Greetings all.

I hope everyone (at least those of you in the northeast) are riding the storm out, whether you’re soaked and windblown (like us here at the Jersey Shore) or buried under the snow like everyone to the north and west of us is.

I have something very special for you this (not so) fine day.

Last week – as has become something of a tradition every March 8th – I reposted the Funky16Corners Bold Soul Sisters mix for International Women’s Day. That mix, first posted back in 2006 is a longtime fave and packed from end to end with funky burners from the ladies.

As I reposted it last week it occurred to me that I ought to put together  sequel, and I set down to gather together the best funk and funky soul stuff that I had gathered in the eleven years since the first mix.

There was soo much groovy stuff, that I decided to to two new mixes (cleverly titled Bold Soul Sisters 2 & 3), one of straight up funk and one with the funk quotient dialed down a bit (but not too far).

I’ll be running Part 2 today, and Part 3 next week.

It is (with three exceptions) an all-45 mix, and aside from a couple of bigger names, I think you’ll find that a lot of this is probably new to you.

So dig in, pull down the ones and zeroes and – of course – get funky.

Greetings all.

The end of the week is upon us, so I will remind you once again to dig into this week’s Funky16Corners Radio Show podcast. The show drops each and every Friday and can be had by subscribing to it as a podcast in iTunes, listening on your mobile device via the TuneIn app, on Mixcloud, or as an MP3 right here at the blog.

There also may be some positive news in regard to a new internet radio home for the show, so stay tuned for details!

We end the week with one of my all time favorite slices of funky disco, that I have been a fan of since its original release back in 1973.

I can state unequivocally that I first heard Eddie Kendricks’ mighty ‘Boogie Down’ on WABC-AM (in NYC) while staying up all night in a pup tent on a Boy Scout trip. I can distinctly recall this one, as well as ‘Rock On’ by David Essex and ‘Until You Come Back To Me’ by Aretha Franklin (alongside ads for the local dragstrip, Raceway Park) winding their way deep into my impressionable, 12-year-old ears.

‘Boogie Down’, written by Leonard Caston, Anita Poree and Frank Wilson was Kendricks’ second consecutive R&B #1 hit, as well as a substantial Pop hit, making it all the way to #2.

‘Boogie Down’ is a fantastic example of the early days of disco, in which the records still had a decent amount of funk welded onto their frames. It is highly danceable (pushed along by a rolling piano line and percussion), and of course features Eddie’s mighty falsetto out in front.

While Kendricks continued to place records high on the R&B charts, this was his last significant Pop hit.

I hope you dig it (and get up and dance).

Greetings all.

I’ve been cold and tired of late, so I thought it wise to light a fire under this week’s figurative ass, and what better way to do that than with a tasty slice of breakbeat funk.

‘Shack Up’ by Banbarra is one of those records that I knew of – as a breakbeat source – long before I ever heard (or owned) it.

Not only was it sampled heavily, but it also had a second (third?) life of sorts when it was covered by the UK post punk band A Certain Ratio in 1980.

The thing that I found odd is that when I started to look for information on the band and the record, I found almost nothing.

The facts as they stand are, Banbarra was a Washington, DC based act featuring Moe Daniels and Joseph Anthony Carter. They recorded ‘Shack Up’ in 1975, and though it didn’t hit the Pop or R&B charts, it was popular on disco dancefloors in both the US and the UK (it shows up on Billboard’s disco charts for 1976).

Bearing both a very 1970s message of “we don’t need a piece of paper to prove our love”, and one of the tastiest, swingingest breakbeats ever, ‘Shack Up’ really ought to have been a hit.

Unfortunately, as good as ‘Shack Up’ is, Banbarra never made another record.

That, as they say, is a drag.

Greetings all

Welcome to the 2014 edition of the Funky16Corners Allnighter/Pledge Drive.

This is the ninth annual Pledge Drive, and the fifth Allnighter.

If you haven’t experienced the Allnighter/Pledge Drive, it can be explained as thus: once a year, the Funky16Corners Blog, your home for the best in funk, soul, jazz and rare groove vinyl for almost 10 years comes to you with hand outstretched, asking for donations to offset the operating expenses of the web site.

The Funky16Corners ‘operation’ (as it is) included the Funky16Corners and Iron Leg blogs, the mix archives for both (containing well over 200 mixes), and the Funky16Corners Radio Show/Podcast (another 200+ files available for download, or through subscription in iTunes).

The money raised during the pledge drive goes to pay for the server space and fees associated with hosting the whole megillah.

As has been attested to many times in the past, Funky16Corners has humble beginnings, starting out on the old (free) Blogger service, moving to WordPress, and then to self-hosted WordPress. The move to paid hosting was necessitated by increased bandwidth usage, as well as the need for a place to store all the mixes (and eventually the radio show episodes).

