Greetings all

This is an extra special, unscheduled, surprise post, tied in with my chronic inability to be prepared for any special occasion on the calendar.

To be sure, this situation has improved over the years, as I’ve built up a massive store of music, pictures and information that make these things easier.

Unfortunately, my mind is – to borrow a phrase from the autobiography of the great Dave Van Ronk – like the attic of the Smithsonian, and sometimes no matter how special something is, it gets filed, misplaced or forgotten.

I mention this because I finally remembered – at the last possible minute, naturally – to dig out and digimatize the record you see before you today.

Back in 1968, not long after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Chris Kenner, his hitmaking days long behind him, wrote and waxed a tribute to the great civil rights leader.

Entitled ‘Memories of a King (Let Freedom Ring) Pts 1&2’, it is a departure for Kenner, best known for penning and recording some of the greatest R&B to come out of New Orleans in the 1960s, as well as laying down some of the most obviously inebriated records I’ve ever heard.

That said, ‘Memories of King’ is an earnest and heartfelt, and at times the tiniest bit funky, tribute to Dr. King.

While it’s nothing earth shattering, it is a little known/heard 45, and was the second to last 45 Kenner recorded before he was sent to jail later that year. It was the beginning of a downhill slide that ended in his premature death in 1976.

Give it a listen, and remember the work and life of the mighty Dr. King.

Listen/Download The Chitlins – Sugar Woman

Greetings all

Welcome to the middle of another groovy week.

The track I bring you today is both a fairly recent discovery for me and a major fave.

It is also something of a mystery.

A few months back I was perusing a new (to me) record site on the intertubes, and a glimpse of the Pala records label caught my eye.

One half of the York-Pala construct, it was run by two cats named Charlie Greene and Brian Stone. These operators are best known as music managers who came to prominence in mid-60s LA working with acts like Sonny and Cher, the Buffalo Springfield, the Poor and a cat you may have heard of named Dr John.

I had always seen the York/Pala credit on many records, but it was only in the last few years that I actually found a record on either label.

I have two 45s by The Poor (LA-based folk rock) but the Chitlins ‘Sugar Woman’ was the first Pala disc I’d ever encountered.

The label appears to have been very short-lived, with only one other release (by Larry Marks).

The Chitlins appear to have gotten their start – and spent much of their existence – as a white show band called the Soul Brothers, in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

The first time I heard ‘Sugar Woman’, what grabbed me was the New Orleans guitar (sounds like George Davis to me).

As it turns out the band did in fact record their sole 45 in New Orleans for Stanley Chaisson’s Chase Records imprint.

I have not been able to confirm whether or not there was actually a Chitlins 45 released on Chase, or if it was a production deal that was licensed to Pala.

My suspicion – without any hard evidence, mind you – is that Green and Stone happened upon the Chitlins via one of the many New Orleans connections in their orbit. Harold Battiste was Sonny and Cher’s musical director, and both Mac ‘Dr John’ Rebennack and Alvin Robinson were both working on the West Coast during this period.

That said, ‘Sugar Woman’ is a positively scorching bit of garagey soul with fantastic lyrics like

Let her know she’s a real Jim Dandy, feed her candy!

And

Let her know she’s a ring-dang-doo sir, don’t lose her!

The guitar, bass and drums are in a deep, deep groove, and the horns and backing vocalists are spot on.

I don’t know who the lead vocalist is but he’s killing it!

Via some cross-referencing (and following a few hunches) I’m led to believe that the band included guys named Chris Miller, Sam Roe, Pete Killingsworth, Sonny Tanner, having had some crossover with a group called the New Grooves.

As I mentioned earlier, I hear the distinct guitar stylings of George Davis, but the entire record has such a New Orleans feel to it, I wouldn’t be surprised to discover that this was the Soul Brothers/Chitlins singer fronting an entire studio full of NOLA pros.

In another interesting twist, the song is credited to country songwriter/producer Billy Sherrill, but I can’t find any instance of anyone else having recorded the tune.

The flip side, ‘The Next Time You See Me’ is an upbeat, bluesy shuffle.

“Sugar Woman’ was a local Top 40 hit in New Orleans in the Spring of 1967.

It is a truly remarkable tune, and one that I wish I’d had in my crates a long time ago.

I hope you dig it as much as I do, and I’ll see you all on Friday.

Listen/Download Art Neville – Bo Diddley Pt1

Greetings all

I hope the day finds you well.

The tune I bring you today is a storming bit of funky, Crescent City soul from one of that burgs leading lights.

