Greetings all

Summer is on the wane, and the fam and I are trying to shoehorn in some R&R before school starts again.

As a result, i’ve gone back into the archives and pulled out a couple of my favorite mixes that I’ve done for other blogs or radio shows in the past, tohold you over until I return to my keyboard and start tapping away once again.

I’m going to get the week started with a two-part set I did for the Delirious Insomniac show back in 2010. The mixes were actually done for the end segment of the show, known as Delirious Sunrise.

I was tasked to put something together for the dark, still hours before dawn, so I dipped into the crates and grabbed a couple of handfuls of ‘head music’.

I use that old term in the old-school ‘feed your head’ sense, which is what I generally do with records like this, just before I close my eyes and allow Hypnos to take me by the hand and lead me to the world of dreams.

There’s just under two full hours of sounds here, running the gamut from soul, to late night funk, to jazz, all good for your ears and (of course) your head.

So dig it, and I’ll see you again on Wednesday with some more grooves.

Welcome to the 2014 edition of the Funky16Corners Allnighter/Pledge Drive.

This is the ninth annual Pledge Drive, and the fifth Allnighter.

If you haven’t experienced the Allnighter/Pledge Drive, it can be explained as thus: once a year, the Funky16Corners Blog, your home for the best in funk, soul, jazz and rare groove vinyl for almost 10 years comes to you with hand outstretched, asking for donations to offset the operating expenses of the web site.

The Funky16Corners ‘operation’ (as it is) included the Funky16Corners and Iron Leg blogs, the mix archives for both (containing well over 200 mixes), and the Funky16Corners Radio Show/Podcast (another 200+ files available for download, or through subscription in iTunes).

The money raised during the pledge drive goes to pay for the server space and fees associated with hosting the whole megillah.

As has been attested to many times in the past, Funky16Corners has humble beginnings, starting out on the old (free) Blogger service, moving to WordPress, and then to self-hosted WordPress. The move to paid hosting was necessitated by increased bandwidth usage, as well as the need for a place to store all the mixes (and eventually the radio show episodes).

The Allnighter/Pledge Drive is a once-yearly occurrence, in which yours truly, and some of the finest selectors out there whip up new mixes for your delectation.

In past years, I have posted all of the mixes in a single post, and left it up for a week.

This year, the quality and quantity of the mixes spurred me on to try something a little different, i.e. posting a new mix each weekday for a period of just over two weeks. This way, each selector gets their moment in the spotlight, and the mixes get spaced out so that the listeners don’t suffer from mix-fatigue.

Each day, you’ll get a fantastic mix (there really are some amazing ones this year) from one of my favorite DJs, many of whom have participated in the Allnighter before, as well as a couple of great new contributors.

A Note From Kris Holmes: Dedicating this mix to the late Bob Abrahamian:

I woke up on Saturday morning & grasped for my phone, casually checking emails, facebook etc before dragging myself out of bed to make a coffee. Only to see posts from mutual friends saying that our friend Bob had passed away. It stopped me in my tracks & tears began to fall from my eyes.

I couldn’t believe it was true, some sort of stupid joke, but messages to friends confirmed it. I’m typing this only a few hours after hearing the news. I first got acquainted with Bob in the late 2000s and since then we have spent a lot of time talking/dealing/researching 45s & just chatting about stupid stuff (always with the stupid stuff). Living way down here in Auckland, well, it’s kinda miles away from anywhere and let’s face it, makes my hobby of researching vintage Soul 45s a little bit tricky.

I try to get to the US as much as possible, but I also tend to rely on record friends I trust when getting them to help with research. Bob was one of those friends I always turned to & he always came through. Whether he was trying to call some artist I thought I had a lead on, or sending me additions for my Greenville & Beyond website just because he’d found one I didn’t have or even just sending me a New Orleans 45 he’d bought but knew that I’d appreciate more than him & since he didn’t get that sound so much he thought I should have it. Bob was one of our scene’s good guys.

No doubt about it.

We would tease each other mercilessly about stuff, I would tell him to get the hell off Ebay & go get some sunlight. He would threaten to fly to Australia (not the same place as New Zealand for all you geographically challenged Americans) and kick my ass for playing the wrong (uptempo/funk) sides of my 45s. When he knew I was going through tough times with relationships his motto to me was always “just remember Kris, tell yourself, she’s a skeezer & move on, we’ll laugh about this next time you’re in Chicago”.

