2016 Allnighter/Pledge Drive.

Back a few months ago, when I was just getting things organized for this year’s event, I started out by putting together one funk mix, and one Northern Soul mix.

Then, taken by inspirado, I decided to slide the funky mix to the side and make two, related Northern mixes, which is what I ended up posting.

So, last week, as the Allnighter was winding up, I thought, ‘Hey…why not go ahead and post that funky mix?”

I’d been listening to it a lot in the car, and thought you folks might want to hear it to,

So, in furtherance of the idea that a tasty mix should be served when ripe, I bring you ‘Groove In’, in which we try to balance on that narrow ledge where soul was morphing into funk, with a few detours into out-and-out funk 45 action.

There are a lot of cool records in this one, and I hope you dig it.

I’ll be back later in the week with a return to routine posting.

Greetings all

Welcome to the wrap-up of the Funky16Corners 2016 Allnighter/Pledge Drive

We haven’t quite met our goal for 2016, so I’ve put together this recap/wrapup of the Allnighter with links to all of the mixes/pages for the last few weeks so you could see them all in one place, and pick up any that you might have mixed.

This page will stay up until the end of the week, and if you dig what we do here (the Funky16Corners Radio Show, mix archives and all of the same over at our sister blog, Iron Leg)  but haven’t donated, please consider clicking on the Paypal button and tossing something into that hat to help make the 2016 operating budget.

Everyone that donates will receive the new 2016 sticker and badge (see below, as well as any other swag we have remaining) and will be entered into the drawing for the groovy new 45 by the M-Tet.

I’ll be back on Monday with another, brand new BONUS mix of funk and soul, so stay tuned for that!

It is all greatly appreciated!

Greetings all

Welcome back to the Funky16Corners 2016, Allnighter/Pledge Drive.

Today’s sets in the Allnighter comes from DJs RP and Trueskillz of Funkdefy Ohio!

RP was here last year, and this time out he brings us a two-part live set recorded with Funkdefy guest selector DJ Trueskillz.

A few words from Brian “Preacher Man” Hannan (DJ RP): Funkdefy has been grooving it in Columbus since 2004, making it the longest running all vinyl Funk-n-Soul party in Central Ohio.  Although I am one of the founders of this event, there is no possible way I can take credit for what we do.  I have always had the humble pleasure of spinning with incredible DJs for all these years.  Regardless if they were a one time guest, or a regular staple of the shindig, it was these DJs that created the collective sound we have been known for.  Funkdefy is not just an ensemble group of crate diggers and DJs, they are my friends and family.  This year I am honored to share with you long time Funkdefy member DJ Trueskillz.  He has been in the DJ scene for a long time and has a record collection that is mind boggling. You may have met him before at some of the big records shows trading and collecting. He is the only person I know that has a turntable for a nightstand.  We recorded our last shindig live and this is an excerpt of that night. We hope you enjoy the grooves. Get with us on Facebook and we hope you will become part of, and a friend of, the funky collective.

Don’t forget to click the Paypal button and donate, and we’ll be back on Monday with one last mix, part two (Queens) of Funky16Corners contribution to this year’s Allnighter!

Greetings all

Welcome back to the Funky16Corners 2016, Allnighter/Pledge Drive.

Today’s set in the Allnighter comes from my man Tarik Thornton.

Tarik, who has deep roots in NOLA but now spends his time in the frosty north country has created a very, very special set for us this year.

Though the all-encompassing vibe is mellow, the mix covers the bases from gospel, to deep soul, to firme rolas, with some slightly familiar things alongside heavy obscurities from his crates.

This is a nighttime thing, so turn the lights down low, turn the volume up and open your ears (and your heart).

Don’t forget to click the Paypal button and donate, and we’ll be back tomorrow with a two-part mix from DJ RP of Funkdefy Ohio!

Greetings all

Welcome back to the Funky16Corners 2016, Allnighter/Pledge Drive.

Today I have the great pleasure of bringing you a very special mix from Chris Lujan, of the mighty M-Tet and the Dirty Dirty Podcast.

Chris has put together a very cool mix of Adrian Younge instrumentals.