Art Neville has been waxing groovy music for almost 60 years (?!?), starting with the Hawketts ‘Mardi Gras Mambo’ in 1954, recording a number of solo singles for a variety of New Orleans labels (Specialty, Instant, Cinderella and Sansu) before co-founding the mighty Meters.

Though he found himself behind the keys in the Meters, he was no slouch in the vocal department. His excellent Eddie Bo written/produced ‘Hook Line and Sinker’ from 1966 is a lost classic, as is the tune I bring you today.

Neville recorded two 45s for Sansu, both in 1968, right near the end of that label’s first incarnation.

The tune I bring you today was the first of those, his raucous reworking of Bo Diddley’s epic, 1955 debut, ‘Bo Diddley’.

Interestingly enough, Art dispenses with the standard Bo Diddley beat (it’s in there, sort of, but sped way up). Backed by the guys that would shortly become the Meters, he rips through the tune, skirting the edges of funk like a Second Line on fast-forward.

The arrangement is credited to Allen Toussaint. As wild as this 45 is, considering the flights of rhythmic imagination the Meters would soon embark on, they (especially Zig) almost seem restrained.

Nevilles follow up 45 (and his last for Sansu) has an even more traditional bent, with a cover of Raymond Lewis’s old-school NOLA classic ‘I’m Gonna Put Some Hurt On You’.

It is a groovy 45, and especially interesting considering that the Meters would blast off a year later.

Listen/Download The Phinxs – Street Jam Pts 1&2

Welcome to yet another week in the ongoing saga of wax (and wane).

The record I bring you today is something that has been simmering in my New Orleans crates for years, waiting for just the right opportunity to reveal its charms.

Back in the day, when my collection wasn’t quite as healthy as it is now I often cast my dragnet wide, seeing what I might dredge up by focusing on entire labels, cities etc.

As my record room can attest today, this method was especially fruitful in regard to both Philadelphia and the great city of New Orleans.

I had already gotten my hands on Eddie Bo’s ‘Hook and Sling’ and kept my eyes peeled for anything else that might turn up on the Scram label, named for its owner, seafood entrepreneur Al Scramuzza.

Over the years, I managed to find the good (Sonny Jones ‘Sissy Walk’) and the not so good (Ray Brackens ‘Do the Crawfish’), but the Phinxs ‘Street Jam’ was one of the most perplexing.

Basically a keyboard driven (piano and organ) R&B instro, with some horns, ‘Street Jam’ seems less like a stab at the charts than a representation of a tried and true stage jam committed to vinyl.

I have never been able to discover anything about the Phinxs (I’m assuming that the name was pronounced like ‘Finks’), other than the fact that ‘Street Jam’ was released in 1965 (only the second 45 on Scram) and the the band went on later that year to back singer Richie Matta on his 45 for the label.

If anyone has the skinny on the Phinxs, please drop me a line.

Greetings all.

Welcome to the 2013 Funky16Corners Allnighter and Pledge Drive.

Those of you that fall by F16C on the reg will already be familiar with our yearly do, in which I ask some of the finest selectors I know to dip into their crates and put together mixes (from a wide variety of styles, but always soulful) for your listening pleasure.

This being the interwebs, with the selectors coming to you from points all over the map (NJ, New Zealand, NY, UK, Ohio, Minnesota), and all of you good people spread even further afield, we get together for this virtual “Allnighter” (in the tradition of the great soul clubs the world over) once a year.

There are two basic reasons for this, both equally important.

First and foremost, we try to raise some dough (via Paypal donation, see links below) to fund the server costs associated with keeping Funky16Corners (and Iron Leg) up and running. This includes the regular, thrice-weekly blog posts, as well as the Podcast, Soul Club, Guest Mix and Radio Show Archives (collectively holding well over 200 mixes of all kinds).

Second, is of course the fact that music – to paraphrase Willie the Shake – is the food of life, and so we assemble here to play on.

Blogging is for many – creators and readers alike – a transitory thing, but for the selectors here, and for many of the people that stop by here on a regular basis, music, especially soul, funk and jazz is life. These are no mere “collectors’. The mix-makers that you see here (and in all the previous years) have devoted a tremendous amount of time (not to mention,resources) to studying the sounds you will soon hear pouring out of your speakers.

Just the other day I saw someone bemoaning the overuse of the word “curating”, but I assure you that it applies to the work of every one of the people involved in this enterprise.

We all collect these sounds because we love them, but we have also all spent time sharing them, on blogs, and more importantly in live venues because we want to spread the word.

When I approach my fellow DJs to put together mixes for the Allnighter, I do so with complete confidence that they will select to impress, and impress they have.