The Allnighter/Pledge Drive is a once-yearly occurrence, in which yours truly, and some of the finest selectors out there whip up new mixes for your delectation.

In past years, I have posted all of the mixes in a single post, and left it up for a week.

This year, the quality and quantity of the mixes spurred me on to try something a little different, i.e. posting a new mix each weekday for a period of just over two weeks. This way, each selector gets their moment in the spotlight, and the mixes get spaced out so that the listeners don’t suffer from mix-fatigue.

Each day, you’ll get a fantastic mix (there really are some amazing ones this year) from one of my favorite DJs, many of whom have participated in the Allnighter before, as well as a couple of great new contributors.

So, if you dig what we do here at Funky16Corners, click on the Paypal link and toss some cash into the barrel.

Contributors will receive a 2014 Allnighter badge, as well as some stickers from the archive (as long as they last).

Greetings all

As promised on Monday, I come to you midweek with yet another new mix.

This one was created at the behest of my man Studebaker Hawk, and first appeared on his Acapulco Nights radio show on WMUA-FM, 91.1 in Amherst, Massachusetts.

This is another one of those mixes that was percolating for a long time, coming to life the first time I heard Nina Simone’s ‘Seeline Woman’ and then moving ahead when I found the Paul Jones b-side you hear in the mix.

I should also mention – though some of the deeper heads will pick up on it when they see the set list – that this mix owes a big debt to one of the pioneers of DJ/dance culture, David Mancuso.

It was Mancuso’s deep and far ranging tastes that brought all kinds of unusual and unexpected records onto the dance floor of his legendary Loft parties, some of which are included in this mix.

It’s called ‘The Sound of the Drum’ because that’s the thread connecting all of these records, whether it’s the insistent beat of hand drumming, the snap of a master on the traps (dig that Quartette Tres Bien!), or just a wicked break.

So slap on your headphones and dig in.

Greetings all.

Welcome to the 2013 Funky16Corners Allnighter and Pledge Drive.

Those of you that fall by F16C on the reg will already be familiar with our yearly do, in which I ask some of the finest selectors I know to dip into their crates and put together mixes (from a wide variety of styles, but always soulful) for your listening pleasure.

This being the interwebs, with the selectors coming to you from points all over the map (NJ, New Zealand, NY, UK, Ohio, Minnesota), and all of you good people spread even further afield, we get together for this virtual “Allnighter” (in the tradition of the great soul clubs the world over) once a year.

There are two basic reasons for this, both equally important.

First and foremost, we try to raise some dough (via Paypal donation, see links below) to fund the server costs associated with keeping Funky16Corners (and Iron Leg) up and running. This includes the regular, thrice-weekly blog posts, as well as the Podcast, Soul Club, Guest Mix and Radio Show Archives (collectively holding well over 200 mixes of all kinds).

Second, is of course the fact that music – to paraphrase Willie the Shake – is the food of life, and so we assemble here to play on.

Blogging is for many – creators and readers alike – a transitory thing, but for the selectors here, and for many of the people that stop by here on a regular basis, music, especially soul, funk and jazz is life. These are no mere “collectors’. The mix-makers that you see here (and in all the previous years) have devoted a tremendous amount of time (not to mention,resources) to studying the sounds you will soon hear pouring out of your speakers.

Just the other day I saw someone bemoaning the overuse of the word “curating”, but I assure you that it applies to the work of every one of the people involved in this enterprise.

We all collect these sounds because we love them, but we have also all spent time sharing them, on blogs, and more importantly in live venues because we want to spread the word.

When I approach my fellow DJs to put together mixes for the Allnighter, I do so with complete confidence that they will select to impress, and impress they have.

What you here is roughly eight-and-a-half hours (in nine mixes) of the finest in funk, soul, latin, rocksteady, blues, disco, and Northern, put together by some of the best in the biz.

Funky16Corners is – and always has been – a not-for-profit enterprise. I have never taken ads here at the site and hopefully never will.

What I ask, is that if you dig what we do here, and you have the resources to do so, please throw a couple of bucks our way to keep the machine running for another year.

Everyone that donates five dollars or more will receive a Funky16Corners 2013 Allnighter Badge, F16C sticker, and one of our Keep Calm and Stay Funky stickers as well.