I have so many great memories of fun exchanges with the guy, it’s ridiculous, like the time I trolled him under a fake name on Soul Source & he got all riled up & then figured out it was me (there followed another “ok, you got me good this time, but I’m still gonna fly to Australia & kick your ass”).

Although it was plain to see that Bob had a ferocious appetite for almost every group soul 45, we also shared a love of early 70s raw blues 45s & would swap info on those too. The guy just knew so much, he was like an encyclopedia, not only of groups & labels & the inter-relatedness of such things but also he seemed to have a finger of the sounds other would dig. The care-packages of 45s he would send me from time to time were always guaranteed to contain a few killers (and of course they were always packaged & cleaned superbly). He was like the rain man of record packing & 45 cleaning.

I buy a lot of 45s, but Bob, he bought A LOT of 45s. He is (was, fuck) one of the few people who could call me a lightweight & back that up. Didn’t stop me calling him a lightweight back, but he took it on the chin, hehehe.

I remember some of the conversations we had & it was like 4am Chicago time & I’d say “dude what are you doing still up?” & he’d say “checking ebay, buying 45s”. A great anecdote was that in his apartment building, he got so many 45s in the mail from the mailman that whenever someone else in the neighborhood ordered 45s the mailman delivered them to Bob also. I guess the mailman just didn’t even look at the address, just saw like-packages & dropped them all for Bob!

He had a passion for food, movies & arcade games too but Group Soul 45s were what’s what. I know his Sitting in the Park radio show hipped me to so much stuff, the interviews & time he spent tracking down forgotten soul singers, jaw-dropping.

Today, I woke up to the news that my friend Bob is gone, I miss him, I wish I had said more in our last conversation (instead of just some throwaway chat about an obscure Cadet 45). When I recorded this Sweet Soul Primer Mix last month, I told him he’d be proud of me for finally playing the right side of the 45s for once (he said “finally”, but that he’d still kick my ass).

Rest in Peace my friend. I am gutted you won’t be there waiting for me in Chicago & I’m also gutted you will never get to fly to Australia & try to find me in Auckland there.

NOTE: This – the first of two mixes I put together for this year’s Allnighter is a tribute to the sounds that Creed Taylor produced (usually engineered by Rudy Van Gelder) for A&M, CTI and Kudu in the late 60s and 70s. 

I’m a huge fan of the entire CTI aesthetic, from the amazing sounds (listen to the drums, brass and strings)  to the classic album covers. It’s no mystery why so much of the CTI catalog has been sampled over the years, and many of those sample sources are in this mix.

This one was a real labor of love, and I’ve given it a grip of listens since I recorded it.

Greetings all

I hope you all dug my account of this week’s amazing Friars Club experience with the legendary David Porter.

What I am privileged to bring you today is the complete set spun that night by the mighty Connie T Empress.

For the few of you that won’t know her name, Connie T Empress was one of the founders of the legendary Empire State Soul Club. Starting in 1987 and lasting well into the 90s, Connie, along with W. Lee and Jeff the Chef spun the finest in rare soul for audiences all over New York City.

Though I missed out on the ESSC experience, I was lucky enough to spin alongside Connie when she joined the ranks of the Asbury Park 45 Sessions back in 2007, spinning with our crew for a few years.

She is that rarest of soul DJ, in that she’s no mere trainspotter/collector, but rather a dyed in the wool fan who feels the music as much as the dancers on the floor (she’s usually moving and grooving behind the decks at the same time).

Her enthusiasm is obvious and contagious, and I always relish the opportunity to share the turntables with her. It never fails that I come away from one of her sets with a number of sides added to my want list, and this evening was no exception.

What you get here is a little over an hour of solid senders, engineered for the dance floor, all groovy.

A brief technical note; as I mentioned with my set, there were some problems with the mixer, with some bleed through from channel to channel, but certainly not enough to keep such a tasty set under wraps. Fortunately, Connie did not experience the drop-out I did during my set, so you get this mix in stereo!

A while back my man DJ Trick over in St. Petersburg, RU asked if I would be amenable to doing an interview and whipping up a mix that they could post in their ‘Grooves’ project*.