What you here is roughly eight-and-a-half hours (in nine mixes) of the finest in funk, soul, latin, rocksteady, blues, disco, and Northern, put together by some of the best in the biz.

Funky16Corners is – and always has been – a not-for-profit enterprise. I have never taken ads here at the site and hopefully never will.

What I ask, is that if you dig what we do here, and you have the resources to do so, please throw a couple of bucks our way to keep the machine running for another year.

For the most part, these 45s represent a lot of the future of Funk, Soul, and who will be carrying on the torch of funky music in general in the years to come playing right along side a few older tracks that lend themselves nicely to this mix. Record labels like Colemine, who offer up The Jive Turkeys, Kept, who give us the Afro Beat of Hard Proof out of Austin, TX, The DT6 on Starla coming out of Scotland, Big Pimp Jones from Philly on Recordbreakin’, Our Records Label and Sir Ali Bengal out of Germany, and Quantic out of the UK represent a small amount of artists doing it like they did in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Some of these limited edition 7″s will be the sought after 45s in years to come. They’re recorded in the same manner as the originators, and each band lends it unique sound to the time line of music. I’ve also included some older sides such as Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes, a Disco Soul cover of “Sunny” by Yambu, a Latin influenced Donnie Hathaway cover from Victor Green, some Psychedelic Library Hammond Funk from Studio G’s Beat Group, as well as some West Coast Lowrider Soul with East L.A. FUNKDEFY, located in Columbus Ohio, is the longest running Funk-N-Soul dance party of Central Ohio. Founded in 2004, the Crew is an ensemble group of crate diggers and beat battlers. Eldridge Holmes is a name that most people outside of old-time New Orleans residents and record collectors will fail to recognize.

This is a shame because Holmes (in partnership with songwriter/producer/arranger Allen Toussaint) made some of the most memorable funk and soul sides to come out of the Crescent City in the 60’s.

‘A Love Problem’ was released in 1967 as the flip side to his cover of Lee Dorsey’s ‘Working In A Coal Mine’ (not one of Holmes’ best records and an otherwise unnecessary remake). It’s a slow ballad, highlighted throughout by Toussaint’s piano.

Holmes, best known for his storming funk sides like ‘Pop Popcorn Children’ and ‘The Book’ was a great soul shouter, but for a glimpse of the truly sublime, one needs to check out his ballad performances.

Opening with a horn section (featuring a decidedly uncharacteristic muted trumpet) and settling into a slow tempo ‘A Love Problem’ sees Holmes addressing his woman, who’s parents think they’re too young to be in love. Unfolding like some French Quarter Romeo and Juliet story (ending short of the twin suicides of the Bard), Holmes pleading vocal is one of the finest examples of Southern soul balladry from the era.

He manages to move from an almost conversational tone to moments when his voice soars over the rest of the song. As earthy and soulful as it is, the arrangement at times takes on a kind of “prettiness”, especially when Toussaint lays in piano accents alongside Holmes’ voice.

Together (along with the anonymous musicians and background singers) Holmes and Toussaint managed to create something of great beauty (something they did again the following year with Holmes spellbinding cover of Tim Hardin’s ‘If I Were A Carpenter’).

One of the things you hope for when listening to good (dare I say great) music, are those moments when all the elements (writers, performers, lyrics) that make up the little three and a half minute dramas blend into something transcendent.

One of those moments comes at the beginning of the second verse where Holmes sings (in a pas de deux with Toussaint’s bluesy piano):

‘Something tells me, your Mom and your Daddy they don’t like me. But what they fail to realize baby, is whatever will be will be.’

Holmes becomes the boy in the song. The listener gets the feeling that this isn’t just another poetic anthem to heartbreak but a brief window into someone else’s pained memories. The fact that Holmes himself wrote this song (his collaboration with Toussaint was fairly unusual in that he composed many of the songs they recorded together) suggests that pure autobiography is a possibility.

On the other hand, I like to think that a truly great singer is an actor of a sort – bringing the story in a song to life with their performance – and even though Holmes may be “method acting” in bringing to life his own memories in the composition and performance of ‘A Love Problem’, he does so in a way that is supremely evocative.

For a brief moment he makes the listener forget that they are witnessing an artistic conceit, and instead appear to be privy to a real confession, as if you were sitting next to Holmes on a New Orleans bar stool listening to his tale of woe.

Whether or not this record effects you as deeply as it does me, it deserves a listen (or four or five), if only to bring back to life this great, but largely forgotten performer.