“Once again I’m honored to put together a guest mix for Larry at Funky 16 Corners. Today I’ve dug into my collection of 45s and pulled out a bunch of sides that I built around the intro from Sun-Ra. For the most part, these 45s represent a lot of the future of Funk, Soul, and who will be carrying on the torch of funky music in general in the years to come playing right along side a few older tracks that lend themselves nicely to this mix. Record labels like Colemine, who offer up The Jive Turkeys, Kept, who give us the Afro Beat of Hard Proof out of Austin, TX, The DT6 on Starla coming out of Scotland, Big Pimp Jones from Philly on Recordbreakin’, Our Records Label and Sir Ali Bengal out of Germany, and Quantic out of the UK represent a small amount of artists doing it like they did in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Some of these limited edition 7″s will be the sought after 45s in years to come. They’re recorded in the same manner as the originators, and each band lends it unique sound to the time line of music. I’ve also included some older sides such as Lonnie Liston Smith & The Cosmic Echoes, a Disco Soul cover of “Sunny” by Yambu, a Latin influenced Donnie Hathaway cover from Victor Green, some Psychedelic Library Hammond Funk from Studio G’s Beat Group, as well as some West Coast Lowrider Soul with East L.A. A Word from DJ RP

FUNKDEFY, located in Columbus Ohio, is the longest running Funk-N-Soul dance party of Central Ohio. Founded in 2004, the Crew is an ensemble group of crate diggers and beat battlers. What you see before you is the Funky16Corners 2012 Year In Review Mix, in which we take a look at the tracks that I consider to be the finest posted here since January.

You get all manner of soul and funk (mostly of the 45RPM variety), breakbeats and grooves of all kinds.

I gave this a listen the other night and came to the conclusion that this has been an especially good year.

My memories of recent digs, as well as the “to be blogged’ folder indicate that there’s a lot more where that came from.

Eddie Kendricks

Greetings all

Welcome to another week here at the Corners…

The tune I bring you today is something very groovy from one of the greats of 70s soul (as a solo, that is), Mr. Eddie Kendricks.

After helping to create the sound of the Temptations in the 60s, Kendricks departed for a solo career in the early 70s.

He was hugely successful, both artistically, and chart-wise.

1973’s ‘Boogie Down’ LP brought him his second #1 record with the title cut (#2 Pop) and continued his association with the late Frank Wilson. It was the songwriting team of Wilson, Leonard Caston and Anita Poree (with Wilson and Caston producing) that worked with Kendricks to create his influential and ahead-of-its-time disco funk sound, starting with 1972’s ‘People….Hold On’ LP.

It would be an understatement to say that Kendricks broke through in a big way. I was a 10 year old suburban white kid when he started his run of solo hits and they are still favorites of mine, drilled deeply into my brain.

Oddly though, I have no recollection of today’s selection, which was Top 5 R&B and Top 30 Pop in the Spring of 1974.

That’s too bad, because ‘Song of Sagittarius’ is a fantastic bit of dance floor magic.

My first instinct would be to classify it as ‘mid-tempo’ but there’s something in the throbbing bass drum, and the way the arrangement fluctuates between a smoother feel and slightly rougher funk that makes it feel more propulsive.

Plus, you get to listen to one of the greatest falsetto’s in the history of soul for almost four minutes, so there’s that too.

Greetings all

Welcome to that island in the middle of the week where we all gather to get our heads together, make it over the hump and start marching toward the weekend.

There’s not a lot to say about today’s selection that the music can’t say for itself.

Roy Ayers, master of the vibes (the instrument and the diffuse idea), who got his start playing hard bop/modal and moved onto to become one of the masters of funky sounds in the 70s, gets into the studio with some heavy friends and works it out on a song that had been a very big hit earlier that year (1973) for Stories.

Those of you that – like me – are old enough to remember that hit, well…remember it (from then).

The rest of you for whom it is instantly familiar surely picked up on it via Louie CK’s groovy show, wherein a version of it is used as the theme.

The Roy Ayers take on ‘Brother Louie’ is from his excellent ‘Virgo Red’ LP, and sees the master and his band taking the song, strapping a little funk to it (with lots of those good vibes, literal and figurative) and there you have it.

I dig it (and the whole album) a lot.

I come to you this day a happy/relieved man.

The election is finally over, and by and large the results were ones that I would consider not only positive but encouraging.

I realize that not everyone agrees with that assessment, but I have also come to see that having stated my peace, there’s not much I can do about that.

I’m certainly not going to worry about it either.

There are those on the fringes that start with the violent rhetoric, but my suspicion is that they have neither the courage nor the wherewithal to follow through on their angry, anonymous threats.

The vast majority of the population will either get back to work in furtherance of their agenda, or will likely ignore the political scene until whipped once again into a fever pitch for the mid-terms.

I’m going to savor this all a little bit, and then go back to staying informed, a little less on edge that I have been for the past few months.

The other good news is, that this week marks the eighth anniversary of the founding of the Funky16Corners blog.