As someone who is always down with the cause of spreading the sounds of soul and funk all over the globe, I agreed and set to work.

As you will hear as soon as you pull the trigger on this one, I was in a particularly raucous mood that day, packing just about 40 minutes worth of sonic nitroglycerin into mix form and setting the fuse.

What you get here, is some of my favorite, high-octane soul shouters, organ burners, hardcore R&B and dance party starters, stitched together so that the assembled multitudes might cut themselves a slice of rug (and maybe spill a little beer, too).

If you haven’t sussed it out over the long haul, this is a pretty good approximation of the kind of set I’d throw down were I spinning in a live setting.

That said, this is perfect weekend stuff, so get your download on, and have yourself a party, Artie.

Also, I don’t usually do a whole ot of plugs here, but I got word that the BBC is doing an hour-long radio documentary on one of my all-time faves, the mighty Wilson Pickett, featuring interviews with folks like Bobby Womack, Steve Cropper, Bobby Eli, Willie Schofield, Eddie Floyd, Sir Mack Rice, Rick Hall, and Spooner Oldham and the whole thing is narrated by none other than Roger Daltrey.

It will be broadcast on BBC2 (for you good folks in the UK) on Monday March 12th at 10pm and will also be available on their listen again feature on their website for the following 7 days.

Now, back to the treats.

If you are a regular attendee of the festivities here at the Funky16Corners you will already be familiar with the mixing/digging prowess of my man Tarik Thornton.

Tarik has contributed to both of the previous Funky16Corners Soul Club Allnighters, as well as dropping one of his live sets from the Hip Drop.

Tarik is a very solid cat and it should go without saying (but I’ll say it anyway) that I hold his musical taste in high esteem.

The mix he brings us today is his latest excursion, this in a down-to-mid-tempo style, entitled ‘The Wiz’.

I’m always down to listen to any of Tarik’s mixes, but this one is extra groovy.

Despite my obvious love for hard charging bangers (funk and/or soul) I have a highly developed taste for the somewhat more laid back side of funk (see ‘Easy Mover’ just added to the Guest Mix Archive), in the “it doesn’t have to crack you over the head to bring the funk” school of thought.

That is the vibe of ‘The Wiz’ with some stuff straight out of the old school, some of slightly later – how the kids say “modern soul’ bag – and some very tasty breaks as well.

He doesn’t belabor the point either, bringing the whole thing in at around a tight 40 minutes.

Give this one a spin with the lights down low.

I know you’ll dig it.

Greetings all.

I know that after my post on Monday, it seems incongruous that I should be returning to this very space on Friday.
However, there are explanations aplenty.

I should start by giving a brief recap of the situation, that being, that after a week of feeling fatigued, my beloved wife has landed in the hospital with a case of leukemia.

In a short two weeks our world has been turned upside down, with everything we considered secure and normal shaken to its roots.

She’s weathering this disturbing (understatement alert) experience with a good deal of grace and courage, and I can only hope that I can try to match that from my side of things.

This is proving to be a painful lesson in the value of rolling with the punches, or at least attempting to do so, since no one likes to go through life catching punches, literal or figurative.

That said, we’re just trying to hang on, adjusting to the new (abnormal) ‘normal’, and doing what we can to stitch the whole mess back together as best we can.

Earlier this week, we were discussing life in general and Jen said that she’d had an opportunity to read Monday’s post (wireless internet and hand-held devices facilitating such things in the hospital setting) and she expressed her wish that I continue writing during this time.

I won’t argue with her, but I will state that anything I get posted here or over at Iron Leg will have to be wedged into the schedule as time (and sanity) allows.

I certainly have tons of stuff recorded and ready to go, so it’s only a matter of the writing and the interwebbing.

There is definitely something to be said for the restorative nature of creative pursuits, but if the old engine isn’t firing on all cylinders (said engine being what’s left of my brain) I can’t even take advantage of that, so bear with me.

I have to say that I am especially thankful for all the messages of support.

This Friday marks the seventh anniversary of the Funky16Corners blog.

It was on November 4th of 2004 that I transitioned from the old web zine format into something different, which in the beginning didn’t bear much resemblance to what you see today, unless of course you were to take Funky16Corners and Iron leg and stitch them together.

It wasn’t very long until things were purely soulful, and here we all are, seven years later, still riding the rails of the interwebs, engaged in a shared love of music.