A word from Chris:

“It is of my opinion that Adrian Younge will go down as one of the great American composers. Here we have my Dirty Dirty Podcast’s take on Adrian Younge (the instrumentals) for Larry Grogan’s Funky16Corners. Heavy on the deep soul/Italian horror/Ennio Morricone influence.

As far as the public knows, Adrian Younge got his start doing the soundtrack to the independent, modern, blaxploitation, comedy-action film, Black Dynamite. He was also tasked with editing the film.
After that, his band, the Black Dynamite Sound Orchestra, started playing out and doing some small tours. They have since been renamed Venice Dawn and have two albums out under that name.
He has also worked with some elite hip-hop acts, releasing two albums with Wu-Tang’s Ghost-Face Killa and an album with the Bay Area group, Souls Of Mischief. Also, he has an album out with William Hart of The Delfonics.
All of those albums (minus The Delfonics record) have also been issued in their instrumental forms. I’ve compiled what I believe to be the best of those and believe that they stand as instrumentals just as well, if not better, than their vocal alternates.
Dig!”

Don’t forget to click the Paypal button and donate, and we’ll be back tomorrow with a brand new mix from Tarik Thornton!

Greetings all

Welcome back to the Funky16Corners 2016, Allnighter/Pledge Drive.

We start the week with a very special ‘double header’ from the man behind Fufu Stew, Vincent the Soul Chef.

Vincent has been digging, spinning and blogging for a long time. He has excellent taste and instincts about what kind of sounds blend together (and not just in the realm of soul and funk) and the two mixes he brings us today, the Warmup and the Windup are testaments to that fact.

Make sure to set aside a block of time to take these in together because they are more than worth the effort.

And now, a word from the Chef:

“As always, I am honoured… enough said. Now although it was close to ten years ago, I still vividly recall that day in November when I warmed up the revelers at the world famous Asbury Park Lanes, so suffice it to say, I went there again in my mind and on my turntables with this batch of 45s. After a few repeated listens however, and a few trips through the boxes, it mushroomed into a much bigger undertaking, so much so that I had to make TWO batches. Yup. Enjoy.”

Don’t forget to click the Paypal button and donate, and we’ll be back tomorrow with a brand new mix from the founder of the Asbury Park 45 Sessions and the man behind Fleamarket Funk, the mighty DJ Prestige!

Next week we’ll be seeeing mixes from Vincent the Soul Chef, DJ Prestige, Chris Lujan, Tarik Thornton and DJ RP of Funkdefy!

Greetings all

Welcome back to the Funky16Corners 2016 Allnighter/Pledge Drive.

Today I bring you a tasty new mix from my man the HeavySoulBrutha!

Dave has dipped into his crates for a sequel to his mix from last year.

I’ll let him tell you about it:

“It’s such an incredible honor to be a part of the 2016 Funky16Corners Pledge Drive. It’s only proper that my mix contains all 45’s, as this was the spot that I first landed on when I became fascinated by those 2 sided gems. It was visiting HERE that expanded my knowledge and vocabulary. It was visiting HERE caused me to very quickly start to filling up my “wants list.” It was visiting HERE that I connected with other like minded & superbly cool music lovers around the world. IT IS HERE that I continue to discover incredible music. I don’t know when or where Larry’s record collection ends, but I hope it never does!!!

This is my sequel to last year’s mix, appropriately titled, “Another…” I hope you DIG, and please hit the donate button and help support this fantastic place.

Peace and SOUL… DaveB. aka HeavySoulBrutha (www.mixcloud.com/HeavySoulBrutha)

Thanks, HSB!

Don’t forget to click the Paypal button and donate, and we’ll be back tomorrow with a new mix from DJ Bluewater!

Greetings all

Welcome back to the Funky16Corners 2016 Allnighter/Pledge Drive.

Today we have a very groovy set from my man Ben Gibson, of Mo’Soul and the fabulous Hit Git and Split night over in the UK.

Ben has put together an interesting selection of soul and funk, moving from the old school to the new.

A word from Ben:

“As always it’s a huge pleasure to contribute to Larry’s consistently excellent Funky 16 Corners. As I’m sure you’ll all agree his hard work keeping up the site is hugely appreciated and I urge you to support this great spot however you feel you can!”

Thanks, Ben!

Don’t forget to click the Paypal button and donate, and we’ll be back tomorrow with a new mix from HeavySoulBrutha Dave B!