It was back in early November of 2004 that I made the leap from the Funky16Corners web zine (est. 2000) and decided to continue whipping the sounds and words on you all in a slightly more economical form.

There have been redirections (Blogger to WordPress to self-hosted WordPress) and a few minor policy changes (the unfortunate removal of the zip files) but there have also been improvements as well (like the Funky16Corners Radio Show and its archive).

Either way, the flow of music and history continues in force, and my passion for both remains as strong as ever.

My thanks goes out to all of you that have participated in the conversation along the way (readers and fellow bloggers), some of whom have become friends.

With any luck, we’ll all be celebrating these anniversaries for years to come.

The slogan of the Funky16Corners blog – borrowed from the Northern Soul movement in the UK – is ‘Keep the Faith’. These are words to live by, not only as a dedicated soul fan, but as someone with an eye on improving the world, in any way possible.

I “keep the faith” here by preaching and spreading the gospel of good music, not only to help keep it alive, but to remind as many people as possible of the importance of its transformative nature.

2012 has been an especially trying time in our house on a very deep, very frightening level.

The other day my son asked me what was most important to me in the world and I answered that family was number one, but music was next.

All great music is “soul” music in the broad sense because that’s where it hits you. It gets deep inside your brain and has the power to move your emotions (in many directions) and often enough, move your physical body, whether simply nodding your head, tapping your feet or lifting you out of your seat to dance.

If there is a guiding force behind Funky16Corners – the blog, or when I’m lucky enough to get out and spin records – that is it.

And that it shall stay.

What you see before you is a new mix (previewed on Mixcloud a while back) composed of 45 solid minutes of dancers, most in the Northern Soul style.

There are lots of groovy 45s, a couple of unjustly ignored b-sides and an album track here and there.

A couple of these tracks have seen the light of day in this space individually, and a couple more may do so in the future.

Either way, they all ought to make you get up out of your seat and outon the floor (thanks Dobie!).

I hope the middle of the week finds you all well.

I had something else in the on deck circle, ready to go for today, but then I fell victim once again to my relentless need to read, and stumbled upon the news that Lillian Lopez, the singer of the group Odyssey had passed away at the age of 76.

Odyssey, best known for their 1977 disco classic ‘Native New Yorker’ (Top 10 R&B, Top 20 Pop) had a number of hits between then and 1982.

Lopez started a group with her sisters Louise and Carmen which became Odyssey in the mid 70s after Carmen left and was replaced by singer Tony Lopez. Lopez was with the group for their first LP (and hits) and was replaced by William McEachern by the time they recorded their second record.

The tune I bring you today is a great example of why you should always keep your ears (and options) open.

I have made mention many times in this space of how lucky I am to have had (and continue to have) a wide variety of musical “mentors”, i.e. fellow collectors and musicians who have always been generous with their time and their taste, turning me on to new sounds all the time.

One of these good people is my man DJ Birdman down in DC, a long time friend who has been a significant influence (and source) for me when it comes to dance music, specifically disco and post-1980 soul.

Birdman has always been very open about sharing his digging spots with me when I roll through DC, as well as always passing records on to me that he thinks I should hear.

Last year, when the fam and I were down in out nation’s capitol, we had ourselves a nice visit with Birdman and his family, after which he handed me a stack of vinyl, some of which I’d asked him to grab for me, and others that he was giving me to check out.

Not one to ever object to horizon-widening (especially when it comes to music) I expressed my gratitude, packed the wax in the ride and lead-footed it back to Jersey so that I might sample the goods.

One of the records in the stack is the disc you see before you today.

It was Birdman who had first hipped me to Lamont Dozier’s OG of ‘Going Back to My Roots’ and it was he that introduced me to the most excellent cover by Odyssey.

I think it’s safe to say that left to my own devices, I may very well have passed this record by.

While I knew of ‘Native New Yorker’ – and you know I dig disco – it’s not the kind of disc I’d pick up unless I was looking to stash it with my DJ stuff,  amongst my “wedding records”.

I was completely ignorant of the wider reach of Odyssey’s catalog and was pleasantly surprised when I had a chance to drop the needle on today’s selection.

Originally recorded by songwriting legend Dozier in 1977, ‘Going Back To My Roots’ was given a somewhat smoother interpretation by Odyssey. Though Dozier’s (fairly rare and sought after) OG is a 9-minute-plus epic, it failed to make it onto the charts whereas Odyssey scored in both the US and the UK.

The Odyssey version of the song is – at least in my opinion – more consistently danceable than the original, even in its extended ‘Roots Suite’ version.

Lillian Lopez continued to tour with a version of Odyssey until 2000, when she retired from the stage.