I have always found the most satisfying part of this thing to be when one of you good people steps forward to add some info to the conversation, or merely to say thanks.

I guess that the blog is my way of expressing my thanks to all of you, at least as a reflection of how much I have always loved when someone turned me on to new sounds.

The really groovy thing is, that where I used to have those same conversations with my crate digging buddies in person, through the Funky16Corners blog I get to have the same kinds of exchanges with people from all over the world.

In this day and age where McLuhan’s Global Village seems like a dark place, it’s heartening to discover that some of us can find our own rays of light in the murk.

What you see before you is a brand new mix, conceived of and completed long before our current problems.

My man Pete Cadden of the Amen Brother crew over in Ireland saw that the anniversary of the blog was approaching and asked if I might be interested in putting together a guest mix for their site to mark the occasion.

Naturally, I said yes, and got to work on the mix you see before you (details over at MNtothat), just about an hour of tasty mid-tempo funk seasoned liberally with breaks.

There are a couple of familiar tunes, some very groovy b-sides and perhaps a few things you’ve never heard of before.

Greetings all, and welcome to the 2011, Funky16Corners Soul Club/Grogan Casino Allnighter..

This is – as it has been since 2006 – time for yours truly to once again open up the yearly Funky16Corners Pledge Drive, in which we ask that if you dig what goes on hereabouts, with the blog(s), radio show, mixes etc, that you click on the donation link and drop a little something in the basket.

Your donations help to pay for the server space where the blog, all of the graphics and well over 100 mixes (a number that is expanding all the time) reside, as well as upkeep on the equipment used to run the whole non-profit (is there a better phrase to describe an operation that runs at a perpetual loss?) shebang.

As always, I’m aware that times are tough, and getting tougher all the time, so if you can’t swing it, that’s cool too. However, every little bit helps, so even a couple of bucks will help things along.

The readers of Funky16Corners have always been very cool over the seven year history of the blog (as well as the years preceding that at the web zine), generous with their knowledge and vocal in their appreciation and once again I’d like to thank you all.

Funky16Corners has always been an ad-free space (and that includes needless plugs for crap that none of you (or me) is going to listen to) and will always remain that way.

Greetings all.

I hope the new week finds you well.

Things are finally starting to settle down here in the Funky16Corners Blogcasting Nerve Center and Record Vault after the busiest month of DJ activity I’ve seen in a long, long time.

We already covered my appearance at the Subway Soul Club, and today’s post will tell the tale of my journey to the great state of Massachusetts for a pair of very groovy nights.

I’d like to get started though by telling you how I spent my weekend, which dovetails nicely with everything else and kind of puts a cap on things.

As has been related in this space before, for a couple of vary important reasons (those being our sons) our family is involved with POAC (Parents of Autistic Children, you can follow the link at the bottom of this or any other recent post).
POAC organized a dodgeball tournament, and they asked me to come out and spin some records during the festivities, which is how I spent my Saturday (with Miles acting as my roadie).

I packed up the decks and mixer in my new road case (I think I’m going to stop referring to it as a coffin, which is slightly morbid nomenclature and has to be explained every single time I use it in conversation), packed up a case of funk and disco 45s, filled the record bag with albums and 12”s, and headed over to the local rec center.

Despite years of DJing, this is the first time I took the old Funky16Corners Sound System on the road, and it was a resounding success (even if I forgot to bring a surge protector and an extension cord, but the audio gods look out for the foolish and forgetful, and I was covered).

It was a gas (including a bunch of high school kids singing along with ‘Pass the Hatchet’ which I’m 100% certain they’d never heard before), and despite a couple of close calls, wherein the dodge balls inadvertently came in contact with the sound system (but never the turntables, thankfully), things went swimmingly.

The trip to Massachusetts was similarly excellent.

A few months back my man DJ Andujar got in touch as asked if I might be interested in coming up his way to do his (and Studebaker Hawk’s) night in Greenfield, MA (Sweet Exorcist), followed by a Saturday in Northampton, MA with Snack Attack and DJ Cashman (Wooly Bully).

I checked the calendar and discovered that the dates in question intersected with the Funky16Corners family spring break, so arrangements were made to wrap the two nights into our vacation.