Listen/Download Gentleman June Gardner – It’s Gonna Rain

Greetings all

I come to you from deep inside the storm, as Hurricane/Tropical Storm/Whatever Sandy beats down upon us with buckets of rain and howling winds (which are guaranteed to get a lot more howly as the day progresses).

I figured I ought to get up off of the couch and blog something before the electricity goes bye bye.

I was rifling through the stacks looking for my copy of Dave Baby Cortez’s ‘Hurricane’ (which I found, and just reposted, so get it while it’s hot) but happened upon the record you see before you first.

It was as of the hand of fate took a second out of its busy day to offer up one of the all time great soul instrumentals.

‘It’s Gonna Rain’ by Gentleman June Gardner is right up there in my Top 10 instrumental soul 45s. In fact I was shocked that’s I’d never blogged it before!

I first heard it many years ago on an old Charly comp of New Orleans soul.

The record you see before you was the first copy of the song I got on wax. Oddly enough in an Australian pressing of Gentleman June’s LP (released on Emarcy here in the US).

I have since then grabbed the US LP and 45 (can’t have to many copies of a great record!), but I keep wondering how this record got released in Australia (I liken it to the NZ pressing of the 13th Floor Elevators ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’).

Gardner was a New Orleans based drummer and bandleader who recorded great music inside and outside that city (he also worked with the mighty Sam Cooke).

The extra groovy thing about this one – which I didn’t discover until I’d had it for a few years – is that it is a cover of a tune by Sonny and Cher!

The OG, which was released on the flip-side of ‘I Got You Babe’ is a garage-au-go-go cruncher and probably the most surprising thing in the S&C discography.

Though I don’t know this for sure, my suspicion has long been that Gardner was hepped to the tune by his NOLA homeboy Harold Battiste, who was working out on the coast as musical director for Mr. & Mrs. Bono.

‘It’s Gonna Rain’ is a certified soul stomper that’ll have you out of your seat and twisting before you know it.

It’s the perfect antidote to this bitch of a storm that’s sitting on top of us right now (and promises to get a lot worse before it’s over).

Keep your fingers crossed that those of us on the Eastern seaboard make it through Sandy in one piece (or at least as few pieces as possible).

Listen/Download Nicky and the Magnificents – Pasame el Hacha

Greetings all.

Welcome to the end of another week here at the Corners.

I should remind you all that the Funky16Corners Radio Show hits the airwaves of the intertubes this and every Friday night at 9PM on Viva Radio. You can also pick up an MP3 of each week’s show on Saturday, either via iTunes as a podcast, or as a straight download over at the blog.

The tune I bring you today is an example of one of the oddest mysteries in the world of 45s (at least as far as I’m concerned).

It was some years back, during one of the Asbury Park 45 Sessions that my man Jack the Ripper dropped the needle on a tune that had me running up to the decks as fast as my legs would carry me.

While it didn’t grab me immediately, after about 15 seconds it was obvious to me that I was hearing a cover version of Roger and the Gypsies ‘Pass the Hatchet’.

Thing was, I had no idea that the song had ever been covered, and so the story begins.

The version he played that night, is the same one you see before you today, by a South American band by the name of Nicky and the Magnificents.

It would be years before I’d manage to score my own copy, but by then things had become even more curious.

I have gone on the record several times – in this space and elsewhere – that the OG version of ‘Pass the Hatchet’ is probably my favorite record of all time.

As far as I knew, it was probably little-heard outside of the New Orleans region when it was first released.

What I didn’t know until I was much deeper into the game, was that the Roger and the Gypsies 45 was issued again in South America in 1970, where, if bits and pieces of internet chatter are to be believed, it was a localized “hit” of some kind.

This would go a long way in explaining why ‘Pass the Hatchet’ was covered at least twice by South American groups, first by El Comite on the the Microfon label, and then later by Nicky and the Magnificents.

Though I haven’t been able to find out anything about either group, the sound of the records give up a hint or two.

The El Comite version (which seems to be Colombian Argentinian*) is closer in sound to the original recording, and seems to date somewhat closer to the 1970 SA issue of the Roger and the Gypsies 45.

Nicky and the Magnificents, in which the pressing of the record, if not the band itself hails from Argentina, dates to 1977 and sounds like it too.

If I had to venture a guess (especially factoring in the sound of the flipside, an upbeat cover of the Human Beinz ‘Nobody But Me’, en Espanol, natch) I would think that Nicky and the Magnificents were something more along the lines of a New Wave/Power Pop band.

The synthesizers and the flanged guitar, as well as a somewhat more laid back feel (my inclination would be to pitch it up +5 if I were playing it out) have a much later sound.