We’d been up to Northampton last year (for vinyl and yarn digging) and found the area to our liking, so the wife and I were both psyched about a return trip.

The Monday before the gigs I phoned in to DJ Andujar’s Radio Clandestino Show on WMUA-FM, and did an interview, which he was kind enough to record, and which I’ll post here for your listening pleasure.

Sweet Exorcist is held at a very groovy joint called the People’s Pint in Greenfield, MA, and I have to tell you, if you’re in the area, and crave some excellent food and drink, this is the place for you. I’m a ginger beer fanatic, and the People’s Pint makes their own, as well as house made cola, root beer, and a few varieties of regular beer (I tried the oatmeal stout and was very pleased).

The records started spinning around 10PM, and the night was a gas. Both DJ Andujar and Studebaker Hawk brought the heat (as you’ll hear when you pull down the ones and zeros) and I did my level best not to disappoint.

The peeps were dancing, the vinyl was spinning and a good time was had by all. Many thanks to the DJs (and the staff at the People’s Pint) for a great night.

The following night I was on my own (my wife was with the little Corners) and I packed up the record box and headed over to Northampton for Wooly Bully at the Basement.

Run by Snack Attack and DJ Cashman, Wooly Bully runs a little more in the 60s soul direction, and I’d packed a grip of Northern and 60s dance floor soul for the occasion. The Basement is a small room in the back of a building, but by the time the music got started it was packed to the rafters with party people who never stopped dancing until the lights came on and the door guy ushered them out into the night at closing time.

The place was a madhouse, and much good music was spun and danced to.

Unfortunately – and this was the only sour note of the whole trip – my recordings from the Basement were unusable. The levels were set too high and the recordings were distorted. There were other technical issues (the PA system overheated at one point) but they were all surmountable.  Hopefully, if I make a return visit during the summer, I can remedy the situation and bring back a couple of sets by Snack Attack and DJ Cashman, who both rocked the house.

Today I’ll be trying something new, which is basically posting sets by everyone who spun at Sweet Exorcist. I won’t be posting my first set, since there was a problem with a ground wire and there’s an annoying buzz that cuts into the music at a number of points.

It’s interesting to hear the different sensibilities of three DJs, all funky, but coming at the sound from different angles.
My assessment of a quality night is one where I walk away from the evening with new records added to my want list, and Sweet Exorcist definitely fit the bill.

Justin ‘Rambo’ Salinas and Joe Cristando

Greetings all.

I hope you’re all well.

I have returned from DC laden with vinyl and tired as a mofo.

I’m this close to a full restoration of energy and enthusiasm, but I’m gonna rest a little bit more while you all get down.

Of what do I speak?

Well, I have a very special treat for you all to get your week started.
A little while back my man Tarik Thornton let me know that he was going to be spinning a set in New Orleans at the Ponderosa Stomp pre-party known as the Hip Drop. Naturally I asked him if he’d be recording it, so that I might place it up here on the blog for the delectation of the reader/listener-ship.

Naturally he gave me the okeydoke, in addition to getting Mr. Justin ‘Rambo’ Salinas (of the famed Hot Pants party in Minneapolis) – who was also spinning at the party – to contribute his set as well.

What does this mean to you?

Well, you get to wrap your ears around two superb sets of funk and soul by two of the country’s finest selectors, with Tarik bringing a regionally diverse set of heat, and Justin dropping a very nice set of Chicano soul and funk bouncing from Texas to East LA and back again (that Intruders cover by the Eptones is amazing!).

Very groovy indeed!

And now, a few words from Tarik about the experience.

“Hip Drop is the opening party for the Ponderosa Stomp. This 45 all-nighter hosts 10 DJs from all around the world. This year Justin Salinas along with myself were invited to participate in the festivities. Justin, who is a member of the Hot Pants Crew of Minneapolis, flew into New Orleans with only backpack and a 45 case ready for action. As for myself,a New Orleans native, this was a homecoming of sorts. I haven’t lived in the city for almost 10yrs so this weekend was very welcoming and adownright funky experience. As you can tell from both of our sets the night was hot and heavy as all the invited DJs brought in their best arsenal of 45’s. Throughout the madness of the weekend, I managed to dig up an old Mini Disc player to record both of our sets live! The end result is a something only fit for place called The Funky 16 Corners. Enjoy!”