Either way, it’s fascinating to me that a record out of the Southern US, which was never a hit of any kind, managed to get released a few years after the fact in South America, and then get covered at least twice.

If anyone with deeper South American crates/knowledge has any more info to flesh out this saga, I’d love to hear it.

Greetings all.

Welcome to the third annual Funky16Corners Pledge Drive/Allnighter!

Though we’ve been doing the Pledge Drive thing since2006, the Allnighter concept first rolled out in 2010, with several hours of mixes by some of the finest selectors I know.

This year we have most of the usual suspects, including several Asbury Park 45 Sessions alumni, as well as my man Tony C from the UK and Tarik Thornton.

The sounds run the gamut of classic soul, funk, reggae, rock steady, old school Hammond 45s and all connective points in between.

If you read the blog on the reg you already know that the past year has been an exceptionally challenging one here.
It wouldn’t be reaching to state that keeping Funky16Corners (and Iron Leg) up and running had a lot to do with maintaining my sanity over the last eight months.

There’s something to be said for keeping a small island of creative stability afloat during a crisis, and that’s what the blog has been.

Much of that has – as always – come from the interchange with the readers, listeners, fellow vinyl travelers, and DJs. Your contributions, whether informational, conversational, sometimes monetary or sometimes all of the above, have kept Funky16Corners rolling along.

This November will mark the 8th anniversary of the blog (something akin to 800 internet years!) and creating and running the blog has become a big part of my life. Through it I’ve learned a great deal, met many incredibly cool people and gotten to DJ in many, many cool places.

The Pledge Drive aspect of this yearly event is an important one.

Funky16Corners – all of the text, graphics and sound files – resides on paid server space, a bill that comes due around this time every year. Your donations help pay for that.

Blogging has always been an ephemeral pursuit, partly because not everyone has the interest in keeping one going for very long, but also because it rarely rises above the level of a casual pursuit for most people. They start a blog, post most files temporarily and depart as soon as their interest wanes.

Funky16Corners may very well have gone the way of most blogs (I don’t know the actual percentage of music blogs that last more than a year, but anecdotally I’d guess that it’s below 10%) but after getting it rolling (with a slightly different format) in 2004, and changing platforms twice (finally ending up with the self-hosting WordPress model) I think we have at long last settled into lasting form.

The basic format of how I communicate with the audience through the blog has always remained fairly constant, with a pictures and labels (what the vinyl nerds of the world know as record porn) and some written context to tie it all together.

Along the way, the Funky16Corners Radio Podcast mixes worked their way into the flow, then the actual Funky16Corners Radio Show (Friday nights at 9PM on Viva Radio and then archived here) and then in 2010 the Funky16Corners Soul Club/Allnighters so I could present mixes by other selectors.

What we have now, in the middle of 2012 is –including this year’s Allnighter mixes – close to 150 mixes and another 110 episodes of the radio show on-line for your (and my) listening pleasure.

And my friends, pleasure is what it’s all about; the pleasure that great music, some rare, some not so rare, can bring to those willing to open their ears.

That’s why I do it, and as always, I hope you dig it.

Greetings all.

I hope you all are well.

I had some other things planned for today, then while I was out running errands I drove past a church with a sign up about Ash Wednesday, which meant only one thing to my deeply lapsed, heathen, ex-Catholic self (I’m so far gone I usually don’t catch on until I see people walking around with ashes on their foreheads), that being that Mardi Gras was at hand.

Despite my obvious affinity for and devotion to the music of New Orleans, for some reason I have a fairly consistent mental block when it comes to remembering Mardi Gras.

It seems that every single year it comes into my sightline either on the day of or after and I end up sitting here like a schmo wondering why I couldn’t get it together to commemorate that most significant of New Orleans-based festivities.

Fortunately, this year fate stepped in, I saw that sign and mixed you up a nice, spicy bowl of New Orleans funk and soul gumbo.

I don’t think there’s anything in this mix that hasn’t appeared in this space at least once over the years, but that shouldn’t stop you from digging in.

There are a few Mardi Gras-specific numbers here, including the record that gives the mix it’s title by Bobby Williams, the mighty Professor Longhair and ‘Big Chief’, the Dixie Cups and their Mardi Gras Indian chant Two Way Poc A Way’ and Earl King’s ‘Street Parade’.

There are also a grip of drum-heavy, NOLA party burners as well, powerful enough to get you up out of your seat and on to the floor.

I hope you dig the sounds and I’ll be back on Wednesday with something cool.
